Book An Evaluation of the Frankfort Mandibular Plane Angle Bisector FMAB Wits Appraisal in the Assessment of Anteroposterior Jaw Relationships

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Frankfort Mandibular Plane Angle Bisector FMAB Wits Appraisal in the Assessment of Anteroposterior Jaw Relationships written by Natalie Andrea Swoboda and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accurate anteroposterior measurement of jaw relationships is essenti al in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to esta blish a new cephalometric Wits appraisal using a bisector of the mandibular plane angle, named the Frankfort Mandibular Plane Angle Bisector (FMAB). The FMAB was used to assess the sagittal jaw relationship in a sample of Class I individuals, and compare this measurement to the ANB angle and the Wits appraisal using the Maxillomandibular Bisector (MMB). The data were collected from pre-treatment (T0), immediate post-treatment (T1) and two year post-retention (T2) lateral cephalograms of 61 male and 60 female Class I subjects. Non-extraction, fixed orthodontic appliance treatment in the permanent dentition was carried out for these patients. Cephalometric data were compared to 19 male and 19 female Class I subjects who had no orthodontic treatment and served as controls. The FMAB was determined to be a reproducible reference plane which undergoes change in response to growth and treatment, consistent with the changes seen in the ANB angle. A good correlation (r>0.86) was found between the MMB and FMAB Wits appraisal measurements in both the control and treatment groups for all time periods, indicating that the use of either of these measures may be indicated in cephalometric analysis.

Book Functional Reconstruction of the Mandible

Download or read book Functional Reconstruction of the Mandible written by Roland Schmoker and published by Springer. This book was released on 1986 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1958 the Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (ASIF) has worked to establish the experimental and biomechanical prin ciples of the operative treatment of fractures. It has been proven that immediate, pain-free mobilization, made possible by stable internal fixation, is the key to restoring function in a fractured extremity. The same principles were applied in 1972173 by Roland Schmoker, who developed a universal plate and sophisticated instrument set designed initially for the treatment of comminuted fractures of the mandible. To extend the applications of his plate to reconstructions after ex tensive tumor resections, he supplemented the device with tem poromandibular joint prostheses and anchoring elements for the at tachment of dentures. He first tested the functional stability of these implants experimentally in sheep. Later he found that the minipig had a more human-like jaw shape and masticatory action, and so he tested the implants in 37 mini pigs that underwent extensive mandibular re sections without bone grafting, using sequential dye injections and postoperative weight gain to chart the progress of osseous regener ation. Seven other animals were not operated and served as controls.

Book An Evaluation of the Frankfort Mandibular Plane Angle Bisector FMAB Wits Appraisal in the Assessment of Anteroposterior Jaw Relationships in Class II Individuals

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Frankfort Mandibular Plane Angle Bisector FMAB Wits Appraisal in the Assessment of Anteroposterior Jaw Relationships in Class II Individuals written by Harbinder Singh Sangha and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The treatment of Class II malocclusions has long been a difficult and challenging task for orthodontists. It has been estimated that roughly one-third to one-half of clinical orthodontic practices consist of Class II malocclusions due to a dental discrepancy and/or a skeletal discrepancy between the maxilla and mandible. Thus, accurate diagnosis and treatment planning are of vital importance to practicing orthodontists. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Frankfort Mandibular Plane Angle Bisector (FMAB) reference plane in the assessment of anteroposterior discrepancies in a sample of Class II Division 1 individuals. Comparisons were made between the FMAB, ANB angle, and maxillo-mandibular Bisector (MMB) in both treated and control samples of Class II Division 1 patients. The data was collected from pre-treatment (T0), immediate post-treatment (T1) and two year post-retention (T2) lateral cephalograms of 40 female and 36 male Class II Division 1 subjects. Patients were treated non-extraction with fixed orthodontic appliances in conjunction with cervical or straight pull headgears and Class II elastics. Cephalometric data were compared to an untreated control group of 15 female and 15 male Class II Division 1 subjects. The data was evaluated using independent samples t-tests and ANOVA statistical tests to determine statistical differences between groups (p 0.05). The FMAB was determined to be a highly reproducible reference plane which mimics the ANB angle in the changes seen with growth and treatment. The FMAB-Wits had a mildly higher correlation with the ANB angle than the MMB-Wits. A good correlation (r 0.80) was found between the FMAB-Wits and MMB-Wits appraisal measurements in both the control and treatment groups for all time periods, indicating that the use of either of these measures may be indicated in cephalometric analysis.
