Book excerpt: This is the untold story of the Studebaker 2 1/2 ton truck of WW2. Although the vehicle was well designed, handsome and an excellent performer by all accounts, few but the most diehard Studebaker enthusiasts know of this truck's significance in WW2, particularly as compared to the "original deuce" - the GMC CCKW. With nearly 200,000 US6's built, one might expect to see more of these attractive vehicles still around, whether earning their keep at a local farm or showing up at a car show. This book is the product of over 20 years of careful research that led the author, David Doyle, around the globe, ferreting out the story of one of the unsung heroes of WW2, the Studebaker US6. Over 600 high resolution pictures including many never before seen images from the Studebaker archives and private collections. Almost all of the photographs are either full page (8x10) or half page with captions. The printing is of the finest quality on glossy paper. Book Lend Lease and Soviet Aviation in the Second World War

Download or read book Lend Lease and Soviet Aviation in the Second World War written by Vladimir Kotelnikov and published by Helion. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventy years have passed since the Second World War yet the books and articles still keep coming in a never-ending stream discussing the question of what role the deliveries of arms and materials by Soviet allies played in the victory of the Red Army. In Russia, the American Bell P-39 Airacobra fighter along with the Studebaker US6 truck and canned stewed meat became the symbols of Allied help to the USSR during the Second World War. Other aircraft which arrived to the country under the Lend-Lease program are less known but also made a valuable contribution to the victory. The author of this book for the first time has assembled a huge volume of information related to the delivery of aviation equipment from the UK and USA. Based on documents from Russian and foreign archives, museums, and veterans' recollections, the author has made a qualitative and quantitative appraisal of the influence of these deliveries upon the Soviet war effort and airpower during the conflict. The book details the routes of the aircraft deliveries to Russia, the modifications which were done in order to suit the demands of the Russian climate and specifics of their front-line use, as well as the process of the new aircraft being mastered by the units of the Red Army Air Force. The first foreign aircraft arrived in the Soviet Union with No. 151 Wing RAF in 1941, and their use expanded rapidly - they took part in the counteroffensive near Moscow, the battles for Stalingrad and the Kursk salient, and operations of the war up to the battle for Berlin and the capitulation of Japanese forces in the North China. The author includes the results of the combat assessments of the aircraft, which were done at the Scientific Testing Institute of the Air Force, as well as reports from front-line regiments, and multiple combat episodes, detailing the views of the Soviet designers and pilots on the British and American aircraft. A separate chapter provides information about the aircraft which were not officially delivered but appeared in the Soviet Union accidentally. For the first time an attempt has been made to assess the influence of the deliveries of material and equipment upon the Soviet aviation industry and war effort. The author's impressive text is supported by nearly 700 color and b/w photographs, 100 color aircraft profiles, plus maps, charts etc.

Book Hoosieritis

Download or read book Hoosieritis written by Alden Studebaker and published by Author House. This book was released on 2009-05-31 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is everyone in Indiana afflicted with an incurable disease? Thats what author, Alden Studebaker, would have you believe in his book Hoosieritis: The Contagious Condition that is Indiana. A native son of Indiana, Studebaker takes the reader on an anecdotal, farcical journey through the Hoosier State pointing out the distinctive ways the enigmatic disease of Hoosieritis impacts the lives of Indiana residents. The book is often irreverent, poking fun at Hoosier institutions, traditions, and peculiarities by presenting selected nonsensical facts about Indianas culture, history, people, and values. Its intent is to provoke robust conversations among Hoosiers about their home state, and spawn fresh, new observations of the concocted contagion. The book features twenty-four photos depicting Hoosieritis.

Should be in the library of every Churchill aficionado” (American Spectator). We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender . . . Millions have been moved by these words—and by the hundreds of speeches given by Winston S. Churchill to rally the British public, spur its government to armament against Hitler, and defend the causes for which he believed. Churchill by Himself is the first collection of quotations from a leader who had as much talent for wit as he had for inspiration and exhortation. Edited by renowned Churchill scholar Richard Langsworth, this volume is the definitive collection of important quotes from one of the twentieth century’s most persuasive and brilliant orators, whose writings earned him a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953.

Book The Intricacies of Dicta and Dissent

Download or read book The Intricacies of Dicta and Dissent written by Neil Duxbury and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-12 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common-law judgments tend to be more than merely judgments, for judges often make pronouncements that they need not have made had they kept strictly to the task in hand. Why do they do this? The Intricacies of Dicta and Dissent examines two such types of pronouncement, obiter dicta and dissenting opinions, primarily as aspects of English case law. Neil Duxbury shows that both of these phenomena have complex histories, have been put to a variety of uses, and are not amenable to being straightforwardly categorized as secondary sources of law. This innovative and unusual study casts new light on – and will prompt lawyers to pose fresh questions about – the common law tradition and the nature of judicial decision-making.

Book excerpt: An illustrated study of the fearsome multiple rocket launchers which are forever associated with the Soviet Red Army and modern Russia's armed forces. Although military rockets have been used since the Middle Ages, it was not until the Soviet Union pioneered the concept of Multiple Rocket Launchers (MRLs) in the late 1930s that they emerged as a decisive weapon. In the modern era, these Soviet/Russian Katyushas have served in combat in Afghanistan, Chechnya, and Georgia. Developed to fill the operational need for massed artillery fire support, the MRL possesses enormous destructive power and a devastating psychological impact. Fully illustrated with photographs and artwork, this New Vanguard provides a survey of Soviet and Russian Federation MRLs from the beginning of their development in 1941 to the present. It focuses on the history, design, and specifications of self-propelled ground MRL systems, but also covers towed, static, railway, and naval mounts. It highlights the many variants of the principal systems and include MRL unit tables of organization and equipment, information on MRL munition types, and coverage of dedicated MRL resupply vehicles.
