Book The Strength of Glass Fibers and the Failure of Filament Wound Pressure Vessels

Download or read book The Strength of Glass Fibers and the Failure of Filament Wound Pressure Vessels written by Joseph Arthur Kies and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In glass-reinforced-plastic rockets such as Polaris A3 and third stage Minuteman, the current strength/weight advantage over metals has been achieved in a major degree by utilizing a new glass designated S or S-994. Examination of what is meant by the strength of glass filaments has led to a new method of characterizing the strength, especially for the purpose of exploring new glasses. Since the tensile strength is influenced by flaws and by environmental effects, the strength is therfore strongly dependent on the gage length tested and the time under load. In considering the statistical distribution of fiber strengths more than one population of flaws has been detected. The amount of damage to the fibers in such handling as the making of roving is rather severe, judged by the size or length effect on the strength of filaments. On the other hand with good design this mechanical damage is not reflected in a correspondingly large size effect in the strength of pressure vessels. (Author).

Book ON THE STRENGTH DEGRADATION OF FILAMENT WOUND PRESSURE VESSELS SUBJECTED TO A HISTORY OF LOADING

Download or read book ON THE STRENGTH DEGRADATION OF FILAMENT WOUND PRESSURE VESSELS SUBJECTED TO A HISTORY OF LOADING written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If it is assumed that the rate of growth of a Griffith crack that controls the strength of a fiber is proportional to a power of the stress on that fiber we can predict that the ultimate strength of a filament wound pressure vessel decreases linearly with the time at a given load and also that the time to failure when the vessel is held at a given load will increase logarithmically. Both these observations are confirmed experimentally and form the basis for a simple method of predicting the life of a vessel at one load after it has been held for a given time at another.

Book Prediction of Failure Due to Mechanical Damage in the Outer Hoop Windings in Fiberglass Plastic Pressure Vessels

Download or read book Prediction of Failure Due to Mechanical Damage in the Outer Hoop Windings in Fiberglass Plastic Pressure Vessels written by J. A. KIES and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new method of estimating the effect of mechanical damage on the burst strength of glass-filament-wound plastic rocket cases has been developed. Only one type of failure was considered, namely unwinding and splitting of a strip in the outermost hoop-wound layers. This kind of event generally results in the loss of most of the layer, which contributes more than half of the wall strength. For the case of glass filaments in epoxy resin now in common use, a cut only 0.007 in. deep is predicted to be critical for a composite hoop stress of 80,000 psi. (Author).
