Book Trade Unionism in Australia

Download or read book Trade Unionism in Australia written by Tom Bramble and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-13 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1960s Australian unionism was on the flood tide: growing in strength, industrially confident and capable of shaping the overall political climate of the nation. Forty years on, union membership and power is ebbing away despite community support for trade unionism and the continuing need for strong unions. Even the unprecedented mobilisation against WorkChoices, which defeated a government and lost the prime minister his own seat, has done little to turn the tide. With compelling rigour, Tom Bramble explores the changing fortunes of what was once an entrenched institution. Trade Unionism in Australia charts the impact on unions of waves of economic restructuring, a succession of hostile governments and a wholesale shift in employer attitudes, as well as the failure of the unions' own efforts to boost membership and consolidate power. Indeed, Bramble demonstrates how the tactics employed by unions since the early 1980s may have paradoxically contributed to their decline.

Book Power in the Global Era

Download or read book Power in the Global Era written by T. Cohn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-09-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the effects of globalization on changing power relationships between transnational corporations (TNCs), and transnational capital, the state, and subnational groups. TNCs have expanded their power with the deepening of market relations, but they are not causing the state to wither away. Indeed, neoliberal changes often occur with the permission or even encouragement of powerful states. Transnational capital has weakened labour groups in order to make production more competitive, but the disadvantaged groups may mobilise to counter the power of transnational capital. Finally, globalization is subjecting domestic policies to increased international scrutiny.

Book Labour and Globalisation

Download or read book Labour and Globalisation written by Ronaldo Munck and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often assumed that social movements, such as that of labour, will simply be overwhelmed by the changes brought about by globalisation. This volume points to this conclusion as at best premature and possibly also misguided.

Book The New Politics of Transnational Labor

Download or read book The New Politics of Transnational Labor written by Marissa Brookes and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years many transnational labor alliances have succeeded in improving conditions for workers, but many more have not. In The New Politics of Transnational Labor, Marissa Brookes explains why this dichotomy has occurred. Using the coordination and context-appropriate (CCAP) theory, she assesses this divergence, arguing that the success of transnational alliances hinges not only on effective coordination across borders and within workers' local organizations but also on their ability to exploit vulnerabilities in global value chains, invoke national and international institutions, and mobilize networks of stakeholders in ways that threaten employers' core, material interests. Brookes uses six comparative case studies spanning four industries, five countries, and fifteen years. From dockside labor disputes in Britain and Australia to service sector campaigns in the supermarket and private security industries to campaigns aimed at luxury hotels in Southeast Asia, Brookes creates her new theoretical framework and speaks to debates in international and comparative political economy on the politics of economic globalization, the viability of private governance, and the impact of organized labor on economic inequality. From this assessment, Brookes provides a vital update to the international relations literature on non-state actors and transnational activism and shows how we can understand the unique capacities labor has as a transnational actor.

Book The March of Patriots

Download or read book The March of Patriots written by Paul Kelly and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 731 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unveiling the inside story of how Paul Keating and John Howard changed Australia, this record presents these two personalities as conviction politicians, tribal warriors, and national interest patriots. Divided by belief, temperament, and party, they were united by generation, city, and the challenge to make Australia into a successful nation for the globalized age. The making of policy and the uses of power are explored, capturing the authentic nature of Australian politics as distinct from the polemics advanced by both sides. Focusing on how these prime ministers altered the nation's direction, this study also depicts how they redefined their parties and struggled over Australia's new economic, social, cultural, and foreign policy agendas. A sequel to the author’s bestselling The End of Certainty, this survey is based on more than 100 interviews with the two key players as well as other politicians, advisers, and public servants.
