Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how Bubonic Plague arrived and spread through parts of Australia in the period 1900-1925. In particular it concentrates on the epidemic of Plague which affected Sydney in 1900 and in the following years. The book examines the impact of Plague on Sydney’s population and in particular how medical and governmental authorities struggled to come to grips with what Plague really was and how it spread. Without any doubt the Plague epidemic that broke out in Sydney in 1900 was the most devastating and traumatic event in Australia’s 19th Century history and the greatest social disaster to affect Australia’s population. The book explores the impact that Plague had on ordinary people and how they behaved and reacted during the epidemic crisis. At a public level this outbreak of Plague produced some of the greatest scenes of fear, hysteria and panic ever seen in Australia. The book also delves into how Government and Medical officials fought among themselves re how best to control the pandemic and stop in spreading. Plague also produced some extraordinary scenes of finding someone to blame. Neighbour turned on neighbour and people blamed the Chinese and other immigrant communities for introducing and spreading the disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From her first taste of the air when she joined Bert Hinkler in the cockpit for a joy ride in 1928, Lores Bonney was hooked. With her aviation licence and the support of her husband, she took to Australian and international skies and braved the challenge of long-distance flying. Taking Flight draws from the National Library of Australia’s rich archives and manuscript collection to present the tale of Lores Bonney, the first woman to circumnavigate the Australian continent by air, the first woman acknowledged to fly from Australia to England, and the first solo pilot to fly from Australia to Cape Town, South Africa. Aviation writer Kristen Alexander intimately illuminates the woman behind the audacious pilot, exploring her highs and lows and struggle to gain and maintain her place as one of Australia’s great aviation pioneers.

Download or read book Dillon The drove to Port Darwin written by James Cox and published by BookPOD. This book was released on 2022-02-02 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic of Australian Courage, Endurance, High Adventure … and Family Love. Dramatic incidents of Australian History, strikingly recreated. DILLON: The drove to Port Darwin 1872 Within this exciting true story of droving horses and cattle across the continent of Australia, re-discovered newspaper reports and diary notes depict real actual places and events. Thousands of pieces of lost information, like a smashed pain of window glass, when reconstructed into a facsimile of its original form, give us an image again through the window to Australia in the year 1872. This enthralling story portrays the colonial enterprise of two Australian pioneers – Mathew Dillon Cox and that of his wife Catherine in 1872. Compiled with attention to detail by his great grandson James Cox, set in Rockhampton Queensland and later in the Northern Territory after Palmerston had been surveyed to become Port Darwin, this most northern Australian town grew alongside a tent camp for the building of the famous Overland Telegraph Line, from Port Darwin to Adelaide, South Australia’s greatest engineering and communications achievement. James devoted 7 years of intensive research to write DILLON – The drove to Port Darwin 1872. His reconstruction is beautifully written, most importantly factual, accurate, interesting and indeed easy reading due to progressively dated stages of events – high adventure, love and devotion, gutsy enterprise, the lure of gold, encounters with the Aboriginal people, then battling and surviving brutal months of danger crossing the Northern Territory. Our Australian colonial heritage. When you read this thrilling adventure you will want to read it through time and again.
