Book excerpt: Celebrate the world’s most seductive instrument. An obsessive, full-color book in the irresistible format of Shoes and Handbags—which together have over 700,000 copies in print—guitarS delivers a feast of 500 guitars in vibrant color, plus players, makers, legends, myths, and more. Here are guitars that made history, that changed the course of music, that inspired new generations of players and listeners. Here are milestones in the guitar's search for its true self—Torres's classical, the amazing Gibson L-5—and experiments that ushered in a new world of sound—Rickenbacker's "Frying Pan" and Les Paul's "Log." Plus B. B. King's Lucille, Willie Nelson's Trigger, Eric Clapton's Brownie, the J-160E that John Lennon played during his 1968 "bed-in" with Yoko, Jimi Hendrix's hand-painted Flying V in full psychedelic regalia. And the far-out Gittler—no body, no neck, no peghead, yet every inch a guitar. Also here are profiles of famous builders, including C. F. Martin, Orville Gibson, Leo Fender—the Henry Ford of guitars—and the mad genius Lloyd Loar. And individual luthiers, like Linda Manzer (her Pikasso II has 42 tunable strings), the maverick Ken Parker, and old-world artisan John D'Angelico, staring at skyscrapers from his Lower East Side shop and creating the ultimate art deco masterpiece, "The New Yorker." Marrying visual pleasure with layers of information, Guitars captures the soul, the significance, history, magic, and the raw mojo of this most beloved of instruments.

Book Jazz and the Classical Guitar

Download or read book Jazz and the Classical Guitar written by Ken Hatfield and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2011-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to familiarize classical guitarists with the musical vocabulary of jazz, and to encourage jazz guitarists to explore the beautiful sonorities and limitless expressive potential of the classical guitar. the first half of the book contains theoretical explanations focused on harmonic analysis of the types of chord changes and song forms one routinely encounters in the jazz repertoire, as it demonstrates the application of all twelve notes of the chromatic scale to any chord in any situation. the second half of the book is comprised of Ken Hatfield's original compositions and transcriptions of his improvised solos. Both the tunes and the transcribed solos demonstrate how the theoretical material in the first half of the book can be artfully applied within the context of compositions representing three musical genres that have served as wellsprings of renewal throughout jazz's deep and illustrious history: blues, rhythm changes, and standards. the 14-track companion CD includes all the music from the second half of the book. the music is recorded in a variety of contexts, including solo, duo, trio, and quartets of differing strumentations. Two of the songs are designed so that the student can play along with the rhythm section. Twelve songs feature Ken playing the heads and the solos. Ten of these are transcribed in their entirety, while two leave the solos for the student to transcribe (in total or in part) as ear training exercises.

Book Arts Management Cultural Policy the African Diaspora

Download or read book Arts Management Cultural Policy the African Diaspora written by Antonio C. Cuyler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book centers people of African descent as cultural leaders to challenge the myth that they do not know how or care about managing and preserving their culture. Arts Management, Cultural Policy, & the African Diaspora also presents comparative case studies of the challenges, differences, similarities, and successes in approaches to cultural leadership across multiple cultural contexts throughout the diaspora. This volume disrupts the enduring and systemic global marginalization, oppression, and subjugation that threatens and undermines people of African descent’s cultural contributions to humanity. The most important distinguishing feature of the volume is its geographical use of the African diaspora to explore the subjects of arts management and cultural policy which, to date, no volume has done before. Furthermore, the volume’s comparative examination of ten critical, historical, practical, and theoretical questions makes it a significant contribution to the literatures in Arts Management, Cultural Policy, Cultural, Africana, African American, and Ethnic studies.

Download or read book Drew s Blues written by Drew Page and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Congratulations on a much needed book on the Big Band era, especially from the viewpoint of the ‘side man’. Having been one for about eight years before becoming a ‘leader’ I can really appreciate your approach. A bandleader is no better than the men behind him and I have had some great ones, including of course Drew Page.” —Freddy Martin Having lived behind the scenes during the Big Band era of the thirties and forties, Page invites us to share that era with him. An instrumentalist or sideman, in many touring bands, he recounts friendships with now-famous as well as unknown musicians who made American dance music. Like them, Drew Page loved his music and the road. He did not want to stay in one place and one job for thirty years, repeating one year or experience thirty times. He wanted to see things, to observe people and places. After a lifetime of traveling and music, “every town began to seem like home.” Page’s life was touched with humor, disappointment, triumph, and some tragedy. “ Perhaps it’s the variety of my experiences, none seeming to relate to the others, that has given my life its discontinuity.” Certainly, discontinuity characterized his daily life, but continuity–his music–characterized its essence. Brought together by their art, the traveling bandmembers were apt to encounter each other any place, any time, and so they avoided goodbyes. “I’ll be seeing you.’ That’s the way I left Harry James and the boys in the band,” recalls Page. In this well-illustrated autobiography, he tells us what it was like to travel in the days before paved roads, and how the Great Depression, the death of vaudeville, and World War II affected the music business. He gives us anecdotes about the famous musicians he worked with–Harry James, Red Nichols, Freddy Martin among others–and he talks about his fellow sidemen. His narrative unrolls like a scroll inscribed with the names of those who made American dance music and jazz famous. Every music lover, nostalgia seeker, and student of American culture will want to own this book.

It combines contemporary and historical analysis of the economic and social impact of music tourism, with discussions of the cultural politics of authenticity and identity. Music tourism evokes nostalgia and meaning, and celebrates both heritage and hedonism. It is a product of commercialisation that can create community, but that also often demands artistic compromise. Diverse case studies, from the USA and UK to Australia, Jamaica and Vanuatu, illustrate the global extent of music tourism, its contradictions and pleasures.
