Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "According to Cherokee tradition, the place of creation is Kituwah, located at the center of the world and home of the most sacred and oldest of all beloved or mother towns. Just by entering Kituwah, or indeed any village site, Cherokees reexperience the creation of the world, when the water beetle first surfaced with a piece of mud that later became the island on which they lived. People of Kituwah is a comprehensive account of the spiritual worldview and lifeways of the Eastern Cherokee people, from the creation of the world to today. Building on vast primary and secondary materials, native and non-native, this book provides an in-depth look not only at what the Cherokees perceive and understand--their notions of space and time, marriage and love, death and the afterlife, healing and traditional medicine, and rites and ceremonies--but also at how their religious life evolved both before and after the calamitous coming of colonialism and Christianity. Through the collaborative efforts of John D. Loftin and Benjamin E. Frey, this book offers an in-depth understanding of Cherokee culture and society"--

Book Godspeed

Download or read book Godspeed written by Casey Legler and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A memoir for our times.” —Michael Stipe “A coming-of-age drama captured through poetic prose and convincing honesty.” —Kirkus Reviews “I swim for every chance to get wasted—after every meet, every weekend, every travel trip. This is what I look forward to and what I tell no one: the burn of it down my throat, to my soul curled up in my lungs, the sharpest pain all over it—it seizes and stretches, becoming alive again, and is the only thing that makes sense.” At fifteen, Casey Legler is already one of the fastest swimmers in the world. She is also an alcoholic, isolated from her family, and incapable of forming lasting connections with those around her. Driven to compete at the highest levels, sent far away from home to train with the best coaches and teams, she finds herself increasingly alone and alienated, living a life of cheap hotels and chlorine-worn skin, anonymous sexual encounters and escalating drug use. Even at what should be a moment of triumph—competing at age sixteen in the 1996 Olympics—she is an outsider looking in, procuring drugs for Olympians she hardly knows, and losing her race after setting a new world record in the qualifying heats. After submitting to years of numbing training in France and the United States, Casey can see no way out of the sinister loneliness that has swelled and festered inside her. Yet wondrously, when it is almost too late, she discovers a small light within herself, and senses a point of calm within the whirlwind of her life. In searing, evocative, visceral prose, Casey gives language to loneliness in this startling story of survival, defiance, and of the embers that still burn when everything else in us goes dark.

Book Four Centuries of Southern Indians

Download or read book Four Centuries of Southern Indians written by Hudson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indians of the Southeast had the most highly centralized and complex social structure of all the aboriginal peoples in the continental United States. They lived in large towns and villages, built monumental mounds and earthworks, enjoyed rich religious and artistic achievements, and maintained a flourishing economy based on agriculture and complemented by time-honored hunting and gathering techniques. Yet they have remained relatively unknown to most scholars and laymen, in part because of a lack of collaboration between historians and anthropologists. Four Centuries of Southern Indians is a collection of nine essays which allow both historians and anthropologists to make their necessary contributions to a fuller understanding of the southern Indians. The essays span four hundred years, beginning with French and Spanish relations with the Timucuan Indians in northern Florida in the sixteenth century and ending with the modern Cherokees transported to Oklahoma. The interim topics include the social structure of the Tuscaroras of North Carolina in the eighteenth century, the role southern Indians played in the American Revolution, the removal of the southern Indians to the Indian Territory, and Cherokee beliefs about sorcery and witchcraft. This collection of essays and the cooperation between historians and anthropologists which it incorporates signify the beginning of what will undoubtedly prove a fruitful approach to the study of southern Indians.
