It has been his endeavour to give the documents as he found them, and he has only deviated from this rule in a few cases where the error has manifestly originated in the care lessness Of the scribe. The Editor may, perhaps, be blamed by some for making the notes, which illustrate the present volume, too genealogical. He has done this advisedly. It is not the Object Of the Society to republish matter which has already seen the light, and the Editor is confident that almost all the points which seem to require illustration are satisfactorily explained in works which are within the reach Of every antiquary. In the present volume the notes are, in many cases, supplementary to the text itself, as they contain curious details and information, which, although undeserving of a more prominent position, could not be entirely omitted. The Society is deeply indebted to the kindness Of the Rev. L. G. Harcourt, the registrar Of York, and to his deputies, Messrs. Hudson and Buckle, for permit ting the publication Of the present volume. The Editor also, individually, has great pleasure in acknow ledging the courtesy which he has experienced at the hands of Mess.
