Book The Assassination of the Prime Minister

Download or read book The Assassination of the Prime Minister written by David C Hanrahan and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only once in history has a British Prime Minister been assassinated. At 5.00 p.m. on Monday, 11 May 1812, John Bellingham made his way to the Houses of Parliament carrying concealed weapons. At 5.15 p.m., as the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon. Spencer Perceval, was making his way across the lobby leading to the House of Commons, Bellingham shot him dead at point-blank range. Bellingham was immediately arrested and put on trial two days later: refusing to plead insanity, he was convicted and hanged before the week was out. Bellingham was neither a revolutionary nor a religious fanatic, but a successful young entrepreneur. What had driven him to commit such a heinous crime? In a story of suspense, revenge and personal tragedy, David C. Hanrahan tells the interwoven stories of Perceval and Bellingham, detailing not just the events of May 1812, but also the two men's histories, and what led one to take the other's life.

Book Why Spencer Perceval Had to Die

Download or read book Why Spencer Perceval Had to Die written by Andro Linklater and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-05-09 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 11 May 1812 Spencer Perceval, the British Prime Minister, was fatally shot at close range in the lobby of the House of Commons. In the confused aftermath, his assailant, John Bellingham, made no effort to escape. A week later, before his motives could be examined, he was tried and hanged. Here, for the first time, the historian Andro Linklater looks past the conventional image of Bellingham as a 'deranged businessman' and portrays him as an individual, driven by personal anxieties and by the raw emotions that convulsed his home town of Liverpool. But as the evidence accumulates, a wider, darker picture emerges - John Bellignham was not alone in hating the prime minister. Two hundred years later, Andro Linklater examines the ecidence and brilliantly deconstructs the assassination of Spencer Perceval - the only British Prime Minister ever to have suffered that fate - to offer a fresh perspective on Britain and the Western world at a critical moment in history.

Book The Substance of a Conversation With John Bellingham the Assassin of the Late Right Hon Spencer Perceval

Download or read book The Substance of a Conversation With John Bellingham the Assassin of the Late Right Hon Spencer Perceval written by Daniel Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Substance of a Conversation With John Bellingham, the Assassin of the Late Right Hon. Spencer Perceval: On Sunday, May 17, 1812, the Day Previous to His Execution The Conversation contained in the following pages is submitted to the Public at the request of several Friends of the Author, who conceived that, in addition to the interest with which any circumstances calculated to throw light on so dreadful a character might be received, some real benefit might, by the blessing of God, result from the publication. With the design of promoting still further such beneficial effect, he has ventured to offer some observations on what appears to him to have been the progress of sin in the criminals mind, as well as to suggest some remarks of a practical nature, on the whole of the extraordinary and melancholy case. The interview took place at the suggestion of a distinguished Member of Parliament, a friend of the late deeply lamented Chancellor of the Exchequer, who, having condescended to visit the Prisoner on the morning of that day, on a purely benevolent purpose, inquired of him whether a conference with the Author (who was at the time entirely ignorant of the communication) would be agreeable to him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium brings together thirty-three murderous tales — one from each of the capital’s boroughs — that not only shocked the City but made headline news across the country.Throughout its history the great urban sprawl of Greater London has been home to some of the most shocking murders in England, many of which have made legal history. Contained within the pages of this book are the stories behind these heinous crimes. They include George Chapman, who was hanged in 1903 for poisoning three women, and whom is widely suspected of having been the notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper; lovers Edith Thompson and Frederick Bywaters, executed for stabbing to death Thompson’s husband Percy in 1922; and Donald Hume, who was found not guilty of the murder of wealthy businessman Stanley Setty in 1949, but later confessed to killing him, chopping up his body and disposing of it by aeroplane. Linda Stratmann also reveals previously unpublished information that sheds a whole new light on the infamous Craig and Bentley case. This carefully researched, well-illustrated and enthralling text will appeal to those interested in the history of Greater London’s history and true-crime fans alike.
