Book Revisiting Kathmandu Valley s Public Realm

Download or read book Revisiting Kathmandu Valley s Public Realm written by Rajjan Chitrakar and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary urban development of Kathmandu Valley, the major urban centre of Nepal, has largely failed to deliver positive outcomes, with direct consequences on its public realm. While the problem demands effective management of urban growth and change, there is also a need to expand scholarly dialogues on the impact of urbanization on public space quality. This book responses to this need and aims to instigate a new debate on contemporary issues of public realm by engaging readers with the challenges of the ongoing transformation and management of public spaces. The book consists of six chapters written on a range of topics, covering both the traditional and contemporary public spaces. Chapter One reviews public realm in the traditional towns of the Kathmandu Valley and reinforces our current understanding of the provision and use of historic urban squares. Chapter Two takes the study on the historic urban squares into a new level by examining these public spaces in relation to contemporary city identity in the context of urban change. The third chapter examines the current transformation of historic riverfronts in the Kathmandu Valley, outlining the physical features and the cultural and religious activities taking place in the riverfronts from the perpective of the cultural landscape theory. Chapter Four is an analytical wrap up on the changing nature of the public spaces in the urban fringe of a historic town. Chapter Five presents the case study of a major civic space in Kathmandu, which is currently in dispute due to encroachment and has become a matter of serious concern among local architects and planners. The final chapter examines how Guthi as a traditional institutional setup for civic governance may be reconsidered to devise a new model for public space governance at present.

Book Exploring the Possibility of Mass Transit in the Urban Core of Kathmandu Valley Nepal

Download or read book Exploring the Possibility of Mass Transit in the Urban Core of Kathmandu Valley Nepal written by Gaurav S. Thapa and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal and its surrounding urban agglomeration accounts for approximately one twelfth of the entire population of Nepal and continues to grow at an annual rate of 5.2 percent. The growth rate per year for the decade between 2001 and 2011 has been a staggering 63.7 percent. This rapid unplanned population growth has resulted in significant problems such as congestion, environmental pollution and severe traffic gridlock. This study evaluates the possibility of installing a Mass Transit (MT) system in Kathmandu Valley by examining the installation and implementation of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in other parts of the world. Using census data and GIS I specify centroids (point of origin for a trip) within the 35 wards of he city and then use population as a surrogate for potential trips to be made. With the additional use of the Gravity Model I identify the flows between centroids and the destinations of trips. The study augments the results from the Gravity Model by using satellite and aerial imagery. Aerial image interpretation helps us understand the condition of the current road and shelter infrastructure at these specific sites. Based on the results from the gravity model and additional information from other Asian cities, where travel surveys have been accomplished, a two trunk system going north-south and east-west is proposed. In conclusion the study shows where the bus system should be placed maximize the number of riders and have the greatest potential for shifting riders from private modes of transport to public mass transit.

Book Urban Growth and Spatial Transition in Nepal

Download or read book Urban Growth and Spatial Transition in Nepal written by Elisa Muzzini and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nepal: Urban Growth and Spatial Transition carries out an initial assessment of Nepal's urban growth and spatial transformation, with a focus on spatial demographic and economic trends, economic growth drivers and infrastructure requirements of Nepal's urban regions. The book notes that Nepal is the fastest urbanizing country in South Asia. The spatial transformation is characterized by fast growing population density in the Kathmandu Valley - Nepal's largest urban conurbation -, along the main highways and close to the border with India, and clustering of economic production in the Kathmandu Valley and in the Eastern and Western Tarai. Yet, urbanization has been less correlated with economic growth in Nepal than in other countries in South Asia. In spite of its remarkable progress in alleviating poverty, Nepal is caught up in a cycle of political instability and economic stagnation, with economic growth below 4 percent per annum over the last decade. Urban areas have distinct comparative advantage in cultural tourism services, crafts, and agro-processing, but they have not been able to turn them into competitive advantages. Lack of effective planning, and inadequate infrastructure are a major constraint for urban growth and competitiveness. Nepal needs to foster the sustainable growth of its urban regions, promote the development and regeneration of the Kathmandu Valley Metropolitan Region and enhance the competitiveness of strategic urban clusters - first and foremost tourism, agro-processing and handicraft - to unlock urban-based growth and ensure the sustainability of the spatial transformation. The study aims to stimulate evidence-based policy dialogue on Nepal's urban transition, and assist those working in the critical area for Nepal's economic development – the Government, the private sector, civil society and the development partners - in framing policies and interventions for addressing the challenges, and seizing the benefits of rapid urbanization.
