Download or read book The Sugar Hacienda of the Marqueses Del Valle written by Ward J. Barrett and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a detailed history of a Mexican sugar plantation. The subject of the study is the Cortés plantation, which was established on the outskirts of Cuernavaca in about 1535 by Hernán Cortés. Cortés or Cortéz (1485-1547) was the Spanish conquistador who overthrew the the Aztec empire (1519-1521) and won Mexico for Spain. In 1529 he was named Marqués del Valle de Oaxaca (Marquis of the Valley of Oaxaca). The Cortés mill was unusual in the continuity of ownership, since for nearly four centuries, from about 1535 until the 20th century, it remained in the hands of the heirs and descendants of the Conqueror of New Spain.

  • Author : Stuart B. Schwartz
  • Publisher : UNC Press Books

Download or read book Tropical Babylons written by Stuart B. Schwartz and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2011-01-20 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that sugar, plantations, slavery, and capitalism were all present at the birth of the Atlantic world has long dominated scholarly thinking. In nine original essays by a multinational group of top scholars, Tropical Babylons re-evaluates this so-called "sugar revolution." The most comprehensive comparative study to date of early Atlantic sugar economies, this collection presents a revisionist examination of the origins of society and economy in the Atlantic world. Focusing on areas colonized by Spain and Portugal (before the emergence of the Caribbean sugar colonies of England, France, and Holland), these essays show that despite reliance on common knowledge and technology, there were considerable variations in the way sugar was produced. With studies of Iberia, Madeira and the Canary Islands, Hispaniola, Cuba, Brazil, and Barbados, this volume demonstrates the similarities and differences between the plantation colonies, questions the very idea of a sugar revolution, and shows how the specific conditions in each colony influenced the way sugar was produced and the impact of that crop on the formation of "tropical Babylons--multiracial societies of great oppression. The paperback edition includes a new afterword by the author which discusses the results of recent research.

Book Historical Ecology and Archaeology in the Gal pagos Islands

Download or read book Historical Ecology and Archaeology in the Gal pagos Islands written by Peter W. Stahl and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Galápagos Islands are one of the world’s premiere nature attractions, home to unique ecosystems widely thought to be untouched and pristine. Historical Ecology and Archaeology in the Galápagos Islands reveals that the archipelago is not as isolated as many imagine, examining how centuries of human occupation have transformed its landscape. This book shows that the island chain has been a part of global networks since its discovery in 1535 and traces the changes caused by human colonization. Central to this history is the sugar plantation Hacienda El Progreso on San Cristóbal Island. Here, zooarchaeological and archaeobotanical evidence documents the introduction of exotic species and landscape transformations, and material evidence attests that inhabitants maintained connections to the outside world for consumer goods. Beyond illuminating the human history of the islands, the authors also look at the impact of visitors to Galápagos National Park today, raising questions about tourism’s role in biological conservation, preservation, and restoration. A volume in the series Society and Ecology in Island and Coastal Archaeology, edited by Victor D. Thompson
