Book The Student s Handbook of Surgical Operations

Download or read book The Student s Handbook of Surgical Operations written by Frederick Treves and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Handbook of Surgical Operations The present work is intended for the use of students who are preparing for the final examinations, or who need a hand-book to assist them in carrying out operations upon the dead body. The book is abridged from the author's large "Manual of Operative Surgery." That work aims at dealing in an exhaustive manner with the whole subject of operative surgery, or of treatment by operation. This hand-book concerns itself only with the most essential and most commonly performed operations. All matters save such as deal with the actual technical details of operative surgery have been omitted. I have not discussed the general principles of operative surgery, nor have I entered into a critical consideration of the value of various methods. I have assumed that the reader is familiar with the anatomy of the district concerned in each section, and I have omitted all accounts of the after-treatment. I have given no description of instruments and have left untouched the subjects of mortality and results. Book Surgical Anatomy for Students Classic Reprint

Download or read book Surgical Anatomy for Students Classic Reprint written by Arthur Marmaduke Sheild and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Anatomy for Students This work contains the substance of a series of demonstra tions, delivered by myself, to students in course of preparation for the final examinations. The book is intended for students to use with the living model. The study of Surgical Anatomy from illustrations alone is answerable for many of the rejections in this subject at the final examinations. N 0 picture or description will enable a student to instantly compress the. Subclavian artery, place his finger on a given prominence, or name a deeply seated tendon. These demonstrations have always been given upon the living subject, and I insist that students should actually feel and delineate the structures discussed. The allusions 'to operations and injuries are intended to give interest to the text. Knowledge of a surgical operation, to be of practical value, should be complete in every detail. The scope of a work of this nature, forbids that it should in any way be regarded, as a guide to the Operations of Surgery. Gastrotomy.--This operation may be rendered necessary in consequence of impermeable stricture of the oesophagus, to prevent the patient dying of starvation. There are three varieties of stricture--(1) The nervous or spasmodic--this form is usually intermittent, and if the patient can be induced to forget about it for the time being, the food passes quite easily; (2) Fibrous stricture, the result of swallowing corrosive fluids--this form may be dilated by passing bougies; (3) Cancerous--this is the most common form. The bougie seems to pass over a roughened surface, and its introduction is followed by the coughing up of blood, or blood and pus; the cervical glands will also probably be enlarged, and other signs of the "cancerous cachexia present." By these means it may be diagnosed from fibrous stricture, and this will also be assisted by the history of the case. Book Handbook of Surgical Anatomy

Download or read book Handbook of Surgical Anatomy written by George Arthur Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Surgical Anatomy Our idea in this small book was to bring together in convenient form, certain anatomical facts, and directly suggest for each a surgical association. There is of course nothing original in such a book, which is meant to give juniors a selection of some of the more important points in surgical anatomy. As all anatomy is in a sense surgical and medical too, a selection has necessarily to be made. Dental anatomy has received fuller treatment than is usual in books of this size, because in Manchester, medical and dental students receive much of their instruction together, and it is thought that so much dental knowledge as is here presented cannot but be useful to medical practitioners. Those students, who will read the larger books, will wisely study Treves, and refer to Deaver, and will, we hope, read and read again that best of all books on "applied anatomy," Hilton's Rest and Pain. We desire to fully acknowledge our indebtedness to various authors, and our own special obligations to H. H. Broome, now of His Majesty's I.M.S., and formerly senior demonstrator of Anatomy at the Owens College, for going through and checking our statements of anatomical facts. To our Publishers also, we owe our thanks. If the book is any help to the students of the Manchester School of Medicine it will have done all we want.
