Book excerpt: We have acquired near-IR H and optical $g$, $r$, $i$, $z$ imaging for a sample of 299 Virgo cluster galaxies down to a limiting magnitude of B$_T$=16.0 mag. The low sensitivity of near-IR wavelengths to dust extinction is crucial for an unbiased geometric deprojection of fundamental galaxy parameters. We find, in agreement with Tully and Verheijen (1997), a clear dichotomy between high and low surface brightness galaxy disks. The difference between the low and high brightness peaks of Virgo galaxies is $\sim$2 H-mag arcsec$^{-2}$, significantly larger than any systematic errors. The high surface brightness galaxies have two distinct classes of bulge with high and low concentration, while low surface brightness galaxies have only low concentration bulges. The distribution of the effective surface brightnesses of our entire sample shows that early-type galaxies exhibit a similar structural bimodality though offset from that of spiral galaxies towards higher surface brightnesses. We find that the structural bimodality is uncorrelated with colour or any other structural parameter except, perhaps, the circular velocity. Simulations of realistic surface brightness profiles show that a bimodality in effective surface brightness is unexpected based on normal distributions of fundamental bulge and disk parameters. Rather, the structural bimodality is likely linked to the galaxy dynamics, namely the specific angular momentum of the galaxy; high surface brightness galaxies have low angular momentum and can collapse to form dynamically important disks, while low surface brightness galaxies are dominated by the dark halo everywhere. Finally, our bulge-disk decompositions of all the sample galaxy images using various fitting functions have revealed that galaxies of all morphologies, including flattened and spheroidal systems, exhibit a ``disk'' component which is best described by a generalized ``Sersic'' function. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute "Cosmological Aspects of X-Ray Clus ters of Galaxies" took place in Vel en , Westphalia, Germany, from June 6 to June 18, 1993. It addressed the fruitful union of two topics, cosmology and X-ray clus ters, both of which carry substantial scientific weight at the beginning of the last decenium of the last century in the second millenium of our era. The so far largest X-ray "All-Sky Survey", observed by the ROSAT X-ray satel lite, and ROSAT's deep pointed observations, have considerably enlarged the base of X-ray astronomy, particularly concerning extragalactic sources. Cosmology has gained significant impetus from the large optical direct and spectroscopic surveys, based on high quality 2-dimensional receivers at large telescopes and powerful scan ning devices, harvesting the full information 1 content from the older technique of employing photographic plates. Radioastronomy and IR-astronomy with IRAS, as well as r-astronomy with GRO, continue and strengthen the role of extragalactic research. The rapidly growing computer power in data reduction and data storage facilities support the evolution towards large-number statistics. A most significant push was given to early cosmology by the needs of physics in trying to unravel the nature of forces which govern our material world. The topic of the ASI was chosen because it opens new vistas on this for ever new problem: the universe. Clusters of galaxies probe large-scale matter distributions and the structure of space-time.

In the same spirit, it can forcefully be argued that galaxies are the crossroads of astronomy. Internal pro ces ses within galaxies involve all of the fundamental components of astrophysics: stellar evolution, star formation, low-density astrophysics, dynamics, hydrodynamics, and high-energy astrophysics. Indeed, one can hardly name an observational datum in any wavelength range on any kind of celestial object that does not provide a useful clue to galaxy formation and evolution. Although internal processes in galaxies until recently occupied most of our attention, we now know that it is also vital to relate galaxies to their environment. How galaxies congregate in larger structures and are in turn influenced by them are crucial questions for galactic evolution. On a grander level we have also come to regard galaxies as the basic building blocks of the universe, the basic units whereby the large scale structure of the universe is apprehended and quantified. On a grander level still, we also believe strongly that galaxies are the direct descendents of early density irregularities in the Big Bang. Galaxy properties are now viewed as providing a crucial constraint on the physics of the Big Bang and a vital link between the macroscopic and microscopic structure of the universe.

Morphological thought and action are likely to be of value in all human activities, once such thought and action have been clearly delineated and fully developed, and once they have been practised by a sufficiently large number of people. Since the morphological method is of the greatest universality, the choice of the field to which one applies it first is not particulary critical. The author intends to write two or three books on the morphology of several large scale problems, which are both of a technical and of a general social nature. The present book is concerned in particular with some implications of morphological thinking in astronomy. We shall above all emphasize the basic character of the morphological approach, and we shall demonstrate its constructive power in a number of specific cases.
