Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lippincott's: Farm Manuals The Sheepman now realizes that the march towards the setting sun in search of new and cheap range is over, and that various phases of agriculture are demanding and receiving recognition In regions which he once regarded as solely his own. He also realizes that land values have advanced and the cost of. Operation increased to the point where the haphazard and wasteful methods once prae ticed in handling Sheep can no longer be depended upon to yield profits. All of these changes presage a better and more successful sheep husbandry, and this book is offered with the hope that it Will be of use both to the student and to the. Sheep raiser in comprehending the place which sheep justly deserve in our agriculture and the methods Of handling which will result in permanent occupancy of this place. The author fully realizes that this volume is not a complete treatise on sheep husbandry. He also realizes how unfortunate it would be for sheepmen generally to attempt to apply without any modification whatever all of the suggestions this book contains; for no absolute rule can be laid down for each and every practice in flock husbandry. Book The Handy Book of Husbandry

Download or read book The Handy Book of Husbandry written by George E. Waring and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Handy-Book of Husbandry: A Guide for Farmers, Young and Old I cannot claim such sublime originality for my present work; for while none of the operations of the farm are unfamiliar to me, and While I pro fess to be, by education and experience, a practical farmer, I have tried to tell in its pages not only what I have learned over my work, - which, in the case of any individual, is woefully little, - but also what I have gained from the recorded experience of other farmers, who have been accumulating, little by little for years and more, the precious sap of wisdom with which our tree of knowledge is fed. I have endeavored, too, to look beyond the farmer who has done so much for the unfolding of the riches that Nature, our universal mother, showers upon her industrious sons, and to question, as well, those devoted friends of the farmer, the chemist and the student, who ask from Nature something more than her material gifts, who seek the very cunning of her deft handicraft, who - not satisfied with the fact that she rolls up her bounty from seed-time until harvest - ask how her work is done; how the seed sprou'ts, the leaf shoots, the blossom unfolds, the fruit ripens how re newed life and vigor spring from death and decay; how fields are exhausted, and how made fertile; how crops are increased, and kine are grown; how from only air and earth and water such a marvel as man is made to live and move. I trust that my experience as a farmer has enabled me to separate, with tolerable completeness, the chaff from the wheat, or at least to select from the teachings of others (whether in the field or in the study, ) the infor mation that the farmer, as a farmer, will be most benefited by gaining. I have endeavored to forego all theorizing, and to state the leading facts of the art and of the science of farming as plainly and clearly as I could, so that any man who can read at all, and who has ordinary intelligence, may find my statements as free as possible from hard words, and that he may feel, as he goes along, that it is a brother farmer who is talking to him, and that what he is saying both his reason and his experience lead him to believe worth the telling. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stock-Feeder's Manual: The Chemistry of Food in Relation to the Breeding and Feeding of Live Stock When Virgil composed his immortal Bucolics, and Varro indited his profound Essays on Agriculture, the inhabitants of the British Islands were almost completely ignorant of the art of cultivating the soil. The rude spoils torn from the carcasses of savage animals protected the bodies of their hardly less savage victors; and the produce of the chase served almost exclusively to nourish the hardy frames of the ancient Celtic hunters. In early ages wild beasts abounded in the numerous and extensive forests of Britain and Ireland; but men were few, for the conditions under which the maintenance of a dense population is possible did not then exist. As civilisation pro gressed, men rapidly multiplied, and the demand for food in creased. The pursuit of game became merely the pastime of the rich; and tame sheep and oxen furnished meat to the lowly as well as to the great. N or were the fruits of the earth neglected for during the latter days of the dominion of the Romans, England raised large quantities of corn. Gradually the food of the people, which at first was almost purely animal, became chicfly vegetable. The shepherds, who had supplanted the hunters, became less numerous than the tillers of land; and the era of tillage husbandry began. Book Feeds and Feeding

Download or read book Feeds and Feeding written by W. A. Henry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Feeds and Feeding: A Hand-Book for the Student and Stockman Feeds and Feeding, first published in March, 1898, was received with immediate and widespread favor by practical stockmen, as well as by the professors and students of animal husbandry in our agricultural colleges and secondary schools. The plan of the book had been laid along original lines, and neither time, labor, nor expense was spared in its preparation. In 1910, after nine editions had come from the press, the book was entirely rewritten and improved in many ways. Again in 1915 the book was completely rewritten and improved in many ways. Again in 1915 the book was completely rewritten and enlarged to include the recent information, both scientific and practical. To this revision Professor Morrison, who had assisted thruout the first revision and who now became joint author, devoted much time, with a corps of trained assistants, during a period of over two years. The favour with which this second revision was received exhausted two large editions in less than two years and nine printings of the last edition have been required in rapid sucession. During the past few years exceedingly important discoveries have been made concerning the science and practice of live stock feeding. Furthermore, economic conditions have radically changed. Therefore, Professor Morrison has again entirely rewritten the book to include the latest information and to adapt it to changed economic conditions since the World War. Just as in the previous revision, the results of many important investigations, completed so recently as not yet to be in print, have been furnished by scientists thruout the country, in order that the findings might be presented in this revision. It is the aim to give Feeds and Feeding an unbiased and condensed presentation of the most important findings of the investigators of both the Old and New Worlds in the science of animal nutrition, together with the most important results of the vast number of feeding trials which have been conducted at the experiment stations in the United States and other countries, the whole being rounded out by the practical experiences of many of the leading stockmen of America. The authors have not relied merely on a thoro study of the published information on nutrition and stock feeding, but have gained personal contact with conditions in various districts by extensive travel. Part I presents briefly the fundamental principles of animal nutrition, including the most recent discoveries of the scientists. The bearing of these principles upon the practical feeding of live stock is given especial emphasis. Particular attention is given to the newer discoveries in nutrition, including the functions and importance of vitamins and mineral matter, as well as the differences in the quality of food proteins from various sources. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peter Henderson and Co's. American Farmers Manual, 1900 For green fodder and the silo. Of Japanese Millet several pieces, of an acre or more each, were sown for feeding green or for the silo. The earliest, sown broadcast about the middle of May on rich land, one peck of seed to the acre, averaged about six feet in height, and produced over 15 tons per acre. This was cut from day to day, beginning before the millet had blossomed. Another field of about an acre, sown the last of June, yielded at the rate of rather over 18 tons per acre. Another field, sown July 26th, after a cr0p of hay was removed, yielded about 12 tons per acre. The crop of the two last fields was put into the silo. That cut from day to day, and fed to cows, was much relished. Its superiority to well-eared flint corn fodder was very apparent. Cows with both before them always take the millet first: they consume it without waste, while they are apt to leave a art of the stalks of the corn as it approaches maturity. In alternating this ccd with corn fodder, the cows invariably increased in milk when put upon the millet, and fell off when changed to corn. It has been ensiled with soja beans, - about two parts by weight of the millet and one of the beans. This combination makes very superior silage. Book Beginnings in Animal Husbandry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Beginnings in Animal Husbandry Classic Reprint written by Charles S. Plumb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings in Animal Husbandry Agricultural education under these conditions lagged, and how to encourage interest became a serious problem with the colleges. Educators insisted that the teaching should be largely based on pure science, and it was Often difficult for the students to see the application. Recognizing this lack Of interest, a few Western colleges conceived the plan Of giving short winter courses of a popular nature, in which practical laboratory instruction should be given. Work in dairying, horticulture, and live stock judg ing first received attention. This practical training was most favorably regarded by the students. These winter courses grew rapidly in popularity, and paved the way for more attractive forms of instruction for the regular students. Through this medium of the short winter Course, both interest and attendance in the agricultural colleges rapidly grew. New courses of study were established, more buildings and equipment were required, and then agricultural education sprang into popularity. The production of new types of text books, on subjects heretofore undiscussed in pedagogical form, logically followed in this evolution in agricultural edu cation. During this movement in behalf Of rural uplift, a few progressive men urged the importance of agricultural educa tion in the country schools of higher grade. This resulted in establishing agricultural schools Of secondary grade in different parts of the United States, both North and South. During the past few years, country life has become popular. As a result, there is a widespread movement in behalf of agricultural education, and the subject is now being taught in its various phases in many schools all over the land. Recognizing the need of an elementary text book for young people, the author has seen fit to prepare this volume on animal husbandry, the first of its kind devoted to this special field. It is his earnest hope that such lessons as either teacher or pupil shall find within these pages, may result in a desire for yet wider knowledge of and a more sympathetic interest in our farm animals.
