Book The Development of Iron Chelators for Clinical Use

Download or read book The Development of Iron Chelators for Clinical Use written by Raymond J. Bergeron and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-12-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing an integration of basic and clinical sciences, this book focuses on new concepts in the design, synthesis, and testing of iron chelators for clinical application. It provides an overview of the pathophysiology of iron metabolism as it relates to the origins of iron-mediated tissue damage, and it clearly outlines successes and shortcomings of current iron chelation therapy in preventing such damage. The book also describes a number of other exciting potential therapeutic applications of iron chelators, such as in the treatment of malaria. Other topics covered include iron coordination chemistry, recent advances in synthetic methods for accessing iron chelators, siderophore models, subcellular iron storage targets, and the possible application of biotechnology in the production of therapeutically useful iron chelators. The book also describes new animal models for evaluating chelators.

Book Design Synthesis and Characterization of New Ligands and Activators for the Oligomerization of Ethylene by Iron Complexes

Download or read book Design Synthesis and Characterization of New Ligands and Activators for the Oligomerization of Ethylene by Iron Complexes written by Adrien Boudier and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the development of new catalytic systems based upon iron complexes and their reactivity toward ethylene. First, we focused our interest on the synthesis of iron(III) precursors chelated by monoanionic ligand. Those complexes were obtained either by reaction of the monoanionic ligand with FeCl3 or through oxidation of the iron(II) complex. The second reaction led to binuclear complexes. Then, another aim of the thesis was to design new well-defined cocatalysts for the activation of iron complexes. The study of the reaction between an alcohol and the trimethylaluminum allowed us to reach this aim. Aluminum complexes adopted either a binuclear framework or a trinuclear one, depending on the nature of alcohol reagent. Besides this work, new iron(II) and nickel(II) complexes chelated by imino-imidazole ligands bearing a pendant donor function L were synthesized. All complexes have been evaluated for the oligomerization of ethylene in the presence of EtAlCl2 or MAO as cocatalyst. Only nickel complexes were active toward ethylene transformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decades, the field of molecular imaging has been rapidly growing involving multiple disciplines such as medicine, biology, chemistry, pharmacology and biomedical engineering. Any molecular imaging procedure requires an imaging probe that is an agent used to visualize, characterize and quantify biological processes in living systems. Such a probe typically consists of an agent that usually produces signal for imaging purpose, a targeting moiety, and a linker connecting the targeting moiety and the signaling agent. Many challenging problems of molecular imaging can be addressed by exploiting the great possibilities offered by modern synthetic organic and coordination chemistry and the powerful procedures provided by conjugation chemistry. Thus, chemistry plays a decisive role in the development of this cutting-edge methodology. Currently, the diagnostic imaging modalities include Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Ultrasound (US), Nuclear Imaging (PET, SPECT), Optical Imaging (OI) and Photoacoustic Imaging (PAI). Each of these imaging modalities has its own advantages and disadvantages, and therefore, a multimodal approach combining two techniques is often adopted to generate complementary anatomical and functional information of the disease. The basis for designing imaging probes for a given application is dictated by the chosen imaging modality, which in turn is dependent upon the concentration and localization profile (vascular, extracellular matrix, cell membrane, intracellular, near or at the cell nucleus) of the target molecule. The development of high-affinity ligands and their conjugation to the targeting vector is also one of the key steps for pursuing efficient molecular imaging probes. Other excellent reviews, text and monographs describe the principles of biomedical imaging, focusing on molecular biology or on the physics behind the techniques. This Research Topic aims to show how chemistry can offer molecular imaging the opportunity to express all its potential.

Book Free Radicals in Biology and Environment

Download or read book Free Radicals in Biology and Environment written by F. Minisci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the quantitative aspects of free radical chemistry and the involvement of radicals in such areas as biology, medicine, the environment, etc., has developed spectacularly over recent years, yet the various topics are commonly discussed separately, in specific meetings and specialised publications. Free Radicals in Biology and Environment draws together two important areas of free radical chemistry, using as a bridge the fundamental physical chemistry of free radicals (spectroscopic detection of free radicals, evaluation of absolute rate constants, elucidation of mechanisms of free radical reactions and catalysis, photochemical and radiation processes, etc.). The most relevant topics covered are the EPR detection of radicals in biochemical systems and in pollutant formation and degradation, oxidation processes in biology and in the troposphere, radiation and induced damage, and atmospheric pollutants arising from incomplete combustion. Also covered are the chemistry and biochemistry of nitric oxide and peroxynitrite, the chemistry and biochemistry of DNA radicals, the role of radicals in myeloperoxidase, lignineperoxidase, radicals and cardiovascular injury, radiation and the fragmentation of cells and tissues.
