Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Guide to the Diseases of Women In the present edition I have added sections on the operations for repair of rupture perineum, and also on the operations for the cure of prolapse of the uterus and vagina, believing that it is possible to improve upon the mode of performing these operations, as described in most text-books of surgery. I have still, however, been unwilling to increase the size of the book by introducing an account of the operations for vesico-vaginal fistula, since practitioners in general are rarely called upon to perform this operation; and, moreover, it is described both in works on Surgery and in the larger works on Gynaecology. For a similar reason, I have still omitted those subjects, such as extra-uterine f tation, and retroversion of the pregnant uterus, which are to be found in text-books of Midwifery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Women: A Handbook for Physicians and Students Professor Winckel's treatise upon diseases of women was issued in Leipsic one year ago. Its author is recognized as one of the most eminent and able among European teachers of obstetrics and gynecology, and has been a most industrious contributor to the literature of these subjects, only one of his volumes, however, having, previous to the present, been translated into English - that upon the Pathology and Treatment of Childbed, the translator being Dr. James R. Chadwick, of Boston. Nevertheless, occasional articles from his pen have been published in American medical journals, so that, even independently of his larger works, his name is well known to the American profession, and to some the opportunity of personal acquaintance was afforded during his visit to this country last summer, such acquaintance impressing them with the fact that he was a man of far more than ordinary ability, attainments and force. The student of obstetrics and diseases of women cannot fail to recognize that many of the most valuable contributions to these subjects come from Germany; blot out the work done by German obstetricians and gynecologists in the last twenty, or in the last ten years, and the field of knowledge in these departments of medicine would be materially lessened, and some of the most important advances lost. It is not my purpose to inquire into the reasons for this condition, but observant physicians cannot fail to recognize the fact. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Women: A d104-Book for Students and Practitioners In preparing this volume I have endeavoured to keep constantly before me the following aims, namely: - 1. To give prominence to the scientific basis of each subject under consideration. For this purpose I have given the most careful attention to modern researches in sectional and dissectional anatomy, histology, embryology, comparative anatomy, pathology, and bacteriology, in so far as they bear on diseases of women, and have included the chief facts gathered by myself in original investigations carried on during the past nine years: 2. To study clinical features in their widest relationships, endeavouring to give to them their proper proportional values, and avoiding the faults of the school whose motto is Michelet's dogma, Le bassin c' est la femme, and whose work has led to the opprobrious denunciation, prevalent in so many quarters, of gynecological practice as a narrow and debased specialism: 3. To insist upon caution in the adoption of therapeutic measures not yet thoroughly tested, especially of many of those which, in these latter days, have been hurriedly and recklessly forced into publicity. The illustrations have been chosen with special reference to their teaching value, and have, for the most part, been made from original drawings by myself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Women: A Clinical Guide to Their Diagnosis and Treatment I have written this book because it seemed to me that a book was wanted which should guide the student and practitioner to the. Diagnosis and right treatment of the diseases of women. I have tried to present the different diseases which affect the organs peculiar to women in the way in which they appear in practice. I have not sought to quote everything that has been recommended, but to state principles, and in applying those principles to recom mend that which, having tried it, I know to be good. I may plead that I have one qualification for writing such a book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Diseases of Women I have written this book for the medical student. I have attempted to present the best teaching of modern gynecology, untrammelled by antiquated theories or methods of treatment. I have, in most instances, recom mended but one plan of treatment for each disease, hop ing in this way to avoid confusing the student or the physician who consults the book for practical guidance. I have, as a rule, omitted all facts of anatomy, phys iology, and pathology which may be found in the gen eral text-books upon these subjects. Such facts have been mentioned in detail only when it seemed important for the elucidation of the subject, or when there were certain points in the pathology that were peculiar to the diseases under consideration. I am indebted to Dr. H. D. Beyea for several pathological drawings, and to Dr. Wm. R. Nicholson for the preparation of the Index. Book A Treatise on the Diseases of Women

Download or read book A Treatise on the Diseases of Women written by Palmer Findley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 1040 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Diseases of Women: For Students and Practitioners This book is the natural outgrowth of the author's Diagnosis of Diseases of Women. Much that was contained in the former work has been revised, the subjects have been reclassified, and more than an equal amount of text and illustrations has been added for the purpose of making a complete text-book on the subject of diseases of women. It has been the endeavor of the author to present the subject in detail without encumbering the text with needless repetitions. With this object in View, separate chapters are devoted to the subjects of N on operative Methods of Treatment, Hygiene and Dress, Preparation of Patient for Operation, Preparation of Operating Room, Field of Operation and Surgical Utensils, Choice of Anesthetics, Diet, Post operative Complications and Care of Patients after Operation, and frequent references are made to these subjects throughout the text. An effort has been made to give full scope to the discussion of conservative methods of treatment, such as douches, baths, exercise, massage, diet, dress, and tampons. The author is of the opinion that the non-operative methods of treatment of diseases of women have not received their due share of consideration In text-books and in practice which they rightly deserve. The subject of diagnosis has been placed on an anatomical basis, both macroscopic and microscopic, for' it is preeminently true of diseases of women that the making of a diagnosis is in large part the recognition of the morbid anatomy.
