Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to show the successful use of percussion in the modern orchestra. With such men as Stravinsky, Bartók, and Rogers writing for the percussion has reached an artistic level in the orchestra comparable to that of the other members of the orchestral family of instruments. These composers, have, in my opinion, opened new doors in the discreet use of percussion, and thus, have greatly contributed to the ever-expanding orchestral timbre. I have presented their contributions through an analysis of the percussion writing in a major work of each (and also isolated examples from some of their other works); by showing how each has used percussion from the rhythmic, dynamic, and coloristic points of view, and how their usage has exemplified percussion as an intimate part of the modern composer's technique. Throughout the thesis, reference is made to the (R), (C), and (D) factors. This refers to passages which, generally speaking show a use of percussion for rhythm, coloration, or dynamics. The use of the word "successful" as applied here to the use of percussion by these composers, implies a certain culmination in the art of writing for the percussion as an integral part of' the orchestral sound. It does not imply that heretofore percussion has been habitually misused, or consigned to mere programmatic effects (for these men serve the program with percussion), but rather, that as in every art there are certain points of culmination in different areas of the art, at various phases of artistic thought. In other words I feel that these composers in their use of percussion are representative of the most sophisticated type of writing for that section yet achieved. Because of the subtle approach to the writing found in their work, it is necessary to dwell largely in the area of coloration. For this is the key to vitality in their usage of the percussion instruments -- their inherent ability to put the right timbre in precisely the right spot. An appended chart shows the frequency of usage of the color, rhythm, and dynamic factors with each. It is hoped that the chapter on notation problems and ranges will help clear up some of the mystery surrounding, the technical aide of writing for the percussion family as it stands today. Finally, the appended recording, which illustrates many of the percussion examples cited in the text, may prove to be an interesting aural adjunct.
