Download or read book The Sugar Industry on St Croix written by Karen C. Thurland and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, a Caribbean island, had a sugar industry that spanned from its earliest settlement years until the middle of the twentieth century. Sugar was the economic determinant that influenced the social and cultural fiber of the island. The Sugar Industry on St. Croix, a historical reader, concentrates primarily on the twentieth century when the sugar industry was on its decline and eventually terminated. The book has an historical overview that describes the economics of sugar cultivation, attempts at diversification of crops, the Virgin Islands Company, homesteading, the Virgin Islands Corporation, and the termination of the sugar industry on the island. The book also contains first-hand accounts from people who participated in the industry and recall their experiences in the planting and harvesting of sugar cane, working in the sugar factory or for the Virgin Islands Corporation, a view of the role of women in the industry, and the challenges of life in an agricultural community. The photographs provide a view of agricultural life, the gauge railways, homesteaders, and also of the people involved in sugar production.

Book Sugar Cane in St Croix Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sugar Cane in St Croix Classic Reprint written by Longfield Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sugar Cane in St. Croix Sugar cane has been grown for many years in St. Croix, where sugar making has ranked as a leading commercial industry From 1898 the area devoted to the cultivation of cane gradually diminished, and during the 10 years immediately preceding the World War very little planting of cane was done. However, the growing of cane was stimulated in St. Croix, as elsewhere, by economic conditions brought about by the war, and the area devoted to it at present covers approximately acres. The average amount of sugar exported yearly since 1898 has been tons from an area of about acres. This was at the rate of ton of sugar exported for each acre under culti vation. If the average amount of 270 tons locally consumed is added to this sum the yield per acre is shown to be actually 0. 666 ton. Book Flora of the Island of St Croix Classic Reprint

Download or read book Flora of the Island of St Croix Classic Reprint written by Charles Frederick Millspaugh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of the Island of St. Croix Most of the sugar is manufactured at the great central sugar factory, near Bassin, which is under government control. There are about 72 estates ranging in size from 150 to'2,165 acres. The origi nal number of estates was much larger, but in recent years they have been united; for example, Wheel of Fortune estate now includes the original estate together with those of Fredericks Haab, Stony Ground, Mar's Hill, Two Brothers, Hesselberg, and Smith's Field. Each estate has its own little village of stone huts, surrounding or near the estate house, where the people who are employed in the fields live with their families. Isolated dwellings are uncommon. For example: The estate of Big Princess is worked by 71 men and 62 women, most of whom live in its village with their families. This is a village of average size. There are required besides, for this same estate, 32 mules and 28 oxen. The total number of men thus employed on the island, in 1890, was or to every 100 acres; the total number of women was or to each 100 acres; the number of mules was or to each 100 acres; and the number of oxen was or for 100 acres. These figures do not include the owners, managers, overseers with their families, squatters, invalids, nor children under thirteen years of age. The amount of land leased to squatters is increasing year by year, show ing a tendency on the part of the natives to become independent. Besides the laborers employed on the estates, many work in the sugar factory and on the docks, others are engaged in fishing and hunting, while a large number live from hand to mouth. Download or read book Tradesmen of St Croix written by Karen C. Thurland and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, a Caribbean island, had a large number of black tradesmen who operated their own shops in its towns. These men passed on vital technical skills to their sons and apprentices, so those colonial crafts persisted during the Danish era. A few trades have continued for over a hundred years of American rule. Two of the tradesmen featured in this book, Peter G. Thurland Sr. and Alphonso Forbes, participated as musicians in the transfer ceremony of the Danish West Indies to the United States in the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, on March 31, 1917, while one tradesman, Carlos H. McGregor, observed the event. The tradesmen documented in this publication include a blacksmith, mason, shoemaker, tailor, two goldsmiths, and two joiners. They started out as young apprentices and went on to master a trade and operate their own workshop or business. These native black men contributed to the economic, social, and political life of St. Croix through periods of prosperity and financial hardships. These tradesmen were respected by people in the community and are a vital part of the island’s history and culture.

Book Slavery in the Circuit of Sugar Second Edition

Download or read book Slavery in the Circuit of Sugar Second Edition written by Dale W. Tomich and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces the historical development of slave labor and plantation agriculture in nineteenth-century Martinique. A classic text long out of print, Slavery in the Circuit of Sugar traces the historical development of slave labor and plantation agriculture in Martinique during the period immediately preceding slave emancipation in 1848. Interpreting these events against the broader background of the world-economy, Dale W. Tomich analyzes the importance of topics such as British hegemony in the nineteenth century, related developments of the French economy, and competition from European beet sugar producers. He shows how slaves’ adaptation—and resistance—to changing working conditions transformed the plantation labor regime and the very character of slavery itself. Based on archival sources in France and Martinique, Slavery in the Circuit of Sugar offers a vivid reconstruction of the complex and contradictory interrelations among the world market, the material processes of sugar production, and the social relations of slavery. In this second edition, Tomich includes a new introduction in which he offers an explicit discussion of the methodological and theoretical issues entailed in developing and extending the world-systems perspective and clarifies the importance of the approach for the study of particular histories.
