Book excerpt: The timeless task of architecture is to create embodied, existential metaphors that structure and sustain our experience of the world. This vital role has been obscured in recent centuries, but maintains critical importance - even ethical imperative - in our increasingly urbanized habitat, where built objects are the predominant frame of human existence. Fixing verticals and horizontals, architecture is always a symbolic act: it describes the conditions of relationship between man and environment, whether integrated or isolated. The premise of this thesis is a search for the dimension of deeper meaning - missing in most contemporary buildings - that can help to reconnect us with a higher order and assert our place within it. Returning to first principles, it examines cultural constructions across a broad historical period to recall the archetypal language of architecture and its didactic function: concretizing elemental dichotomies and eternal human truths. The essential conditions of body and space, earth and sky have intuitive meaning and enduring implications - this a priori tectonic vocabulary is the basis for orientation and identification (enabling dwelling), and the focus of the thesis work. Its interest is the resonance between inner experience and external environment that engages us in powerful architectonic expressions, relating body, building and world. The work presented narrates these explorations on three levels, within the scope of Western architecture and its primary influences. Part 1 establishes a philosophical foundation for this generalizing approach, rooted in universal structures, and substantiates a synoptic viewpoint. Two ubiquitous models of natural hierarchy - the upright human figure and the stratified cosmos - are manifest in built form from time immemorial; Part 2 presents a body of historical research into these parallel realms of metaphor in traditional belief structures. Surveying the paradigm shifts (both physical and conceptual) that shape our present built environments, Part 3 culminates in a speculative discussion of contemporary power structures and conflicting spatial concepts today, where architecture supplies alternative realities and artificial 'worlds' instead of reinforcing meaningful existential connections. Approaching present and future uncertainties through archetypal absolute values, the objective of this discourse is to regain some common ground - underlying the fragmented contemporary condition - where reconciliation between man and environment may yet occur.

Since Hanna Pitkin’s seminal The Concept of Representation, the symbolic has been the least studied dimension of political representation. Innovatively adopting a discursive approach, this book - the first full-length treatment of symbolic representation - focuses on gender issues to tackle important questions such as: What are women and men symbols of, and how is gender constructed in policy discourse? It studies what functions symbolic representation fulfils in the construction of gender, what social roles get legitimized in policy discourse, and how this affects power constellations, ultimately revealing much about the relation between symbolic, descriptive, and substantive representation. Emanuela Lombardo and Petra Meier draw on theories of symbolic representation and gender, as well as rich primary material about political debates on labour and care issues, partnership and reproductive rights, gender violence, and quotas. Using this original data, the authors show that reconsidering symbolic representation from a discursive perspective makes explicit issues of (in)equality embedded within particular constructions, as well as their consequences for political representation and gender equality. This important exploration raises relevant new questions regarding the representation of gender that form valuable contributions to the fields of political science, political theory, sociology, and gender studies.

Book excerpt: The aim of this paper is to explore prison's class and symbolic dimensions in the Neoliberal Era. Neoliberalism was approached as the empowerment of the market which leads to the dismantlement of the social welfare state and to the strengthening of the penal state for the marginalised populations. Also, it was analysed as the 'conduct of conduct' in the Foucauldian sense, as it was argued that prison is a tool of government, functioning for the management of the marginalised populations. An effort was undertaken to discuss the differences of the US, the 'carceral example', with the European Union countries. The class and symbolic dimensions of punishment were first approached from a historical and a theoretical perspective respectively, before attempting to discuss neoliberalism, aiming to show the maintenance of prison's main characteristics through time under capitalism. It was argued that the dismantlement of the welfare state brought to the fore the destabilisation of the labour market and the concurrent strategies of responsibilisation which led to the increased use of imprisonment. The result is the phenomenon of mass imprisonment, mainly affecting poor and marginalised populations and communities, leading to their further exclusion and social control. Furthermore, the relation of the industry with the penal policies was discussed, as part of the passage from welfare to 'workfare' and 'prisonfare'. Concerning the symbolic dimensions of prisons, it was argued that the dominant representations of the criminals should be explored under the scope of the demonisation strategies, which aim to legitimise the harsher penal policies and to naturalise the discourse on 'criminal classes'. Therefore, emotional attitudes are emphasised, as leading to the uncritical acceptance of mass imprisonment. On the other hand, the risk management strategies were discussed, which despite having rationalistic and apolitical objectives, disguise the responsibilisation strategies of the neoliberal era and the narrative of institutionalised insecurity. The analysis of the actuarial practises showed that the targeting of the population as a whole marks the transition from the disciplinary society to the control society. The objective of this analysis was to establish an account of neoliberalism and the phenomenon of mass imprisonment, contributing to the radical analyses on prison aiming to provide argumentation for the promotion of radical social action towards prison abolition.
