Book Integral Bridges

Download or read book Integral Bridges written by George L. England and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2000 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work was commissioned by the Highways Agency to produce guidance for bridge designers by addressing the thermally induced soil/structure integration problem created by environmental changes of temperature and the associated cyclical displacements imposed on the granular backfill to the bridge abutments. It develops a better theoretical understanding of the cyclic performance, in particular the strain racheting in the backfill soil when in contact with a stiff structure. It also identifies the governing soil parameters and examines their influence in the interaction problem, develops numerical modelling procedures to predict interactive soil behaviour, and identifies and quantifies the controlling features of bridge structures relevant to the interaction problem.

Book Behaviour of an Unsaturated Silty Sand Under Monotonic and Cyclic Loading

Download or read book Behaviour of an Unsaturated Silty Sand Under Monotonic and Cyclic Loading written by Dejin Hu and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis is to experimentally study the behaviour of unsaturated soil in terms of shear-dilatancy relationship under constant matric suction (CS) and constant water content (CW) during monotonic or cyclic loading. The influence of matric suction and its history (wetting/drying) on volume behaviour of unsaturated soil was traditionally discussed under isotropic or one-dimensional condition. This thesis studied the influence of matric suction and its history (with/without one cycle of wetting/drying) on shear-dilatancy response of unsaturated soil under drained (CS) or undrained (CW) shear loading. Two groups of tests with/without a wetting/drying cycle during matric suction initialization manifested significant different shear-dilatancy response. The influence of matric suction history on the soil structure appeared to be significant. After wetting/drying cycle, unsaturated soil achieved more stable structure (less shear-dilatancy). However, the influence of matric suction initialization became less significant under higher net confining pressure. In this study, the behaviour of unsaturated soil was also studied under two stress level of cyclic loading with limited number of load cycles. Stiffening, overall volume compression and matric suction decrease with loading cycles were observed in both stages of cyclic loading. Matric suction change during cyclic loading appeared to correlate with the volume strain response. The change rates of deformation response and matric suction decreased with the number of cycles, as their magnitudes became stable after limited loading cycles. Significant jumps in dilatancy were detected when loading direction reverses at both the peak and the trough of deviator stress, but continuous shear-dilatancy relationship was detected after the jumps during both stages of cyclic reloading or unloading. The shear-dilatancy response of unsaturated soil during both stages of cyclic reloading is different from that of virgin loading or the first loading. This study provides significant evidences that equivalent effective stress gave better interpretation than two independent stress variables in terms of strength and shear-dilatancy response of unsaturated soil.

Book Cyclic behaviour and liquefaction potential of silty sand Experimental and numerical investigations

Download or read book Cyclic behaviour and liquefaction potential of silty sand Experimental and numerical investigations written by Abdulaziz Osman Abdelkadr and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study experimental and numerical investigations have been carried out with the emphasis on studying the behaviour and liquefaction state of typical silty sand sampled from the Mekelle area in Ethiopia under monotonic and cyclic undrained loadings. Experiments have been carried out to measure the pore pressure accumulation, deformation characteristics and related effective stress paths. A numerical model was then used to simulate the behaviour and liquefaction state associated with the changes in the stress-strain-pore pressure levels by means of the finite element method (FEM) using the FE code Tochnog (Tochnog Professional Company 2021).

Book Sand Constitutive Modeling Accounting for Fabric Anisotropy and Zero Elastic Range

Download or read book Sand Constitutive Modeling Accounting for Fabric Anisotropy and Zero Elastic Range written by Alexandros Petalas and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SANISAND is the name of a family of constitutive models for sand within the frameworks of Bounding Surface plasticity and Critical State Theory, able to realistically simulate the sand behavior under monotonic and cyclic loading paths, with a single set of model constants irrespective of initial density and stress conditions. In order to incorporate the very important role of fabric anisotropy, a constitutive reformulation of these models is presented in this thesis within the framework of the new Anisotropic Critical State Theory, and named SANISAND-F model. The main new constitutive ingredient is an evolving fabric tensor F and an associated fabric anisotropy variable A relating F to the deviatoric plastic strain rate direction. The dilatancy state parameter [zeta] is defined in terms of A and the state parameter [psi], on which the dilatancy and plastic modulus depend, thus accounting for evolving fabric anisotropy. It is shown in this thesis that the model is successful in simulating the drained and undrained response of sand samples loaded at various directions of the principal stress axes with respect to their fabric, and exhibiting for the same initial conditions of density and pressure, differences of deviatoric stress reaching up to 1000% at the same level of deviatoric strain. Calibration and validation is performed against a large dataset for Toyoura sand under drained and undrained conditions. However, the response of the SANISAND-F model under continuous stress principal axes rotation provides ground for further modification of the model to account for the effect of ensuing non-coaxiality on the dilatancy and plastic modulus. The modified model, named SANISAND-NF is subsequently presented and validated against published data for loading that includes stress principal axes rotation on Toyoura sand. The last part of this dissertation deals with the numerical implementation of a constitutive model within a zero elastic range, bounding surface plasticity framework; this framework is a suitable choice for modeling materials which exhibit zero purely elastic-range response during shearing, such as sands. As a consequence of zero elastic range the plastic strain increment direction, and consequently the elastic-plastic moduli fourth order tensor depends on the direction of the stress increment, rendering the model incrementally non-linear. The system of ordinary differential equations of the elasto-plastic formulation is intrinsically implicit. Thus, an iterative algorithm based on the Backward Euler numerical integration method and the damped Newton-Raphson method with an adaptive trial step is proposed. The methodology is applied to the zero elastic range SANISAND-Z model for sands and a thorough verification is done for various applied strain histories. The proposed integration scheme allows the use of SANISAND-Z or any other bounding surface zero elastic range model in a displacement-driven finite element analysis. Finally, conclusions and recommendations for future research are presented.
