Book The Kissinger Saga

Download or read book The Kissinger Saga written by Evi Kurz and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2009-03-12 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unrivalled insight into the early life of Henry Kissinger 'A triumph of journalistic digging, and it makes for a little gem of a book.. a magnificent story about boyhood, identity and belonging' SUNDAY TIMES 'Tells a fascinating and tragic story.. Kurz does a fine job of tracing the early history of the Kissinger family and evoking their happy days before the coming of Nazism' LITERARY REVIEW 'No interviews about my private life' has always been Henry Kissinger's response to curious journalists. But journalist Evi Kurz from Furth, the Kissingers' home town in southern Germany, proposed a family portrait and eventually won the trust of both brothers. This is the story of two Americans of German-Jewish descent: one of them a key figure in Cold War diplomacy and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, the other a top businessman - two lives which are exemplars of the American dream. When Henry was born in 1923 and Walter in 1924 the Kissingers had for decades been part of a flourishing Jewish midde class in Furth, a market town in northern Bavaria. Evi Kurz describes the gradual but remorseless destruction of this community in the 1930s; the Kissinger family's decision to flee to London and then New York in 1938; the war years in America; and the hugely successful careers in postwar America of both brothers, who always remembered their home and roots in a small German town.

Book The Bitcoin Saga

Download or read book The Bitcoin Saga written by Rachna Singh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Bitcoin Saga: A Mixed Montage' is an exciting story about the birth and growth of bitcoin and the blockchain technology underpinning it. The book takes the untutored reader on a thrilling rollercoaster ride through the complexities and myriad facets of cryptocurrencies. The sub-prime crisis of 2008 and the Cypherpunk movement sets the stage for the advent of the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto and the release of the first cache of bitcoins. The narrative takes on a Houdini like magical quality as it unravels the skeins of the Dark Web and the secret of the Silk Road. The story of the Mt Gox heist and Nostradamus like prophecies of bitcoin doom add a generous dollop of intrigue to the crypto story. The cryptocurrency regulatory-tax tales of countries like USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, China, India etc give the narrative an intellectual slant. The bitcoin saga ends on an introspective note. The blockchain technology has enormous power to change the world. Whether it will be a benevolent Titan or a Frankenstein monster, only time can tell.

Book The Red and the White A Family Saga of the American West

Download or read book The Red and the White A Family Saga of the American West written by Andrew R. Graybill and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Labriola Center American Indian National Book Award. One of the American West’s bloodiest—and least-known—massacres is searingly re-created in this generation-spanning history of native-white intermarriage. At dawn on January 23, 1870, four hundred men of the Second U.S. Cavalry attacked and butchered a Piegan camp near the Marias River in Montana in one of the worst slaughters of Indians by American military forces in U.S. history. Coming to avenge the murder of their father—a former fur-trader named Malcolm Clarke who had been killed four months earlier by their Piegan mother’s cousin—Clarke ’s own two sons joined the cavalry in a slaughter of many of their own relatives. In this groundbreaking work of American history, Andrew R. Graybill places the Marias Massacre within a larger, three-generation saga of the Clarke family, particularly illuminating the complex history of native-white intermarriage in the American Northwest.

Since its founding in 1881, Canadian Pacific has made an indelible mark on the lives of Canadians. Most commonly associated with its iconic railway, at its height CP also ran hotels, steamships, and an airline, and had myriad involvements in immigration, irrigation, resource development, war contributions, and international trade. It has been said that no other single corporation has shaped Canadian national identity as much as CP. Railway Nation: Tales of the World’s Greatest Travel System is a compilation of more than fifty thrilling and historically significant stories based on colourful anecdotes and archival sources dating back to the company's golden era. From the construction of the ground-breaking Spiral Tunnels on what was previously the most dangerous and accident-prone stretch of railway track in the Rockies, to the CPR-manufactured Valentine tanks that helped the Soviet Union fight off the Nazis in World War II, to the long and frustrating struggle of CP stewardesses fighting against sexist employment policies, this lively and nuanced portrait of an iconic company is illustrated with fascinating archival photography and will be an essential addition to any Canadian history buff's library.

Book Gilbert Szlumper and Leo Amery of the Southern Railway

Download or read book Gilbert Szlumper and Leo Amery of the Southern Railway written by John King and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very few diaries of directors and senior managers of the Big Four railways have survived to enter the public domain. There are, however, two notable Southern Railway diarists whose records have been available in archives for some years, but have been largely ignored by historians; Southern Railway General Manager Gilbert Szlumper and Director Leopold Amery. Their remarkable diaries are addressed in this insightful book, which gives a slightly different view of the company in contrast to the almost sanitized histories by some writers. The surviving diaries of Szlumper are far from complete. They begin in 1936 and continue into the war years, but there are several gaps. Throughout, Szlumper comments on individuals and developments, revealing little-known facts and the circumstances that meant he could never truly achieve his potential. Formally retiring in 1942, he died in 1969, after which his diaries entered the public domain.Leopold Amery was director of the Southern Railway from 1932. A Birmingham Member of Parliament for many years, he was a statesman of some stature, his high offices including Secretary of State for the Colonies in the 1920s. In his autobiography, Amery writes very little on the railway, although he does comment on its family atmosphere. His diaries, which are in the public domain in a Cambridge University archive, have been published in two volumes but Amerys fascinating business activities were omitted by the publisher, and like Szlumper he comments on individuals and developments. The diary information of these two exceptional men has been supplemented by information from the railway, state archives and other sources, and many of the photographs have never been published before.

Book True Story of Women Peace Train

Download or read book True Story of Women Peace Train written by Litha Musyimi-Ogana and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African women conceived the idea of the Womens Peace Train from Kampala to Johannesburg during the Second Preparatory Committee of the United Nations World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD). The objective of the Womens Peace Train (WPT) was to pass on a strong message to the continent leaders, war mongers, armies, guerrillas, arms traders, and dealers in the African continent that women wanted peace and stability for their children. In its ten-day journey across seven countries, the Peace Train called upon the ringleaders and perpetrators of wars in Africa to end them forthwith. Arguing that women in Africa bear the brunt of the war burden, African women saw the WSSD as a good opportunity to campaign for the end of these wars and used the peace train to pass on the peace message.
