Book Nanoscience and Engineering in Superconductivity

Download or read book Nanoscience and Engineering in Superconductivity written by Victor Moshchalkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-10 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For emerging energy saving technologies superconducting materials with superior performance are needed. Such materials can be developed by manipulating the "elementary building blocks" through nanostructuring. For superconductivity the "elementary blocks" are Cooper pair and fluxon (vortex). This book presents new ways how to modify superconductivity and vortex matter through nanostructuring and the use of nanoscale magnetic templates. The basic nano-effects, vortex and vortex-antivortex patterns, vortex dynamics, Josephson phenomena, critical currents, and interplay between superconductivity and ferromagnetism at the nanoscale are discussed. Potential applications of nanostructured superconductors are also presented in the book.

  • Author : N. Bontemps
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9401109745
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book The Vortex State written by N. Bontemps and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most spectacular consequences of the description of the superfluid condensate in superfluid He or in superconductors as a single macroscopic quantum state is the quantization of circulation, resulting in quantized vortex lines. This book draws no distinction between superfluid He3 and He4 and superconductors. The reader will find the essential introductory chapters and the most recent theoretical and experimental progress in our understanding of the vortex state in both superconductors and superfluids, from lectures given by leading experts in the field, both experimentalists and theoreticians, who gathered in Cargèse for a NATO ASI. The peculiar features related to short coherence lengths, 2D geometry, high temperatures, disorder, and pinning are thoroughly discussed.

Book Tunneling Phenomena in Solids

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elias Burstein
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1468417525
  • Pages : 574 pages

Download or read book Tunneling Phenomena in Solids written by Elias Burstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this volume is to provide advanced predoctoral students and young postdoctoral physicists with an opportunity to study the concepts of tunneling phenomena in solids and the theoretical and experimental techniques for their investigation. The contributions are primarily tutorial in nature, covering theoretical and experimental aspects of electron tunnel ing in semiconductors, metals, and superconductors, and atomic tunneling in solids. The work is based upon the lectures delivered at the Advanced Study Institute on "Tunneling Phenomena in Solids," held at the Danish A. E. C. Research Establishment, Riso, Denmark, June 19-30, 1967. Sponsored by the Danish Atomic Energy Commission, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (NORDITA), and the Science Affairs Division of NATO, with the cooperation of the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark, Chalmers Institute of Technology, and the University of Penn sylvania, the lectures were presented by a distinguished panel of scientists who have made major contributions in the field. The relatively large number of lecturers was, in part, made possible by the close coordination of the Advanced Study Institute with the Second International Conference on Electron Tunneling in Solids, which was held at Riso on June 29, 30 and July 1, 1967, under the sponsorship of the U. S. Army Research Office Durham. We are indebted to I. Giaever, E. O. Kane, J. Rowell, and J. R. Schrieffer for advice and assistance in planning the lecture program of the Institute.

Book Introduction to Topological Quantum Computation

Download or read book Introduction to Topological Quantum Computation written by Jiannis K. Pachos and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-12 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining physics, mathematics and computer science, topological quantum computation is a rapidly expanding research area focused on the exploration of quantum evolutions that are immune to errors. In this book, the author presents a variety of different topics developed together for the first time, forming an excellent introduction to topological quantum computation. The makings of anyonic systems, their properties and their computational power are presented in a pedagogical way. Relevant calculations are fully explained, and numerous worked examples and exercises support and aid understanding. Special emphasis is given to the motivation and physical intuition behind every mathematical concept. Demystifying difficult topics by using accessible language, this book has broad appeal and is ideal for graduate students and researchers from various disciplines who want to get into this new and exciting research field.

Book Basic Physics of Functionalized Graphite

Download or read book Basic Physics of Functionalized Graphite written by Pablo D. Esquinazi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the basic physics of graphite and newly discovered phenomena in this material. The book contains the knowledge needed to understand novel properties of functionalized graphite demonstrating the occurrence of remarkable phenomena in disordered graphite and graphite-based heterostructures. It also discusses applications of thin graphitic samples in future electronics. Graphite consists of a stack of nearly decoupled two-dimensional graphene planes. Because of the low dimensionality and the presence of Dirac fermions, much of graphite physics resembles that of graphene. On the other hand, the multi-layered nature of the graphite structure together with structural and/or chemical disorder are responsible for phenomena that are not observed yet in graphene, such as ferromagnetic order and superconductivity. Each chapter was written by one or more experts in the field whose contributions were relevant in the (re)discovery of (un)known phenomena in graphite. The book is intended as reference for beginners and experts in the field, introducing them to many aspects of the new physics of graphite, with a fresh overview of recently found phenomena and the theoretical frames to understand them.

Book Novel Superfluids

    Book Details:
  • Author : Karl-Heinz Bennemann
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2014-11-27
  • ISBN : 0191029998
  • Pages : 657 pages

Download or read book Novel Superfluids written by Karl-Heinz Bennemann and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 of Novel Superfluids continues the presentation of recent results on superfluids, including novel metallic systems, superfluid liquids, and atomic/molecular gases of bosons and fermions, particularly when trapped in optical lattices. Since the discovery of superconductivity (Leyden, 1911), superfluid 4He (Moscow and Cambridge, 1937), superfluid 3He (Cornell, 1972), and observation of Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of a gas (Colorado and MIT, 1995), the phenomenon of superfluidity has remained one of the most important topics in physics. Again and again, novel superfluids yield surprising and interesting behaviors. The many classes of metallic superconductors, including the high temperature perovskite-based oxides, MgB2, organic systems, and Fe-based pnictides, continue to offer challenges. The technical applications grow steadily. What the temperature and field limits are remains illusive. Atomic nuclei, neutron stars and the Universe itself all involve various aspects of superfluidity, and the lessons learned have had a broad impact on physics as a whole.
