Talking Prices is the first book to examine this question from a sociological perspective. On the basis of a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data, including interviews with art dealers in New York and Amsterdam, Olav Velthuis shows how contemporary art galleries juggle the contradictory logics of art and economics. In doing so, they rely on a highly ritualized business repertoire. For instance, a sharp distinction between a gallery's museumlike front space and its businesslike back space safeguards the separation of art from commerce. Velthuis shows that prices, far from being abstract numbers, convey rich meanings to trading partners that extend well beyond the works of art. A high price may indicate not only the quality of a work but also the identity of collectors who bought it before the artist's reputation was established. Such meanings are far from unequivocal. For some, a high price may be a symbol of status; for others, it is a symbol of fraud. Whereas sociological thought has long viewed prices as reducing qualities to quantities, this pathbreaking and engagingly written book reveals the rich world behind these numerical values. Art dealers distinguish different types of prices and attach moral significance to them. Thus the price mechanism constitutes a symbolic system akin to language.

Book excerpt: For most of the twentieth century, modernist viewers dismissed the architectural ornament of Louis H. Sullivan (1856-1924) and the majority of his theoretical writings as emotional outbursts of an outmoded romanticism. In this study, Lauren Weingarden reveals Sullivan's eloquent articulation of nineteenth-century romantic practices - literary, linguistic, aesthetic, spiritual, and nationalistic - and thus rescues Sullivan and his legacy from the narrow role imposed on him as a pioneer of twentieth-century modernism. Using three interpretive models, discourse theory, poststructural semiotic analysis, and a pragmatic concept of sign-functions, she restores the integrity of Sullivan's artistic choices and his historical position as a culminating figure within nineteenth-century romanticism. By giving equal weight to Louis Sullivan's writings and designs, Weingarden shows how he translated both Ruskin's tenets of Gothic naturalism and Whitman's poetry of the American landscape into elemental structural forms and organic ornamentation. Viewed as a site where various romantic discourses converged, Sullivan's oeuvre demands a cross-disciplinary exploration of each discursive practice, and its "rules of accumulation, exclusion, reactivation." The overarching theme of this study is the interrogation and restitution of those Foucauldian rules that enabled Sullivan to articulate architecture as a pictorial mode of landscape art, which he considered co-equal with the spiritual and didactic functions of landscape poetry.

Book excerpt: This essay examines the anthropological systems that create and define the value of artworks. Value, like quality, is a socially constructed phenomenon. The symbolic capital, or status and power, of multiple individuals influences the value of a work of art. Art world agents and their interrelations, not the physical nature or quality of an artwork, are constantly creating value for works of art. Primary dealers of contemporary art affect and manipulate these systems and relationships to increase the value of the work they sell. Dealers, or gallerists, build their own reputations and offer the symbolic capital they have accumulated as security to their artists. A dealer is constantly developing his symbolic capital, a network of 'credit' he creates with other art world agents through branding, gift exchange, gossip, and intimate relationships. Because the art world considers art priceless with certain invaluable truths, a dealer's workings must be characterized by an apparent disavowal of economic capital. In the short term, this appears to make no economic sense, but, in the long run, a gallery is able to convert the symbolic capital of their artists into economic capital. Once a gallerist has built a brand name for himself, he is able to consecrate artists with his art world credit. He uses his connections and symbolic power to pursue exhibitions, noncommercial support, and important acquisitions for his artists. These culturally awarded accolades are a quantifiable signal of quality to collectors and industry-wide professionals. These signals of quality build an artist's reputation, and hence symbolic capital, and are the building blocks of 'pricing scripts' that ultimately determine price increases for an artist's work. Art fairs provide dealers with an essential venue for networking and building symbolic capital. Sales are only a partial benefit of these trade fairs. Looking toward the future, dealers participate in fairs to reach a wider audience, to develop their brand names and to gain access to the cultural accolades that build the symbolic capital of their artists.
