Book The Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research SIN

Download or read book The Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research SIN written by Andreas Pritzker and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research (SIN). The institute was founded in 1968 and became part of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in 1988. Its founding occurred at a time when physics was generally considered the key discipline for technological and social development. This step was unusual for a small country like Switzerland and showed courage and foresight. Equally unusual were the accomplishments of SIN, compared with similar institutes in the rest of the world, as well as its influence on Swiss, and partially also on international politics of science. That this story is now available in a widely understandable form is due to the efforts of some physicists, who took the initiative as long as contemporary witnesses could still be questioned. As is usually the case, official documents always show just an excerpt of what really happened. An intimate portrayal of people who contributed to success requires personal memories. This text relies on both sources. In addition, the events are illustrated with numerous photos.

Book Negotiating the Review of the WTO Dispute Settlement Understanding

Download or read book Negotiating the Review of the WTO Dispute Settlement Understanding written by Thomas Alexander Zimmermann and published by Cameron May. This book was released on 2006 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the establishment of the WTO on 1 January 1995, the dispute settlement mechanism has arguably been the most active part of the Organization. In the first ten years up to 31 December 2004, a total of 324 consultation requests have been notified to the WTO. Dispute settlement practice has thus contributed to the evolution of the multilateral trading system even at times when political negotiations made little head way. Since late 1997, Members have engaged, under different mandates, in negotiations on improvements and clarifications to the dispute settlement mechanism. So far, none of these efforts have borne fruit and all the negotiating deadlines have lapsed without success. Currently, negotiations are continuing, however without any specific time limit. This book reviews the DSU reform negotiating process since 1998. It discusses the proposals that Members have submitted under the Doha mandated review in 2002 and 2003, w

Book The Regulation of Gambling European and National Perspectives

Download or read book The Regulation of Gambling European and National Perspectives written by Alan Littler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 2005 Tilburg University hosted for the first time an international Colloquium on the European and National Perspectives of the Regulation of Gambling. The results of this exciting day are reflected in this book which brings together a wide range of perspectives from the contemporary debate surrounding the regulation of gambling markets within the context of the European Union. Not only does the book encompass both ends of the spectrum of the current discussion; it also brings together the perspectives of academics, lawyers and operators. The debate on the regulation of gambling has been gathering pace following a series of judgments of the ECJ. In 2006 gambling was excluded from the proposed Services Directive, and the European Commission commenced infringement proceedings against a handful of Member States regarding restrictions on the supply of sports betting services. Given these developments and being one of the very few publications concerned with this topic, this book will serve as a timely and valuable contribution for all those interested in this emerging and at times decisive debate.

  • Author : Leonora Carrington
  • Publisher : New York Review of Books

  • ISBN : 1681374641
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book The Hearing Trumpet written by Leonora Carrington and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An old woman enters into a fantastical world of dreams and nightmares in this surrealist classic admired by Björk and Luis Buñuel. Leonora Carrington, painter, playwright, and novelist, was a surrealist trickster par excellence, and The Hearing Trumpet is the witty, celebratory key to her anarchic and allusive body of work. The novel begins in the bourgeois comfort of a residential corner of a Mexican city and ends with a man-made apocalypse that promises to usher in the earth’s rebirth. In between we are swept off to a most curious old-age home run by a self-improvement cult and drawn several centuries back in time with a cross-dressing Abbess who is on a quest to restore the Holy Grail to its rightful owner, the Goddess Venus. Guiding us is one of the most unexpected heroines in twentieth-century literature, a nonagenarian vegetarian named Marian Leatherby, who, as Olga Tokarczuk writes in her afterword, is “hard of hearing” but “full of life.”

Download or read book Everest The First Ascent written by Harriet Tuckey and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-05-21 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner: Banff Award for Mountain and Wilderness Literature The British Sportsbook Award for Outstanding General Sports Writing The Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature Finalist for the HW Fisher Biographer's Prize Everest was not conquered by force of will alone. It required immense planning, research, and preparation. Dr. Griffith Pugh’s role in the first successful ascent of Everest in 1953 by Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay was absolutely pivotal, yet this story has until now remained untold. As the expedition’s physiological consultant, Pugh designed almost every aspect of the survival strategy for the expedition, the acclimatisation programme, the oxygen- and fluid-intake regime, the diet, the clothing and the high altitude boots. A spirit of gentleman-amateurism had prevailed previously and this new scientific professionalism ensured the success of the expedition and opened the way for a stunning stream of mountaineering successes. Within five years climbers had scaled nearly all of the world’s highest peaks in relative safety. Dr. Pugh became known as one of the fathers of altitude medicine, saving the lives of several members of Hillary’s expedition to Mount Makalu, and pioneering safety techniques for mountaineers and hill walkers. This is also the story of Griffith Pugh, the man, a troubled and eccentric person who had difficulties in sustaining personal relationships in both his personal and professional lives. His daughter and author of this biography, Harriet Tuckey, did not discover the extent of her father’s role in the success of the climb until he was honored late in life at the Royal Geographical Society. His story shines a necessary and fascinating light on one of mankind's greatest achievments.

Book Thermal Safety of Chemical Processes

Download or read book Thermal Safety of Chemical Processes written by Francis Stoessel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-06-25 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the author's many years of experience in practicing safety assessment in industry and teaching students or professionals in this area, the topic of this book is seldom found on university curricula and many professionals do not have the knowledge required to interpret thermal data in terms of risks. For this reason, Francis Stoessel adopts a unique systematic how-to-do approach: Each chapter begins with a case history illustrating the topic and presenting the lessons learned from the incident. In so doing, he analyzes a goldmine of numerous examples stemming from industrial practice, additionally providing a series of problems or case studies at the end of each chapter. Divided into three distinct sections, part one looks at the general aspects of thermal process safety, while Part 2 deals with mastering exothermal reactions. The final section discusses the avoidance of secondary reactions, including heat accumulation and thermal confinement.
