Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Student-Athlete Journey enlightens athletes to use their sport as a vehicle to achieve their goals - before, during, and after college. The book is centered around providing a framework for athletes and parents to not only navigate the world of college recruiting, but also, shed light on often overlooked topics. Broken down into three sections, readers first dive into what it takes to play college athletics, how to succeed once in college, and how to move on after college. In a market that is saturated with recruiting agencies, for profit club teams, and many other people without the student's best interests in mind, the focus of the Journey is to lend a fresh perspective. The book will cover the importance of academics, financial aid, relationships, and finding the best overall fit. The book is written by me, a former student-athlete who, at the age of 26, has navigated not only the recruiting process, but is in the midst of navigating the real world. From a small town in Colorado, I played basketball in prep school in New Hampshire, Division 1 in Portland, and Division 3 in California. I have applied to over 30 schools, spoken to over 50 coaches, and researched 100s of schools in my time. Now, after 4 years in the real world, I am back involved with sports working for adidas. In addition to the book, the website has a plethora of resources and touch points to give the readers more information. The website is thestudentathletejourney.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The game of football teaches lessons that are as applicable on the playing field as they are in the classroom, workplace, and in our relationships with those around us. In Heart of a Student Athlete, Karl Mecklenburg -- former all-pro captain of the Denver Broncos -- offers young athletes and their families inspirational advice about how to dream, achieve, and overcome obstacles on their way to success. Mecklenburg's candid, anecdotal counsel will motivate student athletes to aim high, work hard, and avoid the numerous challenges that they may face--including pressure to perform in the game, emphasis on sport over study, and the temptation of illegal drugs. In addition to sharing the incredible story of his unlikely rise from amateur athlete to Super Bowl Championship competitor, Mecklenburg outlines his template for success and reveals its six key components: teamwork, courage, honesty and forgiveness, desire, dedication, and goal setting. Accessible and brimming with enthusiasm, this book explains these keys and empowers athletes, parents, and coaches with the tools they need to achieve success and foster it in the young athletes in their lives.

Book College Athletes for Hire

Download or read book College Athletes for Hire written by Allen L. Sack and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-07-17 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have been written on the evils of commercialism in college sport, and the hypocrisy of payments to athletes from alumni and other sources outside the university. Almost no attention, however, has been given to the way that the National Collegiate Athletic Association has embraced professionalism through its athletic scholarship policy. Because of this gap in the historical record, the NCAA is often cast as an embattled defender of amateurism, rather than as the architect of a nationwide money-laundering scheme. Sack and Staurowsky show that the NCAA formally abandoned amateurism in the 1950s and passed rules in subsequent years that literally transformed scholarship athletes into university employees. In addition, by purposefully fashioning an amateur mythology to mask the reality of this employer-employee relationship, the NCAA has done a disservice to student-athletes and to higher education. A major subtheme is that women, such as those who created the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), opposed this hypocrisy, but lacked the power to sustain an alternative model. After tracing the evolution of college athletes into professional entertainers, and the harmful effects it has caused, the authors propose an alternative approach that places college sport on a firm educational foundation and defend the rights of both male and female college athletes. This is a provocative analysis for anyone interested in college sports in America and its subversion of traditional educational and amateur principles.

Book excerpt: This book is written for student athletes, their parents, mentors, families and supporters, for coaches, and Athletic Directors. It has ideas and insights for anyone who is trying to choose a college, or a career. It's for everyone interested in sports at the high school or college level -- but especially with those who parent, coach, or guide student athletes as they make some of the most important decisions of their lives. Behind every teen student athlete is an exhausted parent! The book is about the process of a high school athlete preparing to compete at the college level, written by someone who knows that journey very well. Over the years, I've discussed many aspects of this process, with other athletes and with teenagers, with their parents, coaches and Athletic Directors. Many people have found my insights helpful and have urged me to write a book. This is that book.Parents and coaches who read the book will have a catalyst for rich dialogue with their student athlete, about recognizing core values, setting priorities, and enhancing decision-making. Let me lay out two core values right here. The first is that you must believe in yourself; that's where this book starts because that's where success starts. Athletes, believe in yourselves. Parents, believe in your children, and in their ability to make good decisions about the college which best fits their needs.Second, always strive for excellence. Nothing is guaranteed to you but if you find a task or a sport which inherently interests you; if you work hard, stay focused, find good mentors and listen to them, you will vastly improve your chances of success. If your core values serve as a platform for developing good work habits, you'll get the most out of your abilities in sports and in life. That is all that anyone can ask of you, and all you should ever ask of yourself.
