Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Flora of British Island The adoption of sub-species will, I hope, prove generally acceptable, though open to abundant criticism in details; indeed, in a good many cases this subdivision is almost purely arbitrary. In defining the sub species I have been much guided by the views held by British Botanists, and especially as expressed in the London Catalogue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Flora of British Island The object of this work is to supply students and field-botanists with a fuller account of the Flowering Plants and Vascular Cryptogams of the British Islands than the manuals hitherto in use aim at giving. For the plants regarded as composing the British Flora proper, I have mainly followed the London Catalogue of British Plants, 7th ed., 1874; being fully satisfied that I should thus best serve the interests of British Botany. The difficult task of determining which of the many doubtfully indigenous or naturalized plants should be regarded as British by adoption or otherwise has in the successive editions of this Catalogue been settled by the two botanists most competent to form an opinion by many years of research and by matured judgment - Messrs. H. C. Watson and J. Boswell. It is true, I may think that some of the Species they have introduced have less claims than some they have rejected, but this applies to very few cases indeed. The Ordinal, Generic, and Specific characters are to a great extent original, and drawn from living or dried specimens or both. After working them out, I have consulted the usual British and Continental Floras, and collated the descriptions throughout with Mr. Boswell's (an author usually quoted by his earlier name of Syme) edition of English Botany, of the descriptions in which work I cannot speak in terms of too high praise. Book The Cambridge British Flora Vol 2

Download or read book The Cambridge British Flora Vol 2 written by Charles Edward Moss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cambridge British Flora, Vol. 2: Salicaceae to Chenopodiacae, Text It is a truism to state that knowledge has no finality; but there is need to emphasise the fact that the knowledge of even a limited flora like that of the British Islands is not only now in a state of flux, but always must be, so long as botanists continue to investigate it. Discoveries are frequently made of plants which, though known to the botanists of other countries, have not previously been distinguished in the British Islands; and occasionally plants are found in these islands which have previously escaped observation altogether. The knowledge of the distribution of the members of the British flora is being constantly augmented, whilst, at the same time, it is being rendered more precise. The knowledge too of the nomenclature of British plants is constantly being increased; and unfortunately this knowledge sometimes necessitates the adoption of an unfamiliar name. We hope that this increased nomenclatorial knowledge will eventually result in a greater degree of stabilisation; but we regret to record our belief that finality in the names of plants is no more possible than finality in any other branch of knowledge. The work will be completed in about ten volumes of which the present (volume II) is the first to appear. This will be followed by Volume III: the order of appearance of the remaining volumes will be announced in due course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the British Flora: A Description of the Flowering Plants and Ferns Indigenous to or Naturalized in the British Isles, for the Use of Beginners and Amateurs When revising the fourth edition of my late friend's Hand book of the British Flora, I abstained from making other additions or alterations than appeared to me to be absolutely necessary, and consistent with the object of the work, which is, as stated in the title-page, for the use of beginners and amateurs. In the Preface to the first, 1858, but in no sub sequent edition, Mr. Bentham explained his motives for pre senting his work to the public, and the method he followed in preparing it: and inasmuch as he therein gives his reasons for adopting a different treatment of British plants from what obtains in other works devoted to our native Flora, it appears to me to be expedient, now that the editorship has passed into other hands, to repeat what he there says in his own words. Book The Story of Plant Life in the British Isles

Download or read book The Story of Plant Life in the British Isles written by Arthur Reginald Horwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Plant Life in the British Isles: Types of the Common Natural Orders Uring the last decade much headway has been made with the study of plants in their natural surroundings or their habitat. And a new science, ecology, has arisen, which bids fair to revivify the old systematic botany, which had fallen into such dis repute, by allying itself with that branch of botany and raising the study of plants from the systematic standpoint to a higher level. Considering the centuries that have been devoted to systematic botany or the study of the Characters of plants and their relationship to each other, it is indeed to us, in these enlightened days, marvellous that the life of the plant, which includes a study of its habitat, its manner of association and relation ship to the character of the surroundings, had not been considered at all in detail until quite recently. But it is now recognised that the physical surround ings play a great part in the shaping of species, apart from their diversity and the fact that these diversi ties are correlated with plant distribution and plant variation. If, indeed, we can determine the requisite surround ings of a plant we can more surely discover it. And as a great part of geographical botany is concerned with the discovery of the exact distribution of plants, it is highly valuable from this point of view alone. But this is not all, for we learn from the Character of the surroundings its requirements as regards light, heat, moisture, altitude, soil, etc., and the manner in which the plant occurs, either in small communities, large ones or otherwise, helps us to obtain a much broader and more intelligent view of the vegetation of a district, or its physiognomy on a large scale, which in turn reveals to us the bases of scenery and land scape. So that here the painter or the poet may join in the study of botany from a really vital stand point. In general plants are most largely affected by three factors, though there are others which are connected directly or indirectly with these three main factors.
