Book Monetary Policy Interest Rate Rules and the Term Structure of Interest Rates

Download or read book Monetary Policy Interest Rate Rules and the Term Structure of Interest Rates written by Ralf Fendel and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest rate rules play an important role in the empirical analysis of monetary policy as well as in modern monetary theory. Besides giving a comprehensive insight into this line of research the study incorporates the term structure of interest rates into interest rate rules. This is performed analytically as well as empirically. In doing so, state of the art techniques of modern finance for the analysis of the term structure of interest rates are introduced into the macroeconomic concept of interest rate rules. The study implies that from the theoretical perspective term structure effects are an important extension of interest rate rules. From an empirical perspective it shows that including term structure effects in interest rate reaction functions improves our understanding of the interest rate setting of the Deutsche Bundesbank and the European Central Bank.

Book A Simple Account of the Behavior of Long term Interest Rates

Download or read book A Simple Account of the Behavior of Long term Interest Rates written by John Y. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent empirical research on the term structure of interest rates has shown that the long-term interest rate is well described by adistributed lag on short-term interest rates, but does not conform to the expectations theory of the term structure. It has been suggested that the long rate "overreacts" to the short rate. This paper presents aunified taxonomy of risk premia, or deviations from the expectations theory. This enables the hypothesis of overreaction to be formally stated. It is shown that, if anything, the long rate has underreacted to the short rate. However, the independent movement of the long rate is primarily responsible for the failure of the expectations theory.

Book Modeling the Term Structure of Interest Rates

Download or read book Modeling the Term Structure of Interest Rates written by Francois Lhabitant and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last two decades have seen the development of a profusion of theoretical models of the term structure of interest rates. This study provides a general overview and a comprehensive comparative study of the most popular ones among both academics and practitioners. It also discusses their respective advantages and disadvantages in terms of bond and/or interest rate contingent claims continuous time valuation or hedging, parameter estimation, and calibration. Finally, it proposes a unified approach for model risk assessment. Despite the relatively complex mathematics involved, financial intuition rather then mathematical rigour is emphasised throughout. The classification by means of general characteristics should enable the understanding of the different features of each model, facilitate the choice of a model in specific theoretical or empirical circumstances, and allows the testing of various models with nested as well as non-nested specifications.

Book The Changing Behavior of the Term Structure of Interest Rates

Download or read book The Changing Behavior of the Term Structure of Interest Rates written by N. Gregory Mankiw and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We reexamine the expectations theory of the term structure using data at the short end of the maturity spectrum. We find that prior to the founding ofthe Federal Reserve System in 1915, the spread between long rates and short rates has substantial predictive power for the path of interest rates; after 1915, however, the spread contains much less predictive power. We then show that the short rate is approximately a random walk after the founding of the Fed but not before. This latter fact, coupled with even slight variation inthe term premium, can explain the observed change in 1915 in the performance of the expectations theory. We suggest that the random walk character of the short rate may be attributable to the Federal Reserve's commitment to stabilizing interest rates.

Book The Cyclical Behavior of Interest Rates

Download or read book The Cyclical Behavior of Interest Rates written by Antonio Roma and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the behavior of the term structure of interest rates over the business cycle. In contrast to prior studies that measure the business cycle by the simple growth in aggregate economic activity, we consider an alternative measure: the deviation of aggregate economic activity from its potentially stochastic trend. We show that incorporating both an independent trend and cyclical component in consumption improves the efficiency in estimating consumption-based asset pricing models. We also find that the term spread is more informative about future changes in stochastically detrended real gross domestic product (GDP) than future growth rates in real GDP.
