It makes no pretence to exhaust the field which it undertakes to survey; indeed, I hope that its publication may serve to stimulate additional research, not only in the drama of countries not here dealt with, but in other departments of literary activity. I trust, however, that the principles here enunciated are sufficiently well grounded to be a useful basis for such investigation. I desire to make a general acknowledgement of thanks to all the members of the Division of Modem Languages at Harvard whom I had occasion to consult in the course of the work, for helpful criticisms and suggestions; to Professor H. While there has been no previous book on the topic, and none related to it, save Mr. C. E. Whitmore's work on The Supernatural in Tragedy, the mass of fiction itself introducing ghostly or psychic motifs is simply enormous. It is manifestly impossible to discuss, or even to mention, all of it. Even in my bibliography which numbers over three thousand titles, I have made no effort to list all the available examples of the type. The bibliography, which I at first intended to publish in connection with this volume, is far too voluminous to be included here, so will probably be brought out later by itself. It would have been impossible for me to prosecute the research work or to write the book save for the assistance generously given by many persons We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. This is the general usage in the First Folio. The im portant contractions in the First Folio which may indicate Elizabethan pronunciation i' th for 'in the, ' for example) are also followed. Modern spelling has to a certain extent been adopted in the text variants; but the original spelling has been retained wherever its peculiarities have been the basis for important textual criticism and emendation. With the exception of the position of the textual vari ants, the plan of this edition is similar to that of the old Hudson Shakespeare.
