Book Articulate Images

Download or read book Articulate Images written by Richard Wendorf and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1983-10-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Articulate Images was first published in 1983. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Twenty-five years ago, Jean Hagstrum published a pioneering study, The Sister Arts, showing how the visual arts influenced the imagination of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English poets. Hagstrum's book suggested the intimate (and sometimes troubled) relationship between poetry and painting, and, more than any other on the subject, provided a basis for subsequent development and refinement within this field of comparative studies. The nine original essays in Articulate Images address the central issues Hagstrum raised; they serve as an introduction to current approaches to the sister arts. Fully illustrated, Articulate Images will be enjoyed by readers entering the field as well as by seasoned votaries of the sister arts.

Book Images of Crisis Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Images of Crisis Routledge Revivals written by George P. Landow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, Images of Crisis explores the premise that literature and art exploit various images to present culturally prevalent ideas, and thus create their own form of iconology. George Landow shows how the tumultuous history of the past two hundred years has resulted in a plethora of metaphors associated with moments of human crisis. Avalanches and volcanoes emerge as focal images in an aesthetic that concerns itself increasingly with the vulnerability of humanity. However, it is in the transformation of traditional religious images that the ideas of the vacant universe are most dramatically presented. Associated with this central idea are ironic transformations of other images that formerly had been associated with Christianity as paradigms of belief: the journey of Odysseus, the rainbow of the Covenant and Robinson Crusoe. Combining close textual analysis with a theory of literary iconology, this fascinating reissue will be of particular value to students with an interest in literary images, and literary and cultural history.

Book excerpt: In a last, desperate bid to stave off defeat, Japan's High Command launched the terrifying kamikaze attacks. This fully illustrated book examines Imperial Japan's last throw of the dice. Fully illustrated throughout, Desperate Sunset examines the development and evolution of the kamikaze using first-hand accounts, combat reports, and archived histories. By the middle of 1944, Imperial Japan's armed forces were in an increasingly desperate situation. Its elite air corps had been wiped out over the Solomons in 1942-43, and its navy was a shadow of the force that had attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. But the Japanese had one last, desperate, card to play. The Japanese High Command decided that the way to inflict maximum damage on the superior enemy forces was to get the poorly trained Japanese pilots to crash their explosive-laden aircraft onto their target, essentially turning themselves into a guided missile. The kamikazes announced themselves in the immediate aftermath of the Leyte Gulf naval battles, sinking the USS St. Lo and damaging several other ships. The zenith of the kamikaze came in the battle of Okinawa, which included ten kikusui (Floating Chrysanthemum) operations that involved up to several hundred aircraft attacking the US fleet.

Book excerpt: Lee Harrison Stewart, seaman apprentice and seaman, USN-EV, served on the USS Hoquiam (PF-5) as a radioman during the first two years of the Korean "Conflict" (later labeled a "war.") In this third book in his series on the USS Hoquiam PF-5, he brings the experiences of young sailor in the 1950s to life. The Hoquiam, after being recommissioned in Yokosuka, Japan, sailed in harm's way off the east coast of North Korea. It participated in all the east coast landings and the Hungnam evacuation. This story begins where Road to Hungnam ended-back in Yokosuka on New Year's Eve, 1950, for a few weeks of pier-side overhaul, as the crew winds down from Hungnam. There is hard work preparing the ship for a new assignment to Task Force Ninety-Five off Wonsan, North Korea. Still, there's time for romance and hijinks on liberty in Yokosuka and later in Sasebo, Japan. The Hoquiam's crew sees a full range of work in the next assignment period-including work they detest with the Service Force, firing remote-controlled target aircraft for other ships to shoot at, days spent on submarine patrol (when they doubled as targets for the North Korean or Chinese gunners in Wonsan caves), convoy escort duty, and the best assignment of all-shooting at the potbellied narrow-gauge trains coming down from Mongolia. Eventually, the crew of the Hoquiam again sails for Yokosuka and prepares for yet another trip to the Korean bomb line.

Book Aesthetic and Critical Theory of John Ruskin

Download or read book Aesthetic and Critical Theory of John Ruskin written by George P. Landow and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the sources and development of Ruskin's aesthetic and critical theories. In his attempt to skirt the danger of excessive emotion and association in art, Ruskin's struggle with the sublime but not the picturesque, is, along with the pathetic fallacy, examined. These concepts, too, are considered in light of Ruskin's continuing religious and intellectual development. Finally, Ruskin's loss of faith is analyzed in relation to the problem of allegory in art. Ruskin argued for an unchanging standard of beauty, though the psychological nature of the artist is related to his art medium. Originally published in 1971. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
