Book excerpt: Before Raffles, before Rajah Brooke, there was Francis Light, the 18th-century trailblazer in the Malay Archipelago. The 18th-century Straits of Malacca is in crisis, beleaguered by the Dutch, the Bugis, and the clash between Siam and Burma. Enter Francis Light, devious manipulator of the status quo, joined by a cast of real historical figures from the courts of Siam and Kedah and from the East India Company, including Sultan Muhammed Jiwa, King Tak Sin, Warren Hastings and Martinha Rozells, a young Eurasian woman of noble birth. From humble origins in Suffolk, England, Light struggles against the social prejudices of his day. His subsequent adventures as a naval officer and country ship captain take him from India to Sumatra, the Straits of Malacca to Siam, through shipwreck, sea battles, pirate raids and tropical disease. But Light’s most difficult challenge is his ultimate dream: to establish a British port in the Indies on behalf of the East India Company. Dragon, the first volume of Penang Chronicles, charts Francis Light’s colourful adventures in the decades before the settlement of Penang island, the Honourable Company’s first possession on the Malay Peninsula.

Download or read book Balkan Wars written by James D. Tracy and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinguished scholar James D. Tracy shows how the Ottoman advance across Europe stalled in the western Balkans, where three great powers confronted one another in three adjoining provinces: Habsburg Croatia, Ottoman Bosnia, and Venetian Dalmatia. Until about 1580, Bosnia was a platform for Ottoman expansion, and Croatia steadily lost territory, while Venice focused on protecting the Dalmatian harbors vital for its trade with the Ottoman east. But as Habsburg-Austrian elites coalesced behind military reforms, they stabilized Croatia’s frontier, while Bosnia shifted its attention to trade, and Habsburg raiders crossing Dalmatia heightened tensions with Venice. The period ended with a long inconclusive war between Habsburgs and Ottomans, and a brief inconclusive war between Austria and Venice. Based on rich primary research and a masterful synthesis of key studies, this book is the first English-language history of the early modern Western Balkans. More broadly, it brings out how the Ottomans and their European rivals conducted their wars in fundamentally different ways. A sultan’s commands were not negotiable, and Ottoman generals were held to a time-tested strategy for conquest. Habsburg sovereigns had to bargain with their elites, and it took elaborate processes of consultation to rally provincial estates behind common goals. In the end, government-by-consensus was able to withstand government-by-command.

Book Cuneyt Bey an Ottoman Character

Download or read book Cuneyt Bey an Ottoman Character written by Murat Yildirimoglu and published by Yıldırımoğlu Yayıncılık. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ottoman History is full of interesting characters but Cuneyt Bey may be one of the most interesting ones. Cüneyt Bey as he is known in Turkish, first emerges during the Ottoman Interregnum that followed the defeat of Bayezid I against Timur, during the time when sons of Bayezid I compete for the throne of their state. He ends up serving four of Bayezid’s Sons, in addition to his situational alliances with Byzantines and Anatolian Beyliks against them as well. At the first sign of trouble he changes sides. He is not a man of loyalty or honesty, and a far cry from an example to younger generations. Despite this, his story is filled with humanistic elements as well. One can hardly resist the temptation to imagine what one could have done in his place, if they were in his shoes. His end is at the same time both satisfying and slightly saddening.
