Book The Sustainability of Sheep Production in Mozambique

Download or read book The Sustainability of Sheep Production in Mozambique written by Chitsenga Simon and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability can be viewed as the reproductive performance of a system over time. It strongly advocates for the effectively and efficiently use of given resources wisely thereby enhancing that opportunities may be equal for all future generations and the present. With sustainability, it's the driving hub on which any agricultural activity should hinge on. In Mozambique, sheep production by smallholder farmers faces numerous challenges. Many farmers got government assistance to start up sheep production way back in 1986. There has not efficient and effective support from the government especially the department of Animal Husbandry. Many farmers involved in this enterprise experience less meaningful gain from sheep breeding. Lack of support and poorly staffed government ministry of agriculture continue to affect the sustainable production of sheep by smallholder farmers in the northern part of Mozambique, There are very few non-governmental organizations in the area. According to Dumanski (1997:5), agriculture remains the hub of economic growth and poverty alleviation in most of the developing countries.

Book excerpt: In this volume, the latest information on sheep farming concerning the effects of climate change is summarized in eight chapters. Climate change basically determines changes in the environment, which affect the keeping, feeding, animal health, and breeding conditions of sheep. These changes affect the sustainability of sheep farming, the sheep’s resilience, and based on this, the livelihood opportunities of the people who keep the sheep. In different regions, the factors that enable or limit the effectiveness of sheep farming can change to a different degree and form. Changes in circumstances make it increasingly important to utilize the elements of precision farming in sheep farming because knowledge of current registration, production, and location data is essential even in extensive conditions.

Book Manual of Sheep Production in the Humid Tropics of Africa

Download or read book Manual of Sheep Production in the Humid Tropics of Africa written by J. Charray and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1992 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Projects for the development of small ruminant production, particularly sheep production, are now underway in many countries in tropical Africa. While this trend is occurring in all climatic zones, it is especially so in the humid and subhumid tropics, where disease and social and psychological factors may be major impediments to the development of cattle or pig production. There is therefore a growing need for information on sheep production in tropical regions.

Book Sheep Production Adapting to Climate Change

Download or read book Sheep Production Adapting to Climate Change written by Veerasamy Sejian and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a compilation of the latest findings from reputed researchers around the globe, covering in detail climate change and its effects on sheep production. In the current global climate change scenario, information related to its impact on livestock agriculture is lacking. The negative impacts of climate change are already being felt by all livestock species. Further, the mitigation and amelioration strategies that are applicable for one species may not hold true for another. As such, concerted research efforts are needed to identify species-specific strategies for mitigation and adaptation. With that goal in mind, this book is the first of its kind to gather comprehensive information pertaining to the impact of climate change on various aspects of sheep production. It also sheds light on the role of sheep with regard to the global greenhouse gas pool. The book highlights the status quo of sheep production from climate change perspectives and projects the significance of adapting future sheep production to the challenges posed by climate change. It addresses in detail the various adaptations, methane mitigation and amelioration strategies needed to sustain sheep production in the future. In addition, the book presents development plans and policies that will allow the sheep industry to cope with current climate changes and strategies that will lessen future impacts. Bringing together essential information prepared by world-class researchers hailing from different agro-ecological zones, this book offers a unique resource for all researchers, teachers and students associated with sustaining the sheep production in the face of global change.

Book IFAD Research Series 88

Download or read book IFAD Research Series 88 written by Nancy McCarthy and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper incorporates climate variables, including rainfall conditions and patterns, into an impact assessment of the Value Chain Development Project in the Maputo and Limpopo Corridors (PROSUL) in Mozambique. It focuses on activities targeting improved pasture management, supplemental feed sources and livestock value chain development. Results show weather and climate conditions significantly impact households' adoption of project activities and livestock productivity outcomes. Project beneficiaries in drought-prone areas are more likely to provide supplemental feed in the dry season, though livestock birth rates are still lower in those areas.

Book Sustainable Intensification

Download or read book Sustainable Intensification written by Jules N. Pretty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continued population growth, rapidly changing consumption patterns and the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation are driving limited resources of food, energy, water and materials towards critical thresholds worldwide. These pressures are likely to be substantial across Africa, where countries will have to find innovative ways to boost crop and livestock production to avoid becoming more reliant on imports and food aid. Sustainable agricultural intensification - producing more output from the same area of land while reducing the negative environmental impacts - represents a solution for millions of African farmers. This volume presents the lessons learned from 40 sustainable agricultural intensification programmes in 20 countries across Africa, commissioned as part of the UK Government's Foresight project. Through detailed case studies, the authors of each chapter examine how to develop productive and sustainable agricultural systems and how to scale up these systems to reach many more millions of people in the future. Themes covered include crop improvements, agroforestry and soil conservation, conservation agriculture, integrated pest management, horticulture, livestock and fodder crops, aquaculture, and novel policies and partnerships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ex-Libris. Usual Library Markings With No Underlining And Highlighting. Sheep Have Traditionally Formed An Important Part Of The Economy In Much Of The Tropics And Sub-Tropics, But It Is Only In Recent Years That Scientists Have Begun To Recognize Their True Value, Not Only For Their Ability To Convert Low Quality Vegetation Into Tangible Products Such As Meat, Wool, Milk, Skin, And Manure, But Also As A Capital Store In Societies Where Grazing Land Is Communally Owned And Banking Facilities Are Few And Unreliable. With The Increasing Awareness Of The Importance Of The Sheep, Development Projects Aimed At Improving The Standard Of Living Of The Rural Poor Are Now Focusing On Sheep Because, Unlike Larger Ruminants, Sheep Are Owned By The Poorer Sectors Of These Societies. Until Now There Has Been A Marked Gap In The Literature For A Textbook On Tropical Sheep Production For Agriculture And Veterinary Students. This Book Fills That Gap, Providing An Introduction To Breeds Of Sheep In The Tropics, Their Genetics And Environmental Physiology And Covering Such Important Topics As Management, Health, Nutrition, Feeding And Reproduction; Products And Systems Of Production; Products And Systems Of Production; Sociological And Economic Aspects Of Production; And Possible Improvements.
