Book excerpt: The small-but-mighty shrimp has lured diners to the table for centuries. Whether served as the featured protein in a main dish or as a savory flavor in snacks, shrimp are the world’s most popular seafood. These primordial-looking creatures spend their short lives out of sight, deep on the ocean floor, yet they have inspired an immense passion in cultures across the world. In this lively and entertaining book, Yvette Florio Lane embarks on a lively historical tour of the production and consumption of Earth’s beloved crustacean. Over the centuries, shrimp have been hailed as an indulgence, a luxury, and even an aphrodisiac. They have been served to show hospitality, demonstrate status, and celebrate special occasions. They can also be culinary ambassadors, inspiring novel cooking techniques and the introduction of new tastes around the world. Demand for the creatures, however, has now exceeded supply. Whether fished from the ocean with nets or deep-sea trawlers, or raised in modern aquaculture farms, the world produces and eats more (and cheaper) shrimp than ever before, but often at great cost. Shrimp is a delicious, fascinating, and troubling history of a culinary favorite.

Book Change of Seasons

Download or read book Change of Seasons written by John Oates and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “One is struck . . . by how talented [Oates] was [and] how hard he worked at it. It took lots of effort to look that smooth to the tune of 80 million copies.” —Austin American-Statesman John Oates was born at the perfect time, paralleling the birth of rock ‘n roll. Raised in a small Pennsylvania town, he was exposed to folk, blues, soul, and R&B. Teaming up with Daryl Hall in the late 1960s, they developed a style of music that was uniquely their own. John uncovers the grit and struggle it took to secure a recording contract with the legendary Atlantic Records and chronicles the artistic twists and turns that resulted in a DJ discovering an obscure album track that would become their first hit record. This is not your typical rock and roll story. John was focused on creating great music. Along the way he achieved incredible success, battling the ever-changing pop music landscape and coming to terms with complex managerial, business, and personal challenges. Daryl Hall and John Oates have over 20 albums together, more than 60 million records sold, and 29 Top 40 hits. They are the most successful pop duo in the world and members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And yet John’s story has never been told. Relying on his many hand-written journals, he brings to light many fascinating stories spanning his entire life with a journalist’s eye and a poet’s heart. “Fascinating. . . . Highly recommended for fans of Hall & Oates.” —Library Journal “Plenty of entertaining anecdotes.” —Publishers Weekly “An exceedingly entertaining, somewhat rueful chronicle of his life. . . . Andy Warhol, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Quincy Jones, Miles Davis, and Edgar Winter all make appearances.” —Booklist, starred review

Book excerpt: DescriptionThis story is about the impracticality of the imagination, it's the story of Quentin, Art and Melody. Quentin is a well to do entrepreneur, Art is a dreamer & Melody is a really renown model. Quentin has made a wing with which he fly's over a huge expanse of South Africa. Art meets with Melody upon her arrival in East London, and comes in brief to fall for her beautiful charms. Melody is a working girl, she has the privilege of sailing by boat from Australia, to East London, where she meets Art and by a phenomenal working of chance, Quentin too. Between the lines is the tales beginning and end, the reality of my story. A strange brew of event and cerebral action. My tale of course meshed into theirs as they are of course sourced in the workings of my imagination. I am the addled Shizo-Affective one who dreams up this escape to cut myself free of the pain of this thing that has happened to me. To me, the imagination is the tool that is much underutilised, and in this tale, I have dreamt up the three fazes of recovery. Melody, someone to dream of and with, Art the creative side of endeavouring to be normal in life that is everything but normal, and Quentin, the dreamer, who takes the dream and works out of it a reality. There journeys and mine are the make up of "Odyssey." About the AuthorJonathan Swart, was born in 1975. He was born into the much evolving state of the empire, that was Rhodesia and Nyasaland.
