Book Synthesis of Articulated All Para Polymers

Download or read book Synthesis of Articulated All Para Polymers written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Articulated all-para-polymers with 2,6-benzobisoxazole, 2,6- benzobisthiazole, and 2,6-benzobisimidazole units in the backbone were synthesized by copolycondensation in polyphosphoric acid of 4,6-diamino-1,3- benzenediol dihydrochloride, 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzenedithiol dihydrochloride, and 1,2,4,5-tetraaminobenzene tetrahydrochloride, respectively, with terephthalic acid and reactive diphenoxybenzene monomers. Inherent viscosities of up to 12.57 dL/g (CH3SO3H, 25 C, 0.2g/d1) were achieved. The average length of the rod-like all-para segments between the relatively flexible diphenoxybenzene units was controlled by the stoichiometry of the copolycondensation reactions. Films which exhibited optical birefringence under crossed polars could be cast from methanesulfonic acid solutions of the polymers. Modulus and tensile strength values as high as 4696 mPa and 93mPa, respectively, were recorded. Thermooxidative stability of the articulated polymers was evaluated by isothermal aging in air at 316 C. Stability for the articulated polybenzobisoxazoles was found to decrease with increased content of the diphenoxybenzene structure. The articulated polybenzobisoxazole structure was shown to be less stable than the anlogous polybenzobisthiazole structure but more stable than the articulated polybenzobisimidazole structure.

Edited by world leading experts in the field of conjugated polymer synthesis, the book serves as a convenient guide for advanced undergraduate level and above.

Book Processable Precursors to High Performance Liquid Crystalline Polymers

Download or read book Processable Precursors to High Performance Liquid Crystalline Polymers written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processable precursor polymers to aramids, poly(imino1,4- phenyleneiminocarbonyl-1,4 phenylenecarbonyl) and poly(imino-1,3- phenyleneiminocarbonyl-1,4-phenylenecarbonyl), were prepared and studied. The precursor polymers were made from the reaction of 2,5-dichlorobicyclo2.2. 2octane-1,4dicarbonyl chloride or 2,5diacetoxybicyclo2.2.2octane-1,4- dicarboxylic acid. The polymeric precursors were subsequently converted in approximately 98% - 100% yields, via dehdrohalogenation and retro Diels-Alder reactions to the corresponding aramids by refluxing in 1M solution of potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide, or by bulk pyrolysis using aromatization catalysts, such as, ZnCl 2 and dichlorobenzene sulfonic acid. Only the p- phenylene precursor polymer exhibited liquid crystal characteristics in solution. Thermal properties were examined and tensile properties will be determined In a future study.

Book SYNTHESIS OF CONJUGATED POLYMERS VIA RANDOM COPOLYMERIZATION TO INVESTIGATE THERMAL PROPERTIES

Download or read book SYNTHESIS OF CONJUGATED POLYMERS VIA RANDOM COPOLYMERIZATION TO INVESTIGATE THERMAL PROPERTIES written by Michael Gill and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The utility of conjugated polymers stems from their wide uses in organic photovoltaics, organic field-effect transistors, and organic light-emitting diodes. One of the advantages of conjugated polymers over traditional silicon-based electronics is their chemical tunability. Conjugated polymers can be customized to have desirable properties based on their intended application. These polymers have been studied to understand how changes to their structure affect electronic properties, including analysis of their glass transition and melting transition; however, these models have not been extensively studied. In this study, two polymers, Poly-((2,5- dihexylphenylene)-1,4-diyl-alt-[4,7-bis(thiophen-5-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole]-2,2"-diyl) (PPTBT) and Poly-((9,9-bis(2-octyl)-fluorene-2,7-diyl)-alt-(4,7-di(thiophene-2-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)-5,5-diyl) (PFTBT) were synthesized with varying concentrations of 4,7-bis(5-bromo-4-hexylthiophen-2-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (T6BT). This was done to analyze how the random addition of T6BT affects the physical macroscopic properties of the polymers including crystallinity and the phase transition temperatures. Addition of T6BT was expected to improve the solubility of the polymer during processing with minimal impact on thermal properties. Thermal analysis was conducted using Differential Scanning Calorimetry. Poly-((2,5-dihexylphenylene)-1,4-diyl-alt-[4,7-bis(3-hexylthiophen-5-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole]-2,2-diyl) or PPT6BT demonstrated a liquid crystallinity with a nematic to isotropic transition at 146C while no other polymers demonstrated substantial crystallinity or liquid crystalline properties.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Soluble Poly p phenylene Derivatives Made Via Ni 0 catalyzed Coupling of Aromatic Dichlorides

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Soluble Poly p phenylene Derivatives Made Via Ni 0 catalyzed Coupling of Aromatic Dichlorides written by Anthony Joseph Pasquale and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The synthesis and characterization of new aromatic dichloride monomers containing benzoyl and phenylsulfonyl pendant groups and the corresponding polymers made via Ni(O)-catalyzed coupling polymerization are described. This work is an outgrowth of the previously described synthesis of poly(benzoyl-1,4-phenylene) from the Ni(O)-catalyzed coupling polymerization of 2,5-dichlorobenzophenone. The new monomers containing benzoyl pendant groups were synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts reaction of 2,5-dichlorobenzoyl chloride and substituted benzenes to give structures that were substituted at the para position on the pendant benzene ring. The substituents include fluorine, methyl, ethyl, and isopropyl.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Poly diethyl 5 6 bis methylene decanedioate Via Free radical Polymerization

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Poly diethyl 5 6 bis methylene decanedioate Via Free radical Polymerization written by Matt David Beery and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research describes the synthesis of an ester functionalized 2,3-disubstituted diene, 2,3-bis(4-ethoxy-4-oxobutyl)-1,3-butadiene, to produce and modify functional polymers. The polymer was synthesized via free-radical bulk and solution polymerizations. The polarity of the material, high thermal and thermooxidative stability and the ability to modify the functionality are attractive and potentially useful features. Potential applications include new polymer blends, dispersants, and membranes. Modification of polystyrene-butadiene rubber is also possible. The addition of this polymer into a variety of these materials could alter the adhesion, solubility and processing leading to tailor-made materials.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the interest of the synthesis of polymers that have the potential to possess inherent light-emitting properties (LEDs) the synthesis of a novel 1,4-bis(chloromethyl)-benzene monomer, 5-benzyloxy-1,4-dichloromethyl-2,3-diphenyl benzene 78 was carried out. Monomer 78 was polymerized via the Gilch polymerization method to yield, poly(5-benzyloxy-2,3-diphenyl phenylene vinylene) 80. Polymer 80 was characterized by TGA (5% weight loss at 267°, GPC (weight average molecular weight of 7136 Da, number average molecular weight of 6603 Da) , UV-Vis and fluorescence studies (absorbance maximum at 406 nm, emission maximum at 510 nm). The Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons variant of the Wittig was applied in the synthesis of poly(2,3-diphenyl-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (DP-PPV) 3 from 2,3-diphenylterephthalaldehyde 6 and 1,4-bis(diethoxyphosphorylmethyl)-2,3-diphenyl benzene 79, which was synthesized via the Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction. Four trials were carried out to determine an optimal method for the order of addition of the monomers and base. Of these, trial 4, which yielded polymer 3d, was found to the most optimal. Polymer 3d was characterized by TGA (5% weight loss of 319°), UV-Vis and fluorescence studies (absorbance maximum at 430 nm, emission maximum at 496 nm when excited at 416 or 424 nm).
