He bore it to the hermitage, and laid it on his own bed. Whilst searching for some salve for the wounds, he heard a human. Voice come from the bed. He looked, and saw, instead Of the wolf, a beautiful damsel, with wounds on the head and hand. She told him that she had been sent by her father, who was a wizard, to roam about the country in the shape of a wolf; and it was evident that the holiness of the hermitage had restored her to human shape. She is cured by the young man, and, a mutual attachment arising, they agree to marry. Before the wedding-day they stroll to look at the place where they originally met. They incautiously cross the frontier. They are at once surrounded by sprites and witches, and she is snatched away from him for ever. He pines away, and dies, and is buried at his own request at the spot where he met the white wolf. After his death the howling Of a wolf, mingled with the wailing of a woman, was Often heard at the grave. Men and women have frequently the power in romance of becoming were wolves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Supernatural in Romantic Fiction I have for several reasons abstained from mentioning the productions of living poets and poetical writers, but have otherwise attempted to make my work as complete as it was in my power to make it. I have used the word romantic in opposition to classical, and possibly have made the word unduly comprehensive by treating of all supernatural fiction, except that of ancient Greece and Rome; and even that I have occasionally noticed for the sake of comparison. Book The Rise of Supernatural Fiction 1762 1800

Download or read book The Rise of Supernatural Fiction 1762 1800 written by E. J. Clery and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-02-16 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A genre of supernatural fiction was among the more improbable products of the Age of Enlightenment. This book charts the troubled entry of the supernatural into fiction, and questions the historical reasons for its growing popularity in the late eighteenth century. Beginning with the notorious case of the Cock Lane ghost, a performing poltergeist who became a major attraction in London in 1762, and with Garrick's spellbinding and paradigmatic performance as the ghost-seeing Hamlet, it moves on to look at the Gothic novels of Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe, M. G. Lewis, and others, in unexpected new lights. The central thesis concerns the connection between fictions of the supernatural and the growth of consumerism: not only are ghost stories successful commodities in the rapidly commercialising book market, they are also considered here as reflections on the disruptive effects of this socio-economic transformation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wind in the Rose-Bush: And Other Stories of the Supernatural She was tall and spare and pale, the type of a spinster, yet with rudimentary lines and expressions of matronhood. She all unconsciously held her shawl, rolled up in a canvas bag, on her left hip, as if it had been a child. She wore a settled frown of dissent at life, but it was the frown of a mother who regarded life as a froward child, rather than as an overwhelming fate. Book excerpt: “What to read after A Court of Thorns and Roses! Full of twists you’ll never see coming!” –UppercaseYA I’ve never been a stranger to the darkness. But when darkness comes knocking and looks that good, who wouldn’t invite him in? Draven is mysterious, evasive, and hot as sin. The only thing more infuriating than his silence is how obnoxious he is every time he does open his mouth. But when a group of strangers attacks me and he fights back—causing them to vanish into a cloud of black dust—I know Draven is more than he seems. Now I know the truth. There’s a veil separating the world I know from a world of demons living all around us. Turns out, good and evil are just words. Some of the demons don’t fall into either category. And I’m realizing just how easily I fit in among the ancient warlocks, the divine soldiers, and the twisted supernaturals... There’s so much more to me and my past that I don’t know—let alone what I am truly capable of. So when all signs point to me having the ability to unleash Hell on earth? I’ll have to decide if I want to do the world a solid and save it...or give it one hell of a makeover. The Ember of Night series is best enjoyed in order. Book The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction

Download or read book The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction written by Dorothy Scarborough and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction by Dorothy Scarborough Ph.D. (Author) PREFACE THE subject of the supernatural in modern English fiction has been found difficult to deal with because of its wealth of material. While there has been no previous book on the topic, and none related to it, save Mr. C. E. Whitmore's work on The Supernatural in Tragedy, the mass of fiction itself introducing ghostly or psychic motifs is simply enormous. It is manifestly impossible to discuss, or even to mention, all of it. Even in my bibliography which numbers over three thousand titles, I have made no effort to list all the available examples of the type. The bibliography, which I at first intended to publish in connection with this volume, is far too voluminous to be included here, so will probably be brought out later by itself. It would have been impossible for me to prosecute the research work or to write the book save for the assistance generously given by many persons We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Written by Sir H. Rider Haggard, Beatice is very different to what we would expect. The author of such adventure novels as King Solomon's Mines and Allen Quartermain Haggard is famous for his captivating action and supernatural twists, but steps away from such stereotype in this romance while proving that his talents are not restricted to any single style. Beatrice follows the story of the Welsh title character Beatrice Granger, a teacher, and the affair that takes place with an unhappily married man in the form of barrister Geoffrey Bingham. Trouble is the third wheel in this relationship as Geoffrey's morally dubious wife along with various love triangles are determined to interfere with the happy couple. While, as has been stated, not necessarily a book for Rider Haggard's usual fans, Beatrice nevertheless delivers in terms of sheer enjoyment to, if not the same scale, then almost so much as his more famous works.
