Book excerpt: For The Stranglers, 1977 was a vital year. Not quite punk, certainly not pop and often at odds with live audiences and the music press alike, their approach was such that nothing could stop them. With hits like 'Peaches', 'No More Heroes' and 'Something Better Change', there was everything to play for despite a variety of confrontations and controversies. With two commercially and musically strong albums - Rattus Norvegicus (their debut) and No More Heroes - released within just months of each other, the story of The Stranglers in 1977 is one that needs to be told. With vintage interviews and reviews in abundance, this book comprehensively documents it all with immense detail.

Book The Stranglers Song by Song

Download or read book The Stranglers Song by Song written by Hugh Cornwell and published by Bobcat Books. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stranglers have outlasted and outsold virtually every other band of their era, recording ten hit albums and releasing 21 Top 40 singles. Their list of hits, including Golden Brown, were written against a background of spectacular success, dismal failure, drug dependency, financial ruin, infighting and misfortune. As a response to David Buckley's one-sided biography of the band ("No Mercy" Hodder & Stoughton, 1997) and the band’s reticence to reveal the true meaning behind their songs, Hugh Cornwell, founding member and songwriter, sets the record straight, displaces the myths and for the first time explains the real stories behind The Stranglers, his departure and the origins of their songs.

Download or read book The Stranglers written by Martin Hutchinson and published by Sonicbond Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2024-09-20 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stranglers, or Meninblack, were once considered the bad boys of punk despite never really being a punk band. Formed in Guildford in 1974, they celebrate their golden anniversary as a band that have continued to tour and record throughout their history, giving us some classic tunes like ‘No More Heroes’, ‘Peaches’ and ‘Golden Brown,’ just part of a legacy that includes 40 top 40 UK singles hits and 18 studio albums. They have courted controversy, been jailed, been reviled and lauded – in fact, everything that can happen to a band has happened to The Stranglers. Still led by original bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel, The Stranglers have created some thought-provoking music with a sense of melody, which proves that their musicality and intelligence were often greater than their contemporaries. This book examines every album and single recorded by the band, as well as rarities and their many videos throughout their history. With a foreword by current guitarist and vocalist Baz Warne, the band’s colourful history is explored as we discuss every song created by one of the most interesting and eclectic bands in rock music. Martin Hutchinson lives with his wife Michaela (and cat Sydney) in Horwich near Bolton, UK. He has written comedy sketches for TV and Radio, compiled quizzes for TV and has penned over 270 CD liner notes for EMI and others. For over thirty years, he has concentrated on music, supplying articles and interviews for around 20 provincial newspapers and three magazines. He is also, for his sins, a lifelong Bolton Wanderers fan. This is his second book for Sonicbond, the first being The Kinks On Track.

Book Dance With The Devil

Download or read book Dance With The Devil written by Laura Shenton and published by Wymer UK. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ritchie Blackmore once said, "You can't get any better than Cozy, you know. He's always up there on stage going crazy, he always pushes me on when I look round. He always gives me that incentive to play because Cozy won't let anybody take it easy." He wasn't wrong. Cozy Powell was a talented, reliable and versatile drummer. A drummer of such calibre that he played with Jeff Beck, Rainbow, Michael Schenker, Whitesnake, Emerson and Lake, Black Sabbath and Brian May - as well as being a hugely in-demand session player. Before all of that, Powell initially came to prominence with three Mickie Most-produced top twenty singles under his own name. An extraordinary feat for an instrumentalist, and a drummer at that. With new photos (many of which have never been published before), tour dates, an expansive discography, a deep dive into Cozy's cars and racing career, as well as many other new and exciting additions, this second edition of The Cozy Powell Story builds upon the original that was published four-and-a-half years ago.

Book Trouble in the Camera Club Large Print 16pt

Download or read book Trouble in the Camera Club Large Print 16pt written by Don Pyle and published by ReadHowYouWant. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trouble in the Camera Club features over 300 photographs by Don Pyle and another 200 images of related ephemera from the earliest days of Toronto's punk music scene, featuring early gigs by Toronto bands like The Viletones, Teenage Head, The Curse, The Diodes, and The Ugly, and visiting punks the Ramones, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, The Clash, Vibrators, The Stranglers, and other artists influential to the punk movement including Bryan Ferry, David Bowie, and Cheap Trick. Starting in 1976, at age 14, Don Pyle witnessed and photographed some of the earliest gigs of Toronto punk acts and many of the artists whose sensibilities aligned with this new, festering subculture. According to Steven Leckie of The Viletones, Pyle's photographs "made everyone look heroic, as good as Annie Leibovitz and Linda McCartney." In 1977, Pyle bought a 35mm camera and joined his high school's camera club to learn how to develop and print, and to get free chemicals for processing. His trial - and - error education in photography resulted in a collection of images that, 30 - something years later, are as much historic document as they are pictures of an under - represented and significant period in Toronto's musical cultural development. Scratched, water - marked, and dusty negatives were restored to reveal his hidden history of the revolution. Numerous artists that have since passed away are captured in this book in their creative prime, frozen in youthful self - absorbed beauty. These are photos taken by a kid in awe of what he was seeing and who was pressed against the stage at every gig, not by a "professional" who observed from the sidelines. Trouble in the Camera Club is a one - of - a - kind photo - documentary of this golden moment - the birth of punk.
