Book excerpt: Tadashi Kanzawa turned heads when he climbed the fence and starting walking towards the bulls. The owner himself had never dared because he knew if the bulls decided to attack he would never make it back in one piece, but Kanzawa was different, he knew something the others didn¿t. Approaching the buffalo Kanzawa raised his hand and slowly began waving it back and forth, an act people feared would startle the large instictual animals. However, one by one, the dangerous buffalo dropped to the ground and Kanzawa naturally walked out of the enclosure. This inexplainable feat wasn¿t new for Kanzawa. Besides being featured on the History Channel¿s Stan Lee¿s Super Humans, Tadashi Kanzawa has been demonstrating his abilities to audiences around the world. He has demonstrated on elephants, rhinos, tigers, lions, hippos, and many small animals also. At one point he was decorated a tribal shaman in Africa. However, every ¿supernatural¿ occurance with the animals actually served a greater purpose: fortifying an understanding of healing. Tadashi was healing these animals and instinctually removing their state of ¿fight or flight,¿ rendering them relaxed and sleepy. It is the innate healing capacity humans have forgotten that Tadashi Kanzawa is truley fascinated with and has spent his years understanding and refining. The Study of Kiryo documents Tadashi Kanzawa¿s understanding and methods for healing illness and injury in response to a modern world riddled with disease and illness.

Book Applications of Rasch Measurement in Learning Environments Research

Download or read book Applications of Rasch Measurement in Learning Environments Research written by Robert F. Cavanagh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-12 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major advances in creating linear measures in education and the social sciences, particularly in regard to Rasch measurement, have occurred in the past 15 years, along with major advances in computer power. These have been combined so that the Rasch Unidimensional Measurement Model (RUMM) and the WINSTEPS computer programs now do statistical calculations and produce graphical outputs with very fast switching times. These programs help researchers produce unidimensional, linear scales from which valid inferences can be made by calculating person measures and item difficulties on the same linear scale, with supporting evidence. These computer programs are now available to all Learning Environment researchers. This book includes 13 Learning Environment research papers using Rasch measurement applied at the forefront of education with an international flavour. The contents of the papers relate to: (1) high stakes numeracy testing in Western Australia; (2) early English literacy in New South Wales; (3) the Indonesian Scholastic Aptitude Test; (4) validity in Learning Environment investigations; (5) factors influencing the take-up of Physics in Singapore; (6) state-wide authentic assessment for Years 11-12; (7) talented and gifted student perceptions of the learning environment; (8) disorganisation in the classroom; (9) psychological services in learning environments; (10) English teaching assistant roles in Hong Kong; (11) learning Japanese as a second language; (12) engagement in classroom learning; and (13) early cognitive development in children. This book would be of interest to all educators and educational administrators, to Learning Environment researchers and PhD students, and should be available in all university libraries where the universities have education schools or faculties. –Russell Waugh-

Download or read book Shinkokinsh 2 vols written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 969 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shinkokinshū: A New Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern (ca. 1205) is supreme among the twenty-one anthologies of court poetry ordered by the Japanese emperors between the tenth and fifteenth centuries in terms of overall literary art, the high quality of the almost two thousand poems included, and the depth of poetic sentiment. Laurel Rasplica Rodd's complete translation allows the reader to appreciate the elaborate integration of the anthologized poems into a single whole by means of chronological procession or imagistic association from one poem to the next that was perfected in the Shinkokinshū by Retired Emperor Gotoba, himself a serious poet, and the courtiers he appointed as compilers, including Fujiwara no Teika, one of the greatest of Japanese poets.

Book Advanced Materials and Techniques for Structural Monitoring Analysis and Control

Download or read book Advanced Materials and Techniques for Structural Monitoring Analysis and Control written by Chun-Xu Qu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessing the service status and maintaining the safety of existing structures are critical to the sustainable operations of various engineering and cross-industry, including civil infrastructures, railways and machinery. Static and dynamic structural characteristics play a key role in the global deterioration assessment of the structural performance, which has enabled structural monitoring and analysis technology to become an active focus in the engineering area. Meanwhile, structural control has been widely used in modern structural engineering. Structural control devices are implemented to enhance deteriorating structures and mitigate natural disasters. Through advanced structural control technology, the structural responses can be controlled. These structural control techniques include passive, active or semi-active reverse forces, which aim to modify structural stiffness, mass and damping with minimal control force. Structural control, monitoring and analysis complement each other, ensuring the safety of the structure to the greatest extent.

Book The Perception of Work in Tokugawa Japan

Download or read book The Perception of Work in Tokugawa Japan written by Eiji Takemura and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of work in the Tokugawa period by intellectual historians has revealed the linguistic and ritual ways in which work was ideologically represented during that time. Work, however, is not an activity which belongs only to the realm of ideology; the actual 'form' of work is dictated by economic and technological factors. This study focuses on Ishida Baigan and Ninomiya Sontoku, who both acted as key channels through which ideology and economy were amalgamated, the meaning of work identified and intellectual expression given to it. Ishida and Ninomiya are often cited as role models used by the late-Meiji and prewar governments to impose self-sacrifice and blind submission onto the people, rather than as media for the social construction of work in the Tokugawa years. Few Japanese scholars specialising in Ishida and Ninomiya are familiar with the theoretical, empirical and anthropological studies of work developing in Western scholarship; attempts have yet to be made to approach the thought of Ishida and Ninomiya from such perspectives, and, as a result, their importance in the social construction of work in the Tokugawa era has not been fully acknowledged. Neither of the two thinkers advocated passive adaptation to a portional role in society, nor submission to a particular role given by a superior: Ishida argued for a worker's active participation in decision-making in business affairs and for skills to maintain efficiency in the implementation of collective tasks (inter-personal and managerial skills). Ninomiya advocated the management of time, technology and the labour force in pursuing agricultural work. Ishida spoke of work for the benefit of the long-term prosperity of the household; Ninomiya viewed work not only as the means to secure the material prosperity of an individual but as a 'cumulative agency' for the successive betterment of the household for generations to come. In contrast to the accepted view of them as thinkers exclusively in favour of submission and hard labour, they acted as intermediaries through which elements of management and long-term vision were incorporated into the concept of work.

Book Machine Learning from Weak Supervision

Download or read book Machine Learning from Weak Supervision written by Masashi Sugiyama and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental theory and practical algorithms of weakly supervised classification, emphasizing an approach based on empirical risk minimization. Standard machine learning techniques require large amounts of labeled data to work well. When we apply machine learning to problems in the physical world, however, it is extremely difficult to collect such quantities of labeled data. In this book Masashi Sugiyama, Han Bao, Takashi Ishida, Nan Lu, Tomoya Sakai and Gang Niu present theory and algorithms for weakly supervised learning, a paradigm of machine learning from weakly labeled data. Emphasizing an approach based on empirical risk minimization and drawing on state-of-the-art research in weakly supervised learning, the book provides both the fundamentals of the field and the advanced mathematical theories underlying them. It can be used as a reference for practitioners and researchers and in the classroom. The book first mathematically formulates classification problems, defines common notations, and reviews various algorithms for supervised binary and multiclass classification. It then explores problems of binary weakly supervised classification, including positive-unlabeled (PU) classification, positive-negative-unlabeled (PNU) classification, and unlabeled-unlabeled (UU) classification. It then turns to multiclass classification, discussing complementary-label (CL) classification and partial-label (PL) classification. Finally, the book addresses more advanced issues, including a family of correction methods to improve the generalization performance of weakly supervised learning and the problem of class-prior estimation.

Book The Politics of Reclusion

  • Author : Kendall H. Brown
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 1997-01-01

Download or read book The Politics of Reclusion written by Kendall H. Brown and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese themes of the Four Graybeards of Mt. Shang and the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove figure prominently in the art of Momoyama-period Japan (ca. 1575-1625). Kendall Brown proposes that the dense and multivalent implications of aesthetic reclusion central to these paintings made them appropriate for patrons of all classes - the military, who were presently in power, the aristocracy, who had lost power, and the Buddhist priesthood, who forsook power. These paintings, and their attendant messages, thus serve as dynamic cultural agents that elucidate the fundamental paradigms of early modern Japanese society. Unlike traditional art history studies, which emphasize the style and history of art objects, The Politics of Reclusion sets out to reconstruct the possible historical context for the interpretive reception and use of Chinese hermit themes within a specific period of Japanese art. In emphasizing the political dimension of aesthetic reclusion, it introduces into the field of Japanese art history a discussion of the politics of aesthetics that characterizes recent work in the field of Japanese literature. By embedding the paintings within the contexts of politics, philosophy, religion, and even gender, this study restores the reflexive relations between the paintings and their culture and, as such, is one of the first extensive intellectual and social histories of Japanese art in a Western language. It is one that will appeal not only to students of art but to those interested in Japanese literature, history, and philosophy.
