Book excerpt: In a world that does not value the sanctity of marriage and encourages quick exits when things get tough, giving up on a difficult marriage can seem easy. But what would happen if you contended for your marriage, engaged in spiritual warfare for your spouse, and weathered the storms, firmly believing that God can still change things around? The Strong Ones Stay presents a challenge for couples struggling with their marriages to fight for the vows they have made. Author Laura Horst shares a powerful testimony about how God radically transformed her marriage after she made the difficult choice to stay despite her husband’s battle with addiction. She also offers practical biblical advice for the healing process, including creating necessary boundaries and mobilizing a Christ-centered support team. Her guide does not seek to condemn those who have gone through divorce but instead shares a heartfelt plea to couples who are currently in a tough season of marriage. It offers renewed strength to keep fighting and believing that, with God’s help, the best is yet to come. Sharing one couple’s personal story, this guide serves as a call to fight for your marriage, offering hope and healing amid painful betrayal.

Book i Ching Fun Scan for Signals

Download or read book i Ching Fun Scan for Signals written by David Huang and published by David Huang. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The I Ching, also called Book of Changes, is the most comprehensive and oldest oracle originated in ancient China. The I Ching (consists of 64 Hexagrams) signifies all situations and behaviors relating to nature and humans. The I Ching system is the integration of cosmology, philosophy, mathematics, symbolism and divination. It stresses the point of balance of opposites; indicates the changeable and the unchangeable which is that things change inevitably as times and conditions change while the laws of nature never change. Binary Number, the modern computer language, was invented by Gottfried Leibniz in 1679. Leibniz was deeply inspired by the I Ching. He recognized and wrote that his original concept of Binary System (using only the digit 0 and 1 throughout the computation) was corresponded to the I Ching’s Trigram (binary number from 000 to 111) thus the Hexagrams (Gua). Yin (0) and Yang (1) are the basic binary configuration of the I Ching symbols. Furthermore, DNA (the hereditary material of all life) Genetic Code, which consists of 64-Triplet of nucleotides, is exactly analogous to the 64-Triplet System of the I Ching. Isn’t that miraculous? Besides the above stated values, the philosophical and symbolic structures of the I Ching are also infinitely valued. The I Ching originally contains a system of divination. However the Numerology of I Ching, which was derived thousands of years later, significantly enriches the I Ching divinatory methods. It adds values of numeric, time, symbolism and the Five Elements (mutual generation and restriction between Metal, Fire, Water, Wood and Earth) to the original I Ching divination system, makes it simple to learn; swift to be used and miraculous the results. This book will focus on introducing this numerological way of divination. In order to allow beginners to straightforwardly understand this numerology in a short time, this book employs plenty of graphical images and charts to make it easy and simple to learn. All steps of divination are presented as visualized as possible. As a I Ching beginner or a lover, you will enjoy the great fun of using the Numerology of I Ching in life, in problem-solving or decision-making. — David Huang

Book Theatre of the Borderlands

Download or read book Theatre of the Borderlands written by Iani del Rosario Moreno and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-05-27 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatre of the Borderlands: Conflict, Violence, and Healing is an enlightening and encompassing study that focuses on how dramatists from the Northern Mexico border territories write about theater. The plays analyzed in this study are representative of the most important Northern Border playwrights whose plays’ themes present the US-Mexico Borderlands in a socio-historical and political context. The most important themes observed include topics that engage in discussions of: the indigenous, Border crossings, heroes and folk saints, the city of Tijuana, and violence in the Borderlands, to name a few. These themes have led to the birth of the Teatro del Norte movement, a group of determined playwrights insistent on presenting dramaturgical themes that show the bond between their particular geographies, histories, socio-political and economic situations, thereby giving birth to an original voice and new aesthetic of representation. Dealing with the topics already mentioned, and pairing them with more timely ones like immigration reform, namely, this study can serve as an invaluable resource to many interdisciplinary academic settings, and can grant an eye-opening insight to Border relations through several critical readings.

Book excerpt: Offers a compelling look at how Orthodox Jewish LGBT persons in Israel became more accepted in their communities. Until fairly recently, Orthodox people in Israel could not imagine embracing their LGBT sexual or gender identity and staying within the Orthodox fold. But within the span of about a decade and a half, Orthodox LGBT people have forged social circles and communities and become much more visible. This has been a remarkable shift in a relatively short time span. Queer Judaism offers the compelling story of how Jewish LGBT persons in Israel created an effective social movement. Drawing on more than 120 interviews, Orit Avishai illustrates how LGBT Jews accomplished this radical change. She makes the case that it has taken multiple approaches to achieve recognition within the community, ranging from political activism to more personal interactions with religious leaders and community members, to simply creating spaces to go about their everyday lives. Orthodox LGBT Jews have drawn from their lived experiences as well as Jewish traditions, symbols, and mythologies to build this movement, motivated to embrace their sexual identity not in spite of, but rather because of, their commitment to Jewish scripture, tradition, and way of life. Unique and timely, Queer Judaism challenges popular conceptions of how LGBT people interact and identify with conservative communities of faith.

Book I Was Gone Long Before I Left

Download or read book I Was Gone Long Before I Left written by Peter C. Wilcox and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In St. Teresa of Avila's classic spiritual book Interior Castle she describes a difficult period of time in her spiritual journey when she said, "When I think of myself, I feel like a bird with a broken wing." When I left the monastery thirty-eight years ago, this was exactly how I felt. I Was Gone Long Before I Left is the story about my interior struggle to leave the monastery after living this lifestyle for over twenty-five years. It explores the reasons why I went to the monastery, why I stayed, why I eventually left, and what I have learned. Maybe more importantly, it describes the many years of mental anguish, confusion, and depression that I went through to finally make this decision. It has brought back many painful memories and experiences and called for an honesty and vulnerability that I found daunting. For over thirty-eight years, I have been unable to write about my experience of life in the monastery because I felt ashamed. For years, I thought about leaving, but couldn't make this decision because I felt paralyzed psychologically and emotionally. Now, after all these years, I have found the courage to share my story.

Book Structuring Sense Volume 2 The Normal Course of Events

Download or read book Structuring Sense Volume 2 The Normal Course of Events written by Hagit Borer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-21 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structuring Sense explores the difference between words however defined and structures however constructed. It sets out to demonstrate over three volumes, of which this is the second, that the explanation of linguistic competence should be shifted from lexical entry to syntactic structure, from memory of words to manipulation of rules. Its reformulation of how grammar and lexicon interact has profound implications for linguistic, philosophical, and psychological theories about human mind and language. Hagit Borer departs from both language specific constructional approaches and lexicalist approaches to argue that universal hierarchical structures determine interpretation, and that language variation emerges from the morphological and phonological properties of inflectional material. The Normal Course of Events applies this radical approach to event structure. Integrating research results in syntax, semantics, and morphology, the author shows that argument structure is based on the syntactic realization of semantic event units. The topics she addresses include the structure of internal arguments and of telic and atelic interpretations, accusative and partitive case, perfective and imperfective marking, the unaccusative-unergative distinction, existential interpretation and post-verbal subjects, and resultative constructions. The languages discussed include English, Catalan, Finnish, Hebrew, Czech, Polish, Russian, and Spanish.

Book excerpt: THIS IS A BOOK THAT CONTAINS SEVERAL DIFFERENT STORIES RECOUNTING SITUATIONS THAT COULD OCCUR IN ANYONE’S LIFE. THE ESSENCE OF HOW INDIVIDUALS DEAL WITH PROBLEMS IS THE MAIN STORY LINE. THE SITUATIONS ENCOUNTERED ARE INTERWOVEN WITH A SPIRITUAL NARRATIVE, AND HOPEFULLY THE READER WILL BE ABLE TO RELATE ON SOME LEVEL TO WHAT EACH STORY IS DESCRIBING. THE ENTIRE BOOK IS REALLY A SERIES OF VIGNETTES THAT COMPOSE THE ESSENCE FROM THE PROBLEMS THAT OCCUR. THE BIG QUESTION HERE IS WHAT METHODOLOGY DOES THE CHURCH USE TO HELP HUMANS GET THROUGH THE TOUGH STUFF OF LIFE? THE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS ARE DESCRIPTIVE OF EVERYDAY LIFE, BUT AT SOME POINT, THE FANTASY OF A DREAM TELLS THE READER THAT THERE IS A COMMONALITY OF LIFE, EVEN HUNDREDS OF YEARS AFTER THE REVEALING OF CHRIST. FINALLY, SEEING SPIRITUALITY IN COMMON EVERYDAY EVENTS IS A CHALLENGE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN UNDERSTANDING THAT THERE REALLY ARE NO PAT ANSWERS, AND IT’S OK TO SOMETIMES SIMPLY REST IN THE UNKNOWING.
