Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Electricity: A Text-Book of Electrical Engineering for Second Year Students His book is intended as a Text-book of Electrical Engineering for second year students. I define these as students who have already become acquainted with the elementary fundamental principles and laws of Magnetism and Electricity, and who have also a knowledge of the elements of Mechanics, Heat, and Mathematics. It may seem that I am assuming too much for the average student in a Technical Institute, but if he is to gain any really useful knowledge of this subject such preliminary training is absolutely essential. My experience teaches me that students are quite prepared to devote their first year to this preliminary work when the necessity for and the subsequent advantage of it are pointed out. Book Electrical Engineering

Download or read book Electrical Engineering written by Ernst Julius Berg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Engineering: First Course A text-book in electrical engineering emanating from Union College may be the occasion of some surprise to those who have been conversant with the development Of the electrical course in that institution. The authors have, it is true', recorded their Objections to the use Of a prescribed text. These Objections still hold good. In brief, they are, first, that a prescribed text tends to take the life out Of the class room, whether the course be con ducted by lectures or recitations, and second, that it tends to take the life out Of the study by relieving the student Of responsibility of continued effort. At Union College the fundamental aim is that the student Shall first comprehend, and then create. Comprehension comes through directed effort. This, the student acquires readily in the laboratory, but in the class room, it is not SO easy. The recitation falls short because it deals with the individual rather than the class. The lecture fails when the student knows he can fall back upon the text-book. The fault, however, is not with the text-book itself, but with the use that is made Of it. Obviously, then, its proper use is as a means Of directing the student's effort toward comprehension. Indeed, it Should com pel effort, not in order to make up for an author's failure to ex press himself clearly, but in order that the ideas Shall sink in and make permanent impressions on the mind. The book Should, therefore, be SO constructed and used that it shall be an additional aid to the student in creating his own expression Of the ideas with which he is brought into contact in the lecture, the recitation and the laboratory. It is desirable that fundamental ideas shall become fixed and clear in the student's mind as soon as possible, thus leaving him in a position to exert his full mental effort on that which is more advanced. Book The Power of Print in Modern China

Download or read book The Power of Print in Modern China written by Robert Culp and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid early twentieth-century China’s epochal shifts, a vital and prolific commercial publishing industry emerged. Recruiting late Qing literati, foreign-trained academics, and recent graduates of the modernized school system to work as authors and editors, publishers produced textbooks, reference books, book series, and reprints of classical texts in large quantities at a significant profit. Work for major publishers provided a living to many Chinese intellectuals and offered them a platform to transform Chinese cultural life. In The Power of Print in Modern China, Robert Culp explores the world of commercial publishing to offer a new perspective on modern China’s cultural transformations. Culp examines China’s largest and most influential publishing companies—Commercial Press, Zhonghua Book Company, and World Book Company—during the late Qing and Republican periods and into the early years of the People’s Republic. He reconstructs editors’ cultural activities and work lives as a lens onto the role of intellectuals in cultural change. Examining China’s distinct modes of industrial publishing, Culp explains the emergence of the modern Chinese intellectual through commercial and industrial processes rather than solely through political revolution and social movements. An original account of Chinese intellectual and cultural history as well as global book history, The Power of Print in Modern China illuminates the production of new forms of knowledge and culture in the twentieth century.
