Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird-Life: Being a History of the Bird, Its Structure, and Habits It is by a true appreciation of the wonders of Nature that the mind becomes expanded, the perceptions quickened, and the heart refined and softened. A more intimate knowledge of the beauties Of Creation inevitably conduces to delicacy of ideas and tenderness Of feeling. If lovely flowers be seen in a cottage window, rest assured that beneath that roof there exists a gentler and more kindly life than under the next, where not a green leaf is to be seen. Where bees are kept, or pet birds are to be found, there is sure to be seen a glimpse, and a bright one, too, Of the tender and more loveable side of our nature. One, if not the greatest, enemy to cruelty and brutality is knowledge; hence let us Offer every inducement in our power to its acquirement in connection with the beauties by which we are surrounded. Though this work is Of little or no value to the scientific reader, and is, doubtless, open to a certain amount of adverse criticism, still, taken as a whole, the main proportion of information contained therein is correct; while the various anecdotes and the minute detail of Observation are, at the same time, useful and entertaining. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of a Bird: An Account of the Progress of Birds From the Nest to Their Perfect Condition The situations which birds of different species and orders fix upon for the foundation of the dwelling-place of their young are extremely various, and lie among the deep recesses of the forest, in the pleasanter alleys of the greenwood, in the hedge-row, the bank-side, the crevices of the rock, the borders of the lake, the solitary moun tain and moor. Thither let us follow them, and trace these busy architects in their operations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird-Life: A Guide to the Study of Our Common Birds How unusual it is to meet any one who can correctly name a dozen of our birds! One may live in the country and still know only two or three of the one hundred and fifty or more kinds of birds that may be found during the year. Nevertheless, these gay, restless creatures, both by voice and action, constantly invite our attention, and they are far too interesting and beautiful to be ignored. No one to whom Nature appeals should be without some knowledge of these, the most attractive of her animate forms. The scientific results to be derived from the study of birds are fully realized by the naturalist. But there are other results equally important. I would have every one know of them: results that add to our pleasure in field and wood, and give fresh interest to walks that before were eventless; that quicken both ear and eye, making us hear and see where before we were deaf and blind. Then, to our surprise, we shall discover that the forests and pastures we have known all our lives are tenanted by countless feathered inhabitants whose companionship will prove a source of endless enjoyment. I would enter a special plea for the study of birds in the schools; for the more general introduction of ornithology in natural-history courses. Frogs and cray fish serve an excellent purpose, but we may not en counter either of them after leaving the laboratory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds About Us T is not necessary in a book Of this character to enter into minute details as to the anatomy and physiology of birds, important as these are to a thorough comprehension of bird-life as a whole. We will pass over, too, the subject of the relationship borne by this class Of animals to the other great groups of the animate world. It is sufficient to say that birds are known instantly by their feathers, a covering not to be confounded with any other, and peculiar to them. Birds, as we know, are creatures of flight, but SO are insects and some of our mammals, and indeed, in whatever way we propose to distinguish this group from the others, it will be found that there are some exceptions to be made, but not one in the matter Of the first distinctive feature that I have mentioned, that of feathers, which are beautiful in themselves because Of their delicate structure, and often so exquisitely colored that they rival the richest orchids of the tropical jungle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bits of Bird Life: Selections From the Youth's Companion Near my study there used to stand several Old apple-trees that bore fair crops of apples, but better crops Of birds. Every year these Old trees were the scenes Of bird incidents and bird histories that were a source Of much interest and amusement. Young trees may be the best for apples, but Old trees are sure to bear the most birds. If they are very decrepit, and full of dead and hollow branches, they will bear birds in Winter as well as summer. The downy woodpecker wants no better place than the brittle, dozy trunk Of an apple-tree in which to excavate his winter home. My Old apple-trees are all down but one, and this one is probably an octogenarian, and I am afraid cannot stand it another winter. Its body is a mere shell not much over one inch thick, the heart and main interior structure having turned to black mold long ago. An Old tree, unlike an Old person, as long as it lives at all, always has a young streak, or rather ring, in it. It wears a girdle Of perpetual youth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird-Life To compress the "Story of Bird-Life" within the limits of the present little work has been no easy task. The object aimed at has been to present the main features of bird-life in a general way. Hence it is hoped this volume may prove of interest to bird-lovers the world over, not because it contains information about the birds of any particular neighbourhood or country; but rather, because it serves as a guide to what should be looked for, and recorded, of the life-history of birds wherever they may be met with. Even dwellers in the sordid city have some material upon which they may exercise their powers of observation. Since there are no less than 13,000 known species of birds, it would have been courting failure, and wearisome in the extreme, to deal with individuals in detail! The present work then is a skeleton picture, which each can fill up as he may for himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds: The Elements of Ornithology All Birds have feathers, and no such thing as a feather is possessed by any creature which is not a Bird. This character alone, therefore, suffices to define the whole Class. The uniformity of their structure is very remarkable. While some beasts, some reptiles, and some fishes have but a pair of limbs, and other reptiles and fishes have none, all Birds have two pairs - a pair of wings and apair of legs. Most beasts and reptiles have a long tail, while some are without any; but every existing Bird has a tail which, feathers apart, is short T. Some beasts, some reptiles, and some fishes are edentulous, while most have teeth; but no living Bird possesses such structures. Some beasts, some reptiles, and some fishes are eyeless but every Bird has a pair of eyes. Birds are eminently aerial creatures, and there are but very few which have no power of flight; while none of the living members of the other Classes can truly fly except Bats; though some ancient reptiles (pterodactyles) possessed a similar power. Although many birds are more or less aquatic in their habits, none are so completely so as either the Whales and Porpoises amongst beasts, or certain reptiles.
