Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a nice lady like Anne Audley become Lady de Winter, palace spy and arch-villainess of The Three Musketeers? Was she always a dangerous woman? Where did she come from and what is her story? The year is 1623. Europe quakes with dangerous ideas emerging from the halls of science and an unending holy war directed from the citadels of power. Lady Anne avoids political intrigue by living with her husband and toddler in the English countryside. But when a Vatican agent arrives on her doorstep with a scheme involving the king of England, Anne's life is forever transformed. Anne and her husband Harald, Duke of Southampton, are drawn into a Machiavellian plot to negotiate a marriage contract between England's Prince Charles, a Protestant, and the Spanish Infanta, a member of the most powerful royal family in Europe, Roman Catholics all. When the crown prince arrives in Madrid for the marriage negotiations, the Vatican agent presses him to embrace Catholicism, but Charles resists. As the prince continues to woo Princess Maria, Anne realizes the Vatican agent has given up hope of converting him and is instead twisting a more sinister plot into motion. She must thwart his scheme before the prince steps into a lethal trap. The Initiation of Lady de Winter allows readers a second look at this unapologetic woman who, in a world ruled by patriarchy, dared to be as strong as a man.

Download or read book Women Art and the Politics of Identity in Eighteenth Century Europe written by Melissa Hyde and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth century is recognized as a complex period of dramatic epistemic shifts that would have profound effects on the modern world. Paradoxically, the art of the era continues to be a relatively neglected field within art history. While women's private lives, their involvement with cultural production, the project of Enlightenment, and the public sphere have been the subjects of ground-breaking historical and literary studies in recent decades, women's engagement with the arts remains one of the richest and most under-explored areas for scholarly investigation. This collection of new essays by specialist authors addresses women's activities as patrons and as "patronized" artists over the course of the century. It provides a much needed examination, with admirable breadth and variety, of women's artistic production and patronage during the eighteenth century. By opening up the specific problems and conflicts inherent in women's artistic involvements from the perspective of what was at stake for the eighteenth-century women themselves, it also acts as a corrective to the generalizing and stereotyping about the prominence of those women, which is too often present in current day literature. Some essays are concerned with how women's involvement in the arts allowed them to fashion identities for themselves (whether national, political, religious, intellectual, artistic, or gender-based) and how such self-fashioning in turn enabled them to negotiate or intervene in the public domains of culture and politics where "The Woman Question" was so hotly debated. Other essays examine how men's patronage of women also served as a vehicle for self-fashioning for both artist and sponsor. Artists and patrons discussed include: Carriera; Queen Lovisa Ulrike and Chardin; the Bourbon Princesses Mlle Clermont, Mme Adélaïde and Nattier; the Duchess of Osuna and Goya; Marie-Antoinette and Vigée-Lebrun; Labille-Guiard; Queen Carolina of Naples, Prince Stanislaus Poniatowski of Poland and Kauffman; David and his students, Mesdames Benoist, Lavoisier and Mongez.

Book excerpt: The knights of the Order of St John did not live in a political, social, cultural, and private vacuum. As human beings they had personal needs which sometimes clashed with their vows of celibacy taken on becoming professed members of the Order. This book does not intend to discredit this illustrious Order of St John and its members...The cases dealt with in this highly researched study are presented in a wider context of contemporary social, political, religious, and cultural history in order to understand the milieu of such phenomena.
Download or read book Unrecorded Histories written by Charles S. Ricketts and published by . This book was released on 1933 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight short pieces by Ricketts with six illustrations by the author (printed as brownish red silhouettes against a blank background), published posthumously. It is not known precisely what Ricketts intended for these pieces, as some were first intended by be presented by Ricketts as his translations from the French and ascribed to a previously unknown (and completely imaginary) poet, Jean Paul Raymond. But others of the pieces are signed by Ricketts in his own name. Each is dedicated to a friend of Ricketss'. Not particularly an accomplished fictionalist at any time, he nonetheless provided interesting, if unusually constructed, stories in this beautifully produced edition.
Download or read book Malta s Parliament written by Godfrey A. Pirotta and published by Midsea Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book chronicles the political history and evolution of Malta's Parliament from 1800 to 2003 and is divided into three sections. Section One (1800-1921), the shortest of the three sections, with its study of the workings of the colonial style Council of Government, explores the emergence of a partially elected Chamber and the continuing Maltese struggle for responsible government. Section Two, which covers the period 1921 to 1964, examines Malta's first responsible government Parliament at work until its dissolution in 1933 when the 1921 Constitution which had created it, was first suspended and later withdrawn. It also gives a brief look at the events which followed until responsible government was re-instated in 1947. This section then takes the reader through the issues debated in Parliament and the Parliamentary process which culminated in Malta's Independence in 1964. Section Three covers the period 1964-2003, and allows the reader to explore Malta's transition to Republican Government, the closure of the military base and its implications for a Malta free from the last vestiges of colonialism, and the long road to EU membership." "The approach adopted in this study is unique since the author focuses on events as they arose in Parliament and hence allows the reader to see the vital role that Parliament has played in the political life of this micro-state. It is Parliament that speaks to the reader and ultimately it is up to the reader to make judgments about these events."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book The Comic Mind written by Gerald Mast and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1979-09-15 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although books on the comedies of the silent era abound, few have attempted to survey film comedy as a whole—its history and evolution, how the philosophical visions of its greatest artists and directors have shaped its traditions, and how these visions have informed both the meaning and manner of their work. Blending information with interpretation, description with analysis, Mast traces the development of screen comedy from the first crude efforts of Edison and Lumière to the subtlety and psychological complexity of Annie Hall. As he guides the reader through detailed discussions of specific films, Mast reveals the structures, the values, and the cinematic techniques which have appeared and reappeared in comic cinema. The second edition of The Comic Mind treats the comic developments of the 1970s in terms of the traditions of film comedy set forth in the first edition, including a discussion of the evolution of Jacques Tati and the emergence of Mel Brooks and Woody Allen as the two greatest American comic stylists of the seventies. "The most comprehensive study of film comedy yet written in English. . . .The book's extensive index with references to companies from which 16mm prints of many of the cited films may be rented will be of great value to the film teacher and audiovisual librarian."—Choice
