To the great dissertation of Mendoza, and to the Kirchengeschichte con Spam'an of Dr. Pius Gams, I have recurred throughout the Essay 3 and the com mentaries of Aabespine and the Cardinal Saenz d'agm'rre have supplied a large amount of material for illustration and criticism. These authorities. Together with Dr. Hefcle's Conciliengeschichte, serve rather to introduce than to complete the tale of my debts: other obligations must be severally acknow ledged as they occur. But in dealing with a Synod in which Hosius is such a prominent figure, it is impossible to leave without mention one who first impressed on many of us the work and the character of the great Spanish Bishop. Above all other ecclesiastical historians of our day, the late Dean of Westminster possessed the faculty described by Voltaire as Cet heureux don de plaire, and ex pressed by Mr. Lowell in still happier phrase. If in one sense he taught us little; in another, we have learned much: his was a power that lay beneath the printed page, and deeper than dry fact or abstruse theory. Part of that region in southern Spain named by its Islamic rulers "Al–Andalus," medieval Granada witnessed a flourishing of poetry in several languages, the first modern translations of Greek philosophy, the birth of algebra, and the construction of architectural masterpieces such as the Alhambra and the Generalife. Yet with Ferdinand and Isabella's sack of Granada in 1492, regarded as the culmination of the Reconquista, which sought to reclaim Spain for the Vatican, a Catholic mythology of Spain began to erode Granada's centuries–old reputation as an artistically vital haven for multiple ethnic and religious groups. Linking the disastrous afterlife of the Reconquista to the Catholic nationalism of the Franco regime—whose execution of Granadan poet Federico Garcia Lorca symbolizes the suppression of Andalusia's cultural heritage—Nightingale demonstrates the extent to which this Catholic triumphalism also obscured the source of much cultural wealth bequeathed by Al–Andalus to Christian Europe. Nightingale's own account of the region's medieval zenith recovers the intellectual pageantry and aesthetic splendor of this astounding period in Western history and the marvelous city that was its cultural center.

More than fifty years since the restoration of the permanent diaconate by the Second Vatican Council, the office of deacon is still in need of greater specificity about its purpose and place within the mission and organizational structure of the Church. While the Church is more than a social reality, the Church nonetheless has a social reality. Our understanding of the diaconate therefore benefits from a theological discussion of the divine element of the Church and a sociological examination of the human element. Understanding the Diaconate adds the resources of sociology and anthropology to the theological sources of scripture, liturgy, patristic era texts, theologians, and magisterial teachings to conclude that the deacon can be understood as “social intermediary and symbol of communitas” who serves the participation of the laity in the life and mission of the Church. This research proposes the deacon as a servant of the bond of communion within the Church (facilitating the relationship between the bishop/priest and his people), and between the People of God and the individual in need. Thus authentic diaconal ministry includes a vast array of many concrete contexts of pastoral importance where one does more than simply serve at Mass.
