Book excerpt: These two volumes collect thirty-eight selected papers from the scientific contributions presented at the Fourth European Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics (QSCP-IV), held in Marly-le-Roi (France) in April 22-27, 1999. A total of one hundred and fifteen scientists attended the workshop, 99 from Europe and 16 from the rest of the world. They discussed the state of the art, new trends, and future evolution of the methods and applications. The workshop was held in the old town of Marly-le-Roi, which lies to the West of Paris between the historic centres of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Versailles. Participants were housed at the National Youth Institute, where over sixty lectures were given by l- ding members of the scientific community; in addition, over sixty posters were presented in two very animated sessions. We are grateful to the oral speakers and to the poster p- senters for making the workshop such an stimulating experience. The social programme was also memorable – and not just for the closing banquet, which was held at the French Senate House. We are sure that participants will long remember their visit to the 'Musée des Antiquités Nationales': created by Napoleon III at the birthplace of Louis XIV, this museum boasts one of the world finest collections of archeological artifacts. Book excerpt: The field of X-ray spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation is growing so rapidly and expanding into such different research areas that it is now diffi cult to keep up with the literature. EXAFS and XANES are becoming interdis ciplinary methods used in solid-state physics, biology, and chemistry, and are making impressive contributions to these branches of science. The present book gives a panorama of the research activity in this field. It contains the papers presented at the International Conference on EXAFS and Near Edge Structure held in Frascati, Italy, September 13-17, 1982. This was the first international conference devoted to EXAFS spectroscopy (Extended X-ray Ab sorption Fine Structure) and its applications. The other topic of the con ference was the new XANES (X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure), which in of experimental and theoretical developments finally appears to have terms left its infancy. The applications of EXAFS concern the determination of local structures in complex systems; we have therefore divided the subject matter into differ ent parts on various types of materials: amorphous metals, glasses, solu tions, biological systems, catalysts, and special crystals such as mixed valence systems and ionic conductors. EXAFS provides unique information for each kind of system, but the analysis of EXAFS data also poses special prob lems in each case. General problems of EXAFS data analysis are discussed, as well as developments in instrumentation for X-ray absorption using syn chrotron radiation and laboratory EXAFS.

Book excerpt: This book deals with polypyrazolylborates (scorpionates), a class of ligands known since 1966, but becoming rapidly popular with inorganic, organometallic and coordination chemists since 1986, because of their versatility and user-friendliness. They can be readily modified sterically and electronically through appropriate substitution on the pyrazole ring and on boron, and have led to a number of firsts in coordination chemistry (first stable CuCO complex, first monomeric MgR complex, and many other such firsts). Their denticity can range from two to four, their “Bite” can be adjusted, and additional coordinating sites can be added to the pyrazolyl rings. Over 170 different scorpionate ligands are known today, and some are published for the first time in this book.The author, Swiatoslaw Trofimenko, discovered and developed this ligand system and has written several reviews on the subject. The book is intended as a reference work, placing at the researcher's command practically all of the over 1500 references on the subject up, and into 1999, organized both according to the ligand type and according to the metal or metalloid being coordinated. It acquaints the reader with the special features of this ligand system and permits an assessment of what has been done in a given sub-area, and of which areas remain relatively unexplored. It presents procedures for ligand synthesis, and also covers their use in catalysis and in the modelling of biologically active substances.
