Book Elements of Structural Geology

Download or read book Elements of Structural Geology written by E. Sherbon Hills and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1963, this classic textbook was revised fully for the 1972 edition. The author presents a comprehensive account of all topics falling within the domain of structural geology in his characteristically objective, scientific and logical manner. The book pays particular attention to definitions and the origin of terms. Geology is a global science and this book used examples and ideas from work in many countries. The book is comprehensive in scope, dealing not only with secondary structures and tectonics, but also with primary structures of secondary and igneous rocks. This was the first textbook to deal with rock material as two-phase systems rather than as solids and this approach is continued in this reissued edition by analysis of concepts such as ocean-floor spreading and plate tectonics

Book Stratigraphy of the British Isles

Download or read book Stratigraphy of the British Isles written by Dorothy Helen Rayner and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1981-06-04 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a reprint of the second edition of Dr Rayner's standard text on the stratigraphy and historical geology of the British Isles. The book is written for undergraduates and other readers who may have only a general acquaintance with the broad principles of geology. An introductory chapter reviews the basic principles of stratigraphy, geochronology and tectonics. The various geological systems found in the British Isles are then considered in turn. A valuable feature of the book is the extensive treatment of different regional areas within the discussion of a particular geological system. In the final chapter the author reviews briefly those major economic resources that are related to stratigraphy. Throughout the text care has been taken to introduce the plate tectonic interpretation of stratigraphic features. Much more is known about the neighbouring continental shelf and the geology of sea floors and this also is included in order to provide a comprehensive integrated account of the geological history of the British Isles.

Book Regional Studies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bozzano G Luisa
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 0444598952
  • Pages : 335 pages

Download or read book Regional Studies written by Bozzano G Luisa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional Studies is a collection of papers that deals with strata-bound mineral deposits in the Eastern Alps, in the Canadian Cordillera, in north-central, and southwest England. Other papers describe southern African stratiform ore deposits and the genesis of Irish base-metal deposits. One paper compares the various types of volcanogenic mineral deposits and their depositional environments characterized by distinct assemblages of volcanic rocks, which formed in the Northern Appalachians during certain episodes of the tectonic evolution. The paper notes that the youngest volcanogenic deposits of economic interest are tungsten—molybdenum—tin—bismuth base metal deposits in highly altered rhyolitic sub-volcanic complexes at Mount Pleasant, New Brunswick. Another paper reviews the mineral occurrences in southern Africa that include stratiform, non-magmatic, ore deposits, The paper considers a subdivision of deposits formed from surficial chemical processes during previous (or current) cycles of weathering and erosion. Many ore bodies have a dual origin: for example, the iron in the high-grade hematite deposits is partly syngenetic and partly epigenetic. The paper also illustrates the time-dependence of some stratiform ore deposits in southern Africa in a schematic diagram. Geologists, researchers, or engineers whose works are related with ore deposits and mining will benefit tremendously from the collection.

Book Introduction to Small scale Geological Structures

Download or read book Introduction to Small scale Geological Structures written by Gilbert Wilson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The small-scale structures referred to in this publication are those structures of tectonic origin that can be observed with the naked eye in the field. Their scale varies broadly between that of the hand-specimen to that of the exposure, or even mountainside. Such structures are the visible effects of rock deformation caused by local stresses and movements which have been induced in the rocks by external tectonic forces of possibly unknown origin. Recognition of these minor structures, and appreciation of their origin and significance assist the field geologist to elucidate the larger-scale geological structures of his area. Commonly some can be used in deciphering the order of strati graphic succession in regions of strongly-folded unfossiliferous beds; and, in ground which has suffered superposed tectonic movements, the minor structures may provide evidence of successive phases or events in the tectonic history. The work contains descriptions of the more common varieties of small-scale tectonic structures, the different ways in which these structures may have been formed, and the limitations of the conclusions which can be drawn from their observation in the field. Gilbert Wilson June 1981 Acknowledgements An outline of much of the material given in this book was delivered at the 'Cinquieme Conference Gustave Dewalque' to the Societe Geologique de Belgique in 1958 and was published in the annals of the society in 1961.

Book Caledonian Structures in Britain

Download or read book Caledonian Structures in Britain written by J.E. Treagus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with those sites selected as part of the Geological Conservation Review (GCR) within the southern British part of the Caledonides, that is, the paratectonic Caledonides - a Caledonian terrane without strong and pervasive deformation and metamorphism, such as occurred further north. This orogenic belt formed by long and complex processes of earth movements between 500 and 380 million years before the present (?late Cambrian to mid-Devonian times), and has been classic ground for geologists for two hundred years. It is perhaps no accident that James Hutton in 1795 chose to illustrate his geostrophic cycle (and unconformity) with three visually explicit examples of the deformation wrought on Lower Palaeozoic rocks by Caledonian events. The former Caledonian mountain chain, which can be seen today in fragmented pieces in Scandinavia, Britain and Ireland, and North America, was ultimately the result of the collision of two continental plates and the closure of a former ocean, Iapetus. Some of these fragments, including those in Scandinavia, southern Britain, and the Republic of Ireland and the Maritime Provinces of Canada, are thought to have lain on the south side of the ocean before collision: the rest of North America, northern Ireland, and Scotland are thought to have lain north of the former Iapetus.

Book Petroleum Exploration and Exploitation in Norway

Download or read book Petroleum Exploration and Exploitation in Norway written by S. Hanslien and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-12-15 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference was arranged by the Norwegian Petroleum Society in order to commemorate the first 25 years of exploration on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Sixty papers and posters were presented of which 25 have been selected for this volume.Since the start of exploration activities during the mid 1960's the North Sea has not only proved to be one of the main petroleum provinces in the world, but has also established itself as an excellent laboratory for geoscientific research and application. This development has been stimulated greatly by the openess towards exchange of technical data encouragement by the Norwegian authorities. The objective of this book is to assess the results of 25 years of exploration in Norway. It focuses on lessons learned from past experiences as well as considering future challenges facing geoscientists in the industry (relating to both exploration and exploitation activities). Included, are papers which assess the status and future trends of exploration in the main geological provinces on the Norwegian Continental Shelf from the Central Graben in the south to Svalbard and the Russian Artic in the north.
