It includes a description of those diseases which are essentially gynecologic, and is thus isolated in a somewhat compact form in order that the student may not be confronted by _a too formidable array of facts in his collateral reading and in his preparation for his final examination in the subject. In order to accomplish this purpose certain encumbering details have been subordinated. Thus, in the description of each disease, the underlying pathologic processes are enumerated. Microscopic detail, however, can better be learned from pictures than from tedious descriptions. For that reason' draw ings from microscopic sections illustrating the respective diseases are presented under each subject with full descriptive legends appended to them. In like manner the surgical principles involved in the treatment of the various dis eases are recounted, but the technic of the operations and the pictures illustrating their performance, matters of secondary interest to the student of the theory of gynecology, are reserved for a separate section. Part III is devoted exclusively to the technic of gynecologic surgery and is written for the assistance of the advanced student and practitioner. Surgical devices for the cure of gynecologic diseases are innumerable, and it is impossible to include them all in a book of this scope. Only those operations which from the personal experience or judgment of the author seem best suited for the special requirements are presented. In order to do this I have eliminated some portions of the text and introduced that which was newer and better. The changes, for the most part, have been confined to technics, as there have been few changes along other lines such as would be taken cognizance of in a work of this scope and character. Conspicuous among these innovations in technics is the operation of Goffe for extensive cystocele and that of Watkins for post-climacteric prolapse of the uterus. A number of new half-tone plates have been added to the illustrations, besides some cuts which have been substituted for others less desirable. For ready reference and as an aid to the student and busy practitioner, a regional index of symptoms has been appended to the body of the work. Most of the work of revision has been done by my son, Dr. E. M. Gilliain, Professor of Gynecology, Starling-Ohio Medical College. Expressing my appreciation of the kindly reception accorded to the first edition of this work, I can only hope that the present revised edition will meet with equal or greater favor.
