Book Energy Structures and Environmental Futures

Download or read book Energy Structures and Environmental Futures written by Torleif Haugland and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history and prospects of the European energy sector for the last twenty-five and the next twenty-five years. The energy sector in Europe is faced with two challenges. On the one hand, economic integration and internationalization of markets, on the other the risks posedby climate change and the likelihood of further demands by consumers and governments to restructure the sector in line with a more environmentalist agenda. The authors' analysis is rooted in a careful examination of the factors that have shaped energy in Europa over the last twenty-five years, its regulatory systems, its corporate structure, and the role of energy and environmental policies. The book then examines how these might or might not betransformed in the light of intensified and accelerated economic and political integration in Europe or if the sector is faced with sustained pressure to restructure from the environmental lobby. The authors conclude that whatever major changes may be in the offing in the early twenty-first century, they will have to work through the structures of the twentieth century which are not going to yield easily either to economic internationalization or political environmentalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A well-written and extremely informative book about our energy industries, their significance to the economy, and how economists analyze the problems associated with energy production and consumption. The reader with only a cursory knowledge of economic principles, as well as trained economists, will learn much from Peirce's incisive and sometimes acerbic examination of the coal, oil, natural gas, electric utility, nuclear power, and the alternative energy industries. Choice review of First Edition Economics of the Energy Industries, Second Edition, examines the industry, in general, and its component industries (petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear, and alternative fuels). Dr. William Peirce blends technical and historical information about the component industries and analyzes the mixture with economic tools. The text provides the reader with a combination of the analytical concepts, the historical and institutional background necessary to understand the role of energy in modern economies, and the issues involved in public policy related to energy. Dr. Peirce incorporates environmental issues as well as the current status of industry regulation in his thorough and completely revised edition.

Download or read book Power Structure written by John E. Kwoka Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power Structure examines the effects on economic performance of several key features of the U.S. electric power industry. Paramount among these are public versus private ownership, vertical integration versus deintegration, and retail competition versus monopoly distribution. Each of these, as well as other structural characteristics of utilities and their markets, are analyzed for their effects on costs and price. These issues are important for a number of reasons. The U.S. electric power industry is presently embarking on a fundamental restructuring in terms of integration and competition. In other countries, privatization of state-owned enterprises is being viewed as the answer to unsatisfactory performance. From a longer perspective, the question of the relative performance of publicly owned versus privately owned utilities in the U.S. has never been resolved. And despite much speculation there is little reliable evidence as to the importance of either vertical integration or competition.
