This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the second of The Sufi Message of Hazrat Inayat Khan, an attempt has been made to group together most of the Sufi mystic's teaching concerning sound and music – sound as the basis of creation and music as an essential means towards spiritual development. Having been a musician of renown before he gave up his art in order to dedicate himself entirely to the Sufi Message with which he was entrusted, Inayat Khan readily followed the practice of the ancient Sufis in expressing esoteric truths in terms of sound and music. He once described this as follows: 'I gave up my music because I had received from it all that I had to receive. To serve God one must sacrifice what is dearest to one; and so I sacrificed my music. I had composed songs; I sang and played the vina; and practicing this music I arrived at a stage where I touched the Music of the Spheres. Then every soul became for me a musical note, and all life became music. Inspired by it I spoke to the people, and those who were attracted by my words listened to them, instead of listening to my songs. Now, if I do anything, it is to tune souls instead of instruments; to harmonize people instead of notes. If there is anything in my philosophy, it is the law of harmony: that one must put oneself in harmony with oneself and with others. I have found in every word a certain musical value, a melody in every thought, harmony in every feeling; and I have tried to interpret the same thing, with clear and simple words, to those who used to listen to my music. I played the vina until my heart turned into this very instrument; then I offered this instrument to the divine Musician, the only musician existing. Since then I have become His flute; and when He chooses, He plays His music. The people give me credit for this music, which in reality is not due to me but to the Musician who plays on His own instrument.'

Book The Sufi Message Volume 2

Download or read book The Sufi Message Volume 2 written by Hazrat Inayat Khan and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mysticism of Music, Sound and Word presents an essential part of the highly practical philosophy of Hazrat Inayat Khan. Born a musician, music and sound were for him the essence of life. Even when later he had to give up his practice of what in Indian philosophy is called struck music, the unstruck music remained with him, and increasingly so. Not only did he enjoy it in his meditations and all through life, whether in silent nature or in the roaring streets of Manhattan. In its fullness, it came out in his discourses and other presentations he made to the amazed and yet not fully understanding public of the West in the twenties. His realization of sound and music transformed his words into living beings, attuning the atmosphere, bringing inspiration to the public. This volume presents various aspects of his music. It contains four parts. In the Mysticism of Sound, the basic philosophy is given in a wide context. Both the abstract and some very practical aspects are covered. Music presents the mystic aspects of music besides relating its philosophy to the practical side again. It presents a beautiful early view of Indian music and it relates music and colour. Moreover, the psychic and healing powers are discussed. The Power of the Word and Cosmic Language elaborates these influences both philosophically and practically. The book really may be called mysticism in daily life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerson in Iran is the first full-length study of Persian influence in the work of the seminal American poet, philosopher, and translator, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Extending the current trend in transnational studies back to the figural origins of both the United States and Iran, Roger Sedarat's insightful comparative readings of Platonism and Sufi mysticism reveal how Emerson managed to reconcile through verse two countries so seemingly different in religion and philosophy. By tracking various rhetorical strategies through a close interrogation of Emerson's own writings on language and literary appropriation, Sedarat exposes the development of a latent but considerable translation theory in the American literary tradition. He further shows how generative Persian poetry becomes during Emerson's nineteenth century, and how such formative effects continue to influence contemporary American poetry and verse translation.

Book Undoing Whiteness in the Classroom

Download or read book Undoing Whiteness in the Classroom written by Virginia Lea and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the twenty-first century, government mandates and corporate practices are resulting in growing inequities in the U.S. educational field. Many view this as being driven by whiteness hegemony. Undoing Whiteness in the Classroom is a comprehensive effort to bring together, in one volume, educultural practices and teaching strategies that deconstruct whiteness hegemony, empower individuals to develop critical consciousness, and inspire them to engage in social justice activism. Through music, the visual and performing arts, narrative, and dialogue, educulturalism opens us up to becoming more aware of the oppressive cultural and institutional forces that make up whiteness hegemony. Educulturalism allows us to identify how whiteness hegemony functions to obscure the power, privilege, and practices of the dominant social elite, and reproduce inequities and inequalities within education and wider society.
