Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sweet Potato: A Handbook for the Practical Grower Flowers and seed. Although rarely producing owers and less frequently maturing perfect seed in the sweet potato producing areas of the United States, occa sionally a small bell or morning-glory - shaped bloom, with a purple throat and white margin, may be noticed in commercial fields. Matured seed may be produced if the growing period is prolonged by the use of artificial means. These seeds, however, are unreliable for use in perpetuating varieties as the resulting plants cannot be depended on as coming true to the mother plant. In fact, they may differ widely among themselves. This characteristic enables the production of new varieties by selecting strong and prepotent offspring. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Expedition Under the Command of Lewis and Clark, Vol. 1 of 4 My commentary relates mainly to geography, ethnology, and natural history; but it is too extensive and diversified to be concisely described, and if it cannot speak for itself, there is nothing to be said about it. I wish that the literal extracts from the codices were more copious than they are; but all books, even such as this one, have necessary limits. The rest Of the new matter in these volumes consists Of a Supplement to Jefierson's Memoir of Lewis, Memoirs Of Clark and of Cass, respectively, a bibliography, a much needed index, this preface, and various illustrations. The modern map was selected as being on about the same scale as Captain Clark's original, thus facilitating comparison Of his with our geography. But as it was not drawn for this work, I am responsible for nothing that appears upon it excepting the red marks I have made to indicate the route. These will be found as accurate as the map permits them to be; but the result is to be taken simply as a diagram. Book Growing and Handling Sweet Potatoes in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Growing and Handling Sweet Potatoes in California Classic Reprint written by Donald Rockwell Porter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growing and Handling Sweet Potatoes in California The term seed as applied to sweet potatoes is a misnomer, just as in the case of Irish potatoes. True seed, developing from flowers and fruit, is seldom seen in the United States, although it has been known to form in southern Florida. Occasionally sweet potatoes bloom in southern California, but seed is rarely formed. However, seed has such a universal meaning among growers that it will be used in this discussion to mean the enlarged portions o-f the root, commonly known as sweet potatoes. Probably one of the limiting factors in the production of a profitable crop of sweet potatoes is the inability to secure good seed in those states where seed certification is not prao ticed. In California neither the demand for certified seed nor the acreage grown at present seems to justify certification. With pro-per precautions it is possible for the grower to select high quality seed from his own fields. The sweet potato itself consists of a root, originally a fibrous feeding root, which in the process of development has thickened for a greater or less distance from the central stem. On each such thickened root, or potato, are found four rows of lateral fibrous feeding roots, which usually disappear before the crop is mature, leaving only slight depressions where they were attached. Fro-m the neighborhood of the root scars, adventitious buds originate and under favorable growing conditions, sprouts are formed. These sprouts have an independent root system and are only weakly connected with the mother potato, fro-m which, however, they derive most of their nourishment. Until they are separated and set. In the Open field. The sweet potato has no true rest period, for the sprouts may start growing at any time under suitable moisture and temperature conditions and often do so in the field when harvesting is delayed and in the storage house in the later part of the storage season. Download or read book Sweet Potato Production in California Classic Reprint written by Joseph Tooker Rosa and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sweet Potato Production in California The potatoes used for propagating are called seed or seed stock. The smaller potatoes ranging from one to two inches in diameter are most suitable for this purpose. Larger potatoes may be used, but they are more expensive and do not produce so many plants from a given quantity of seed stock. Where it is necessary to use large potatoes, the yield of plants can be increased by splitting the potatoes lengthwise, and bedding with the flat side down. The selection of sweet potato seed is discussed in detail at the end of this circular. Growers in the Turlock district allow about 400 pounds of seed for each acre to be planted. From to plants to the acre are required, depending on the distance of planting. If there is no disease, the seed disinfected, the hotbed properly prepared and carefully handled, 200 pounds of seed should produce enough plants for one acre. Book Sweet Potatoes

Download or read book Sweet Potatoes written by John Frederick Duggar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sweet Potatoes: Culture and Uses To secure the sets for transplanting, the eyes or buds on the Sweet potato must be sprouted. For this purpose considerable heat is required, and germination takes place in especially prepared open beds, in cold frames, or in hotbeds, the kind of bed used depending on the climate and on the degree of forcing desired. For an early crop, bottom heat is desirable. This is provided either by the fermentation of manure or by flue heat from a small furnace, the former method being most fre quently employed. The latter method, however, permits of a more complete regulation of the amount of heat, and has other advantages which recommend it to those who cultivate the Sweet potato on a large scale for market. For the sweet-potato-plant bed select a location somewhat protected on the north Side. Build an ordinary plank cold frame 6 feet wide and of any length desired, facing toward the south and having its north wall several inches higher than its south wall. On the outside bank dirt against the frame and protect the bed against drainage water by a Shallow drain around the outside. Protect the bed against moles by means of a drain or by planking the frame below the surface of the ground. Within the frame remove the earth to a depth of 2 to 12 inches; spread a thin layer of leaves or litter on the bottom of this excavation, to assist in draining the bed and to retain the heat. Then on this lit ter place a layer of manure 2 to 12 inches thick, the thickness of the layer depending on the amount of heat required. Level and pack the manure and on it place a layer of sand or soil 17} to 3 inches thick. On this place the sweet potatoes in a horizontal position, not touching each other. If large roots are used they may be Split lengthwise, placing the cut surface downward. Cover with sand, soil, or fine woods earth until the upper Side of the sweet potato is covered at least 1 inch deep, or better 2 to 3 inches deep. After the Sweet potatoes are covered the upper surface of the earth within the frame will be either on a level with the ground outside or 1 to 6 inches above the level of the surrounding soil, according to the depth of excavation made in starting the bed. A bed with its sur face considerably higher than the surrounding Soil is better drained, but is liable to suffer from drought or to require more watering than a lower bed. Book The Culture and Diseases of the Sweet Potato Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Culture and Diseases of the Sweet Potato Classic Reprint written by Jacob Joseph Taubenhaus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture and Diseases of the Sweet Potato The time is rapidly approaching when, as a food, the sweet potato will share equal honors with that of the white potato. Although a tropical plant, its commercial value has been recognized by the American growers of the south who adopted it as an important money crop. Furthermore, it has become a staple food product in the average American home. The sweet potato is a typical truck crop, thriving best in light sandy loams. With this in mind, its future is unlimited. Texas alone possesses enough typical land to grow sweet potatoes for the entire population Of the United States. Moreover, many of the southern states such as Alabama, Georgia and others can produce sweet potatoes sufficient to feed the entire world. With this crop rapidly coming into prominence and as knowledge of sweet potato storage increases, thereby reducing the losses from rotting, the day is not far distant when we will be in a position to export and to ship sweet potatoes to many of the European and Asiatic countries where this crop cannot be profitably grown on account of difierence in soil or climatic con ditions. The present great drawback to the more ex tensive production Of sweet potatoes is its highly perishable nature, both in the field and in storage. It has been estimated by the Plant Disease Survey of the United States Department of Agriculture that in 1917 the loss from the more important sweet potato diseases was per cent Of the total crop, or a net waste Of bushels. In the foregoing estimate the losses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
