Book excerpt: The conventional procedure for determining the drained shear strength of a soil is by performing a strain-controlled undrained triaxial test and using the pore-pressure measurements to determine the effective stress parameters. The ability of this standard test to predict the drained strength is evaluated by comparing drained, undrained, stress-controlled, and strain-controlled triaxial tests. All the tests were performed on reasonably uniform samples of lakebed clay. The results of this research indicate that the standard practice of obtaining the drained strength of a soil from a consolidated undrained triaxial test is valid. The drained strength determined in this research is slightly lower than the undrained strength. This difference is attributed to the slower rate of shear used in the drained test. The shear strength determined by strain-controlled and stress-controlled triaxial tests is also evaluated. The results of this research indicate that the method of applying load to the specimen does not significantly affect the shear strength. It is concluded that the strain-controlled test is the better method since it is easier to conduct.
