Book The Principles of Auditing

Download or read book The Principles of Auditing written by F. R. M. De Paula and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Auditing: A Practical Manual for Students and Practitioners The subject of auditing is so vast, that the standard works, of necessity, are somewhat lengthy and cumbersome books, and a considerable part of the matter contained therein is intended for practitioners only. This book has been written primarily for students, with the object of providing a book of convenient size, and at a reasonable cost, that will deal with all the general principles that govern every audit; and so form a stepping-stone to the larger works. I have endeavoured to cover the whole of the groundwork with which every student of auditing must be familiar and to explain the principles and reasons underlying each subject dealt with. On the other hand, owing to lack of space, I have omitted specialised subjects, such as the different classes of audits and investigations; for if all these were included, the whole book would have had to be condensed so considerably, that it would have been impossible adequately to discuss the important root principles that apply to every audit. For the same reason all the various Acts of Parliament to which auditors have at times to refer, have been omitted, but the sections of the Companies (Consolidation) Act, 1908, with which every auditor must be familiar, have been included. The appendix contains one hundred examination questions, which run in order with the text of the book, and it is thought that these will prove of value to students for the purpose of testing their knowledge with a view to preparing for examinations. Excerpt: ... but those dishonest would descend to such contemptible methods for drawing outside cash in, but it is done repeatedly, and the item cancelled just as soon as the audit is over. Another method is to have large quantities of goods ordered and included in the inventory and the invoices against them omitted from the liability. This is more often done than the former method. It is safe to say that if an auditor takes the receiving clerk's book, which is 0. K'd. by the proprietor, together with an assurance that all goods received are entered thereon, and that he is thoroughly convinced that all invoices are included in the statement of liabilities as shown by that stock book, then he could not be held responsible if some leak was discovered afterward, which no care on his part could discover, since it is no part of an auditor's duty to actually take the inventory himself. As this is the examination of a manufacturing business, we will assume, of course, that the above is for raw materials, and that it has been turned over to the manufacturing department. This opens up a new line of thought, because right here we come in contact with the two great constituent parts of manufacture, to PAY BOLL. 51 which all others are subservient even though absolutely necessary, viz., raw materials and labor. Assuming that we have reached the manufacturing point, our first study will be the pay roll. Ordinarily this will be investigated at the same time as the cash, seeing that it forms one of the principal items of expenditures, and is one of the most prolific in leaks and frauds. As a general rule the auditor has very little to guide him, because he knows absolutely nothing of the employees represented by the names on the books. These pay rolls and time...
