Book excerpt: The research reported in this thesis focuses on the role of the syllable in speech production. Levelt's model of speech production (Levelt, 1989; Levelt, Roelofs, & Meyer, 1999) provided the general theoretical framework on which the empirical work presented in this thesis is based. One crucial assumption in Levelt's model is that word form representations in the mental lexicon are not syllabified. This hypothesis is based on the observation that syllable boundaries in connected speech often differ from syllabifications of isolated word forms. In Levelt's model, syllabification is a relatively late process in the speech production. Syllables are computed during prosodification, i.e. when preselected segments, which are only specified for their serial position within morphemes but not for their syllabic position, are associated to metrical frames. The aim of this thesis was to provide empirical evidence supporting the use of syllables in the process of speech production.

It was sponsored by the Center for Cognitive Science, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Linguistics and Psychology Departments. The conference was the second in a series of conferences on human experimental psychology: the first, held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Psychology Department, resulted in publication of the monograph Neural Mechanisms in Behavior, D. McFadden (Ed.), Springer-Verlag, 1980. The choice of the particular topic of the second conference was motivated by the belief that the state of knowledge of speech production had recently reached a critical mass, and that a good deal was to be gained from bringing together the foremost researchers in this field. The benefits were the opportunity for the participants to compare notes on their common problems, the publication of a monograph giving a comprehensive state-of-the-art picture of this research area, and the provision of enormous intellectual stimulus for local students of this topic.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Phonological retrieval is one aspect of language processing that is susceptible to age-related decline, although little is known about the interaction between aging and the particular phonological qualities of words. Syllable frequency, or the occurrence of specific syllables within the words of a language, has been shown to facilitate production in some languages, but has yielded inconsistent results in English, and has never been examined in older adults. The current project investigated the influence of first-syllable frequency on tip-of-the tongue (TOT) incidence and resolution, picture naming, and picture-word interference in young, young-old, and old-old adults. For TOT incidence, high-frequency first syllable targets elicited fewer TOT states relative to low-frequency for both groups of older adults, but not for young adults. Picture naming was also facilitated by high-frequency syllables, but only for old-old adults. In contrast, when a prime word with the same first syllable as the target was presented, i.e. for TOT resolution and picture-word interference, having a large syllable cohort was detrimental for production, with higher resolution rates and faster naming latencies for low-frequency first syllables. These findings support speech production models that allow for bidirectional activation between semantic, lexical, and phonological forms of words. Furthermore, the age-specific effects of syllable frequency provide insight into the progression of age-linked changes to phonological processes.

Book excerpt: Speech sound production is one of the most complex human activities: it is also one of the least well understood. This is perhaps not altogether surprising as many of the complex neurological and physiological processes involved in the generation and execution of a speech utterance remain relatively inaccessible to direct investigation, and must be inferred from careful scrutiny of the output of the system -from details of the movements of the speech organs themselves and the acoustic consequences of such movements. Such investigation of the speech output have received considerable impetus during the last decade from major technological advancements in computer science and biological transducing, making it possible now to obtain large quantities of quantative data on many aspects of speech articulation and acoustics relatively easily. Keeping pace with these advancements in laboratory techniques have been developments in theoretical modelling of the speech production process. There are now a wide variety of different models available, reflecting the different disciplines involved -linguistics, speech science and technology, engineering and acoustics. The time seems ripe to attempt a synthesis of these different models and theories and thus provide a common forum for discussion of the complex problem of speech production. Such an activity would seem particularly timely also for those colleagues in speech technology seeking better, more accurate phonetic models as components in their speech synthesis and automatic speech recognition systems.

At the end of this process, the tube is found divided into distinctive regions and an acoustic space emerges capable of generating speech sounds. Attaching this tube to a model, an inherently dynamic and efficient system is created. In the resulting system, optimal primitive trajectories are seen to naturally exist in the acoustic space and the regions defined in the tube correspond to the main places of articulation for oral vowels and plosive consonants. All this implies that these speech sounds are inherent properties of not only the modeled acoustic tube but also of the human speech production system. This book stands as a valuable resource for accomplished and aspiring speech scientists as well as for other interested persons in search for an introduction to speech acoustics that takes an unconventional path.
